Movie Review : The Dirt

The Dirt
This film is wild! I had been meaning to get around to watching this film as I find bio pics about bands very interesting and how the Inner working of a band went on and this film shows that and so much more. Very much like their critically well received memoir the film is just like their book it’s wild full of intense sex drugs and rock n roll. The film shows the brutal honest truths of what happened in this band and the great highs they had and the incredibly dark falls they took too and it isn’t glamorized that’s also what I liked about it was it stayed very realistic to how these events played out. The film does clock in at 1h and 48h minutes that was a concern for me when I first heard it as that’s a lot to squeeze in so much history into not even a 2h film and they were able to do it and show the important points of the bands history while having a great narrative that you followed along with.

First off, The films actors all have given solid performances. After I watched the film I watched a 39 minute documentary of the band just to see if the actors looked and sounded like them and I will say they were all perfectly casted as each cast member did a great job at inhabiting each persona with great passion. But the actor that really stood out for me though had to be Daniel Webber who played Vince Neil did a phenomenal job at showing the emotional and mental state of the frontman and all the highs and lows he had and yes everyone involved shows that in their performance but Daniel brought this extra layer of vulnerability that just made his performance pop and I enjoyed every aspect of his performance. The entire cast really gave strong performances across the board and all delivered top notch work that deserves to be recognized. They also were able to capture the sheer brotherhood connection the band shared through the film as each actor all had amazing chemistry that really showed the bond this band had with great strength.

Secondly, The film does not try to hide any  of the ugliness that went on inside the band as some films only want to show the total highs and not the lows which I think is unfaithful by doing so. And this film’s opening scene right out the gate tells you that this is going to be a hard R edge of your seat roller coaster ride and it truly is as they show the bands origins and how they got together but also they show the struggles within the band if it’s Substance abuse they don’t turn their cheek to the unglamorous parts of their history they fully embrace the fact that it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows and their was darkness and really low points in their life and they made sure they showed that as honestly as possible even if it’s uncomfortable to watch they want to be as truthful as can be and I admire their brutal honesty as it makes for a more compelling story and overall film when your able to show every side of what they went through as you become really invested in the story. So I respect the fact they never sugar coated anything but showed the wild ride that really happened as it truly is shocking and at times heartbreaking.

Lastly, I am no Motley Crue fan but after viewing this film if your not Familiar with their music this film is a great introduction to the band as it’s a very well told story of the highs and lows of the band and it’s acted tremendously well and is one of the most honest and truthful depictions I’ve seen of a bands history. The Dirt is funny, shocking, heartbreaking and a wild ride that I had such fun watching I highly recommend people check this film out.

Rated R : nudity throughout, Drug use, language throughout and some disturbing images

This film tells the story of the Hard Rock band that is Motley Crue and their highs and lows of sex drugs and rock n
roll

Daniel Webber : Daniel Webber gives the standout performance of this film for sure! He plays the frontman of Motley Crue since he’s playing Vince Neil that’s a big task as first off he needs to make sure he plays the person in the most honest and authentic way possible and he’s more then capable of stepping up to the task as he delivers on all fronts for it. He is the one character in the film besides Nikki Sixx gets the most backstory told throughout the film as we see his partners, when he got into the car wreak that took his friends life and also the loss of his daughter as well so theirs a lot to unpack from his personal life that this film does very well and Daniel shows the emotional range to capture all of it so honestly through his onscreen performance. For the most part we see him really riding the wave of success and a non stop party animal and then half way through we find more about his Personal life and he makes this very dramatic switch that caught me off guard as he was able to show like I mentioned the over the top party side to him that was very wild and free but then was able to show the very small and more emotional aspects of his life with very a realistic depiction shown in the film. As after the car accident with his friend everything after that moment changes his character arc and performance as he goes on this very heartbreaking path of loss and emotional pain that Daniel shows with such vulnerability. As when his daughter gets diagnosed with cancer and he’s at her side the sheer heartbreak and the emotional breakdown that happens to him after his daughter passes was painful to watch because he channeled such a real emotional side to him that really popped onscreen and then you see him just fall even more apart after that and Daniel really shines by brining such life to his dialogue and showing such layered sides to his performance as it is a very strong performance that truly shines and he gives a damn good performance that can’t be ignored he puts so much passion and strong acting into each frame and scene he’s in and Daniel Webber truly stands out with his fantastic and very honest performance and portrayal of Vince Neil

Jeff Tremaine : Jeff brings a raw honesty to this film. Jeff did Bad Grandpa which I really enjoyed but this is his first attempt at a bio pic and he does it so well. He shows the wild sex fueled life of the band he doesn't glamorize any of the events he shows them for how they really went down. He also was able to capture the entire story of the band and not skip over important details of their history as for the most part it started in the 80's where that's where we spend the majority of the film and so nothing ever felt glossed over or failed to mention Jeff really did the research and was able to execute a very honest and authentic telling of this bands story. He got a great cast to play the band as each one of them looked the part and really stayed as truthful and respectful to who they were portraying onscreen as well he didn't make this a PG film it's a hard R pushed over the limit and it's shocking but all true and it makes for such a compelling watch but he doesn't just show the highs and excess of the band he does show the backstory to each member and really fleshes them out greatly so you become invested in their own story's while at the same time showing the hardships that happened within the band and I love that he shows all the layered aspects of what Motley Crüe was and is and he did a great Job at staying faithful to the story while at the same time giving fans and people who didn't know the band a great time with this 80's band that had a hell of a story that was shocking and it was told in amazing effect Jeff does some of his best direction yet as he shows very emotional moments that hit you emotionally and then can be shocking and hilarious and he shows it so honestly an overall greatly directed film by Jeff.
