Movie Review : Toy Story 4

Toy Story 4
This film is a gorgeous masterpiece that concludes the franchise with the greatest end to one of the greatest franchises ever to grace the screen. This film I was so worried about because the film I thought concluded with Toy Story 3 and it had such a satisfying close to the film with the third film and so when they announced they were going to do a 4th one I was so freaking nervous because majority of the time films that go back to do a forth one are usually not successful as the  fifth Indiana Jones and forth Jason Bourne proved that. So I was very scared this film would not be good or as good as it’s predecessors and after seeing it I can say that they have struck lightning in the bottle once again I don’t know how Pixar does it but they give what is a fitting end to this franchise in a emotionally satisfying way. The film has amazing fun to be had with the great introduction of new characters and also a great fun adventure everyone’s favourite characters go on and Pixar has made a great film that shows that you can make a great and affective continuation after your 3 arc story while continuing the story and characters we know and love in such a well done way. The film is also a gorgeous sight to behold as the animation just pops off the screen in crystal clear animation. We’ve gotten to the point now where animation looks real and Toy Story 4 brings it above and beyond with that aspect of the animation so bravo to its animators. This franchise I’ve grown up with since I was a kid and I can tell you that if you are a longtime fan or a new one you’ll love this film as the performances are amazing and the story is rich with fun and emotion and goes to infinity and beyond Toy Story 4 is a masterwork Of film that I didn’t think it would be able to accomplish and it went well beyond my expectations.

First off, hats off to Pixar and the entire filmmaking team of Toy Story 4. They deserve the most amount of credit as this studio has been crafting some of the greatest films of all time giving us incredible works of art since the 1990’s and onward. This franchise is the golden child of Pixar as a lot of their films are masterworks that I truly love but Toy Story for me goes on a whole other level. This team had the massive responsibility of trying to match or pass the incredible finish we got from Toy Story 3 which is no easy feat. As we all thought that was the end and concussion to the franchise and when it was announced they were going to make a forth instalment I was nervous as I mentioned before but I will say this Pixar uses a process that is very rarely used nowadays. They could of easily of made this film a cash grab and just put out a mediocre Toy Story just for profit but they didn’t do that they wanted only to approach this property again only if they could match the magic that the 3rd film captured. And if they could write a meaningful story that was worth telling and they did and I give massive massive applause to the filmmakers and the studio for making sure this film was well handled. The story is just so rich in layers of depth, heart and humour that is so well shown through this and the other films. It was able to be a great continuation of the story as this film really wraps up Woody’s character arc and really brings it to a fine close. The film really does focus on Woody for the meat of the story as to some people that might bug them as the other characters yes they get their moments to shine onscreen but this is mostly the closure to Woody’s arc that has been ongoing since the very first film and I think it was incredibly well done and was incredibly satisfying. Pixar gives their best property the best sendoff and I was emotionally wrecked but so pleased with the direction they brought the final film into. These characters we have grown to love Woody and Buzz are Pixar’s Mickey and Minnie they are the icons of Pixar and myself being a kid when these films came out and growing up with them and really getting a emotional connection with them over the years to get to this film I can tell you Pixar has given a great closing Curtin that feels earned and not just put in for the sake of just doing another film.

Secondly, The cast all give top notch performances! The entire cast give their final outing as these characters the best sendoff the possibly could and do it so brilliantly. Tom Hanks gave his greatest portrayal of Woody I’ve ever seen. He brings a depth and a emotional impact that he has shown in the last 3 films but here he really puts his heart on display and gives the greatest tip of the hat to Woody. Tom always elevates his performance and never phones in a performance he always finds a way to bring the character into new territory and exploring new places with the character which I love as he shows every side as possible. The entire rest of the cast are also terrific as Tim Allen also gives a fantastically hilarious performance as Buzz Lightyear with great wit and heart and the whole rest of the supporting cast all give great contribution to the film with fun performances all around but its Woody who really steals the show in this film.

Lastly, Toy Story 4 soars with great heart humour and emotional strength that gives a phonomenal farewell to this franchise. Toy Story is one of the greatest film series ever to grace the screen and Pixar has constantly raised the bar and given us incredible storytelling with these characters that have resonated with us for 25 years. We were introduced to the gang in 1995 then we got the world expanded in 1999 Toy Story 2 and then we saw the meaning of family in 2010 Toy Story 3 and in 2019 we say goodbye to these characters with one last round up that is a whole lot of fun and a film that will have you crying and smiling all the way through.  This film may even hit you emotionally harder then the last three films as this film has one of the greatest endings to any film I’ve ever seen ever. This film made my inner child smile and Toy Story 4 is a true masterpiece that is not just one of the best films of the year but one of the best films of all time this film goes to infinity and beyond.

