Movie Review : Happy Death Day 2U

Happy Death Day 2U
This is a very enjoyable follow up to its predecessor. This first film was one of the most enjoyable films I saw of 2017 and was thrilled to hear about them making a sequel and they deliver a great fun film sure it’s not as good as the first film but it’s a really fun time to be had. Happy Death Day 2U uses a similar style which they reference in the film which is Back To the Future Part II where they revisit the story from the first film but from another point of view and that film uses that very style and it was such fun as you get to learn so much more about the time loop and how it works and I love that we learn so more more backstory to how the time loop works to character backstory’s and so much more I loved their approach to this film. It’s scary but not exactly a horror it’s funny but it’s not a comedy and it’s romantic but not a romance film it uses all those elements and crafts this really enjoyable sequel.

First off, Jessica Rothe amazed me with her performance in the first film as their have been very few really stand out performances in horror films recently and she really captured my attention with her incredible performance and here she again gives another fantastic performance once again and this time shows such emotional range too which I didn’t expect she’s Marvelous and brilliant she can be funny but also heartwarming she was fantastic in this film. So was the entire rest of the cast all giving great work.

Secondly, This film was so well written since it’s a sequel it’s hard to make horror sequels good their are a handful of really good movies with a second film that works like the conjuring and the new Halloween sequel but for the most part it’s very hard to deliver a very well made horror sequel when by the point the first film is done the audience knows the villain they know what scares you will use next and who the characters are. Here they were able to bring a Sci - Fi Element to the film without it loosing the horror comedy tone that it set in the previous film. And instead of just reusing the same things yes I know they use the same story but they use it from a different angle and it was very well written that it worked. It also was able to do so much world building and tell you so much more about the backstory of the time loop and how it works as well as introducing new characters and still keeping you entertained with great comedy as well as some scares too. This film is one of the rare horror sequels that really worked and was able to craft a enjoyable horror sequel by coming at the story with a different point of view and the fantastic well done twist you don’t see coming as well as great amounts of emotion which I didn’t expect this film really did a fantastic job at giving a truly enjoyable sequel.

Overall Happy Death Day 2U is not better then its predecessor but it’s a fantastic follow up to the first film with great humour great scares and some emotional moments as well this film truly is a fantastic time to be had and such fun to watch I highly recommend everyone go see this film.

This film centres around Tree Gelbman and when she is caught in the same time loop as before she must figure out how to fix it

Rated PG - 13 : for violence, language, sexual material and thematic elements

Jessica Rothe : Jessica gives a fantastic layered emotional performance as Tree Gelbman once again. Jessica blew me away with her performance in the first film here she delves so much more deeper into her character and truly shows an amazing depth to her she didn’t have in the first film. Here she shows great lengths of emotion from her amazingly well timed humour she knows how to make the audience laugh and really use her cosmos skills in such a well done way. She also has great moments of vulnerability and emotion too that I didn’t anticipate from her in this film. Theirs actually a specific scene in the film that got me in tears because of her acting in the scene she moved me to tears and I didn’t think she would be able to Chanel so much emotions in a horror comedy but she dose and she pulls it off so well. You can tell she’s having so much fun onscreen and you really invest in her character because Jessica was able to deliver such a well done performance her delivery is fantastic she can be so emotional with just a wink, smile or look and then she can be so convincing and genuine when delivering her dialogue she just is so much fun to watch onscreen. And she explores so many layers to the character that weren’t explored the first time around and really has a fantastic character arc that is greatly done in the film. She was able to be a badass character while also at the same time be funny and emotional all at once and she could switch all those emotions in the flick of switch and it’s amazing to watch she just is so great in this film. Jessica overall delivers another fantastic performance that is so layered and such fun to watch.

Christopher Landon : Christopher blew me away in 2017 with the first film and how he was able to come up with such a smartly well thought out horror comedy and here he gives a great sequel. Here he really gives such more depth to the time loop and how it works and operates as well as showing great depth with the lead character and giving amazing amounts of layers throughout the film. He was able to use new things like Sci - fi styles but not let it out weigh the main tone of the film which is a horror comedy. He also expands the universe around the story with introducing new characters as well and crafting this story of revisiting the same story again from another point of view I thought was great and it was brilliantly done. Because since were revisiting the first film again we get insight into some things we didn’t the first time around and I loved that he also packs so much into the film. He gives you the scares and not in a way you see coming he really sets up the scares in a way where you don’t expect it and really crafts the horror in a well thought out way that makes you scared and then is able to make you laugh with it’s fantastically well timed comedy that felt so well done and well timed that it didn’t feel like forced comedy but felt so natural as the comedy landed so well. Then he also gives a surprising amount of emotion that really gets you emotional and is so well done that it got me in tears he just sprinkles the film with great lengths of emotion that was greatly done and then he also uses romance themes that also felt very well done as well. All of that was balanced so well by Christopher he directs this film so greatly as well as his fantastic writing he brought to the film too he dose another truly fantastic job at his direction a great job by Christopher.
