Movie Review : Isn't It Romantic

Isn’t It Romantic
This is such a fun time to be had. This is pure laughs and fun all the way through I have seen a lot of Romantic comedies and I know most of the stereotypes and this film makes fun of those very tropes and it’s genius! It sets the film in a story where a girl is aware of the tropes of rom - coms and she’s stuck in the setting of a romantic comedy setting but everyone else around her aren’t aware and it’s truly brilliant writing. It’s very meta and what is great about the film is that it doesn’t use all the great funny material in the beginning of the film but really spread the humour out and craft a tightly well thought out script that is truly hilarious giving laughs that land and don’t feel forced but are genuinely funny.

Firstly, the film has a stellar cast that all are hilarious and contribute great laughs through the film. This is the first film I have enjoyed Rebel Wilson in a very long time. I think she’s a very talented actress but has been not getting the best roles to show her great abilities and here she gets a juicy role that showcases her comedic style perfectly. She was able to balance this cosmetic and dramatic emotional balance so well through it and worked so well. Adam DeVine also shows such a different side to him sure he brings comedic value but also great dramatic impact that was fantastic to see from him. The entire cast all bring their A game and all are having such fun making you laugh cry and have a great time and it’s the cast that is one of the big contributing factors that I loved this film was it’s fantastic cast.

Secondly, The film’s strength as I said before is its strongly shaped plot. It is able to use the tropes from so many different Romantic comedies and even to the point of using lines from them which doesn’t feel like it’s a rip off but more of a homage and a inside joke with the audience. The film itself becomes a Romaric comedy itself but dose it in a way where it doesn’t feel like it’s a rehashed idea but it takes a very emotional strong turn towards the end and dose such a great job at not becoming the romantic comedies their poking fun at but successfully make itself a different kind of romantic comedy with its smart and sharp writing.

Overall, this is a very meta and tightly written script that works due to its fantastic writing layered with its fantastic cast all giving great performances having a ton of heart laughs and emotion Isn’t It Romantic is a refreshing take on Romantic Comedies that is a pure delight to be had. I highly recommend this film.

When a girl who’s sick of Romantic Comedies and it’s unrealistic tropes after hitting her head wakes up herself in her very own Romantic comedy

Rated PG - 13 : for language, some sexual material, and a brief drug reference

Rebel Wilson : Wilson shows great strength in a fantastic comedic performance provided by her here. Rebel like I said for me hasn’t been giving great roles over the past few years and to see her in a film where she can use her comedic abilities in a space that is not limiting to her is great as she delivers a fantastic performance. Here she provides great humour that landed and didn’t feel forced but natural and really worked as her comedic timing was perfect knowing when the right moment was to say a joke and when not to she had great emotional restraint as well. She didn’t just play it for laughs though she did have great moments of true emotional driven parts that showed her more vulnerable side which we haven’t seen explored from her much but she was able to channel so many different layers of character depth and emotion that she has not done when approaching characters in the past. Her delivery was fantastic as she brings the wit sure she dose and it’s splendid but it’s her ability to show so many other layers then just being funny that was refreshing as she gives such a different performance then what were used to and she makes us really feel for her and invest in her because she’s so entertaining onscreen and really gives a fun filled performance with humour and great amounts of emotion that showed fantastic range from Rebel an overall fantastic performance by Rebel that will have you laughing and emotional Rebel is truly fantastic in this film.

Adam DeVine : Adam is truly outstanding here! Adam very much like Rebel has been given Comedic driven roles for a long time which is sad as he’s so capable of other things he can do as an actor as he proves that here amazingly well. You would expect to see Adam as the funny friend in the film as he usually is but here yes he is the friend but it’s not that comedic which I didn’t suspect and I loved that. He had funny moments in the film but for the majority of the film he’s very dramatic in his performance given in the film. He plays this guy who likes Rebel but she has never noticed and he has this sheer look of just frustration as he’s been trying and she never notices and you can see the sadness in his eyes and voice. He dose it in a way that is so subtle though and it’s brilliant as he was able to flex his acting range and really show another side people haven’t seen him show onscreen before. Adam isn’t on screen for a massive amount of time but when he is he makes a impact with his fantastic delivery and incredible emotional range he gives here as he truly is giving something that shows him in something that we haven’t seen before and I loved it I hope he dose More dramatic driven roles as here it shows he can excel it in so strongly. He was able to give comedic wit but have the great dramatic weight and depth to his character that really makes him shine and he’s fantastic here.

Brandon Scott Jones : Brandon gives a hilarious and heartwarming supporting turn here! Brandon plays a character that is one of the tropes of a romantic comedy which is the gay best friend. Now this performance could of gone so wrong or worked as since it’s a film playing off of tropes it could of come off as offensive but it’s Brandon’s carful approach to this role that made it work. He plays it very over the top for a lot of the film with hilarious amounts of comedy and it landed every time. Due to the reason he’s not onscreen much he would come in every now and then and that’s why he was fun to watch because when he showed up he impacted the screen with his great onscreen presence and crackling delivery. He changed his voice he moves differently and just really gave this over top supporting performance that was very funny also due to his timing as well. But what made him also memorable was he didn’t play this as a one note performance when he easily could of he made his character very layered from one scene that brought such amazing depth to his character and to the actors emotional range. Theirs a moment where he stops being over the top and funny for a moment and has this very real and emotional moment that felt so genuine and authentic that it just impacted you so much Because you didn’t expect him to become so emotional. But that’s what was so great was he was able to switch that energy and bring it to a very smaller moment and be very vulnerable and it’s his great talent to switch his emotion and be so convincing in the snap of a finger was brilliant. He was so entertaining to watch onscreen whenever he was on screen he stole the scene an overall fantastic performance delivered by Brandon Scott Jones.

Todd Strauss - Schulson : Todd gives another smartly directed film! This man blew me away with his amazing film the final girls that was one of my favourite and most enjoyable films I saw of that year. Here he gives another knockout job at direction at capturing such a original and gripping premise that grabs you attention and Todd brings great style to this film that was very effective. He was able to make it comedic but also dramatic without the two tones not outweighing one of the others but having a even keel on it. He also provided fantastic character depth to each character in the film with getting the audience invested into the characters and really making you care for them instead of just giving hollow characters that aren’t memorable which a lot of comedies do. But here he was able to make the films setting that is set in the genre of a Romantic comedy so colourful and have great Easter eggs and references to other rom coms while giving such a fun filled film with a terrific cast getting great performances from all of them while giving fantastic humour that landed so well and a great amount of emotion as well and he mixed both greatly and delivers amazingly giving just such a fun time. He brought such heart emotion and laughter and it worked so well and Todd once again gives great direction with a original premise with great heart and humour Todd gives another very strong directed film.