Rated G : all audiences

This film revolves around Bonnie and after quite the tough day at kindergarten she makes a new Toy called Forky and when she’s going on a road trip and Forky goes missing Woody makes it his mission to get Bonnie’s new toy back to her and along the way he discovers what I means to be a toy and sees some old faces along the way

Tom Hanks : Hanks gives his final outing as Woody his best performance as the character to date! Hanks is one of my favourite actors as he is so charming and such a talented actor who always delivers his best regardless of the source material he will bring as much passion to the performance as possible and here he puts his heart on display in his performance in Toy Story 4. Tom pushes himself farther emotionally with his work in this film and it’s incredible and a lot of people will say it should of ended after the 3rd film and that film concluded Andy’s arc with the toys here it really brings a close to Woody’s arc as his character has been struggling since the first film and he’s always been fighting with the notation of where he belongs and here we find the answer and it’s an emotional one Tom provides greatly throughout the film. As Woody is very much a multi layered character with a whole lot of range of emotions he goes through and the one very constant he always has had since the beginning is loyalty he will make sure everyone is safe and where their supposed to be and all of his morals that we’ve seen him show in the past films are all tested in incredibly hard choices. Tom brings the fun humour of Woody and his over the top antics that he’s always been like and how he’s always worried about everything but then he also shows a lot more deeper emotional strength too as he’s able to bring the endless charisma that is required for this character but also be able to show the maturity and the wisdom he’s had built over the previous films. Tom puts every bit of his heart into this performance as he knows this character inside and out by this point and since this is the curtain call for this series Tom Hanks brings a extra layer of emotion that really goes the extra mile that makes his performance really pop onscreen cause yes it’s a voice performance but if anything it is harder because his performance Doesn’t work if Tom doesn’t commit with his voice to the character and bring the range needed to make the character work and he’s been delivering a incredible performance of Woody for the past 20 years but he elevates his performance to a whole new caliber and shows moments of great comedic timing which result is fantastic humorous moments cause Tom is a very funny guy and so is Woody and he knows when to deliver a joke and when to pull back. He’s great at his timing as he shows such a massive amount of emotions but one is never outweighed by the other. As he also can give very emotional moments in this film and it is heartbreaking as Tom brings this genuine realness to his voice that is so vulnerable and emotionally open in ways I haven’t seen Woody explored before which was fantastic to see a new approach he brings to Woody. Overall Tom Hanks gives the greatest farewell to his character with a truly magnificent performance that is unlike anything he’s brought to Woody before Tom Hanks is Woody.

Tim Allen : Tim Allen gives a great supporting turn in the film! Tim Allen surprisingly gets a backseat to this film which I was surprised by. The base for these films are the dynamic chemistry and relationship of Woody and Buzz Lightyear and this time around since it’s very much Woody’s story Buzz does take a backseat to this film as well. It would of been nice to have seen more moments with Woody and Buzz as their onscreen moments have made for some of the best moments of the series. But it’s understandable why he would have a smaller role this time around due to the massive part of this film revolving around Woody’s arc coming to a close and it’s not like Tim Allen doesn’t get much trust me he gets his great share of moments in this film. He does become a supporting performance in the film though but is still a lot of fun to be had with his performance as their are some very new things that go with Buzz Lightyear’s arc as well their are some very deep meanings to his characters personal journey in this film that does work in great lengths. Their are fantastic humorous moments that Tim Allen showcases brilliantly onscreen with his fantastic comedic chops that are so effective in its execution. As he has some of the funniest moments of the film and he also does show a great deal of emotion that I hadn’t seen explored from Buzz before sure we got a massive amount of emotion from him in the last half of Toy Story 3 but here he really emotionally cranks it up to a 1000. As he’s able to show comedy and dramatic elements of his performance so well and Tim brings that extra layer of soul to the film as Woodys the heart and Buzz is the Soul and Tim pours his heart onscreen in the last and final Toy Story film. He is truly astonishing and brings such genuine authenticity to the screen with his fantastic voice work and performance in the film. Tim Allen is brilliant In this film bringing incredible emotional punches but also great comedic laughter as well and Tim Allen was amazing and overall Allen gives a truly emotionally gripping performance Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear.

Josh Cooley : Josh gives a perfect directional debut. After I heard this was Josh’s first ever directed film after seeing what he did here with this film I’m blown away by his directing skills. As to take on a massively popular property for his first ever directed feature is a massive responsibility and he stepped up to the challenge and delivered on every scale possible. He did a brilliant job at being true to Toy Story and making sure it stayed respectful to its characters and the underlining values that comes with it he did it with such grace and great passion. Here he brought the characters into a whole new territory and throws so many new obstacles at them and he gets brilliant comedic moments throughout this film as this is probably the funniest Toy Story film and some of the Jokes were even edgy and I loved that. The meat of the film is the emotional depth of the story that is brilliantly shown through the film as what Josh did here is genius. He sets up all these side plots and small storylines that come into play later and by the end of the film you realize what he did the entire time was to get to the last moment of the film which you don’t expect and it worked so perfectly and it was so emotionally effective and emotionally satisfying. He makes this film very much Woody’s film and his closing arc to his story and it’s incredibly poetic and he brings a great close to this franchise with amazing heart and emotion to it that never felt cheesy or out of place but very much earned. He also brings new characters into the film and gets you invested right away in them and he really captures the fun adventure of Toy Story but also the deep maturity and emotion of it as well and he walks that fine line so perfectly and packs in so much rich goodness into this film it’s impossible not to love this film. Josh shows that he’s a freaking amazing filmmaker as if he can tackle one of the most beloved franchises in history I cannot wait to see what he will do next overall Josh Cooley gave truly perfect direction.

The Score : Randy Newman has done it again! This man is a genius that has been orchestrating Disney and Pixar films for years and he’s a unsung hero of these films that deserves his credit. Randy Newman crafted a fantastic composed score that feels joyous and fun but also emotionally effective and he is able to bring very loud and gleeful fun with some of the simplest of sounds but then can make you cry with a single musical note then next he really brought a great deal of fantastic music that helped capture the emotion and moment of each frame perfectly with his orchestrated music and also his original written songs as well Randy Newman my man you’ve done it again.
