Movie Review : Cold Pursuit
Cold Pursuit
This film is one of Liam's best in years! Liam’s been doing lots of action films more recently with films like Run all night, non stop, the commuter just to name a few but he hasn’t done an action film since the first Taken film in 2009 which I regard as his last truly great film. Here he returns to form with Cold Pursuit which has been said to be his final action role if it is then this is a terrific final action film to go out on. In this film it isn’t your typical fast paced action film it dose take its time at parts which I appreciate so when their is moments of violence it’s a shock and pays off well compared to if it was happening every other scene. Don’t get me wrong theirs a ton of action packed in this film I had to check after for what the body count was as their was a lot of kills in this film.
First off, A lot of people are going to say this is a cheap rip off of the original version that came out a few years ago before calling it a rip off remake with the same plot keep in mind the man who directed the original version directed the remake of his own film so just keep that in mind. If the director is remaking his own piece of work I don’t see a reason to call or a remake it’s more of a retelling then it is a remake. As well what’s fantastic about this film is its ability to really be different in its execution of most action flicks. Here when their is a kill the screen will show the name of the character who just got killed off and at first I was like “what’s that?”. After a few times I respected that because I’ve never seen that before and that’s creative as hell
Secondly, what this film also dose greatly was show three entirely different narratives and mash them together. What I mean is you spend a lot of time with the antagonist of the film and really get to see his life and his relationships around him so you can actually see his story and side of things. Then on top of that you also see another Antagonist backstory which I won’t mention much cause I don’t want to spoil anything and you see their motives and their stakes they have as well. and then lastly you see all of that from Liam’s point of view as well and how he sees the overall picture and his motives and why he’s going on this Revenge quest and emotional back bone to why we’re rooting and pulling for his character.
Lastly, This film has fantastic character arcs and I really love that about any film is when your able to flesh out a character and get me invested in them so when the stakes are high I’m pulling for them because you set the ground work for their character and their backstory and that’s what this film dose so well is set up multiple backstory and motives to the characters onscreen so it’s not like their just characters doing these things just cause no they have a motive and clear vision of why their doing it and not giving you hollow characters but really making you feel satisfied and interested by each character onscreen. So the script was incredibly well crafted with very strong character arcs in this film that really got my attention.
Lastly, If you want to see a great redemption story this film is for you if you want a great action flick this is for you it really satisfies on all levels. It brings the action it packs in the backstory and character building and on top of it gives a great all around action film brought terrificly by Liam Neeson who gives one of his best films in recent time. Cold Pursuit was a fantastic time and a film I would definitely watch again I definitely recommend this film.
After the death of his son Nels Coxman goes on a journey to find out who killed his son and avenge his Son’s death and make the people pay for what they did.
Rated R : for strong violence, drug material, and some language including sexual references
Liam Neeson : Liam gives one of his best performances in a long time! Neeson has given great dramatic roles in films like Silence and Schindler’s List but we haven’t seen him give a solid action performance in a while! Here he packs all the great emotional weight he needs to get you to latch on to his character and really dominates the screen with his fantastic onscreen presence as well as having great range and delivery as well of his character he’s playing in the film. When we learn that his son was killed by a Heroine overdose theirs a moment where he just repeats he wasn’t a druggie and he says that same line a number of times. And it was effective because it shows that this man is in denial about his Son’s death and will deny any claim that is how his son died that is not the only scene with great emotional execution but theirs a number of them. He was able to capture this rage and anger inside of him that just released on these people that did terrible things to his Son and will do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of who killed his son. Liam was able to deliver his serious moments with great grit and anger that you really felt it with his raspy tone and look in his eye he was incredibly intimidating to witness onscreen. Then he also could be incredibly vulnerable and soft spoken with his voice he’s just so layered with his take on this character I love it because instead of doing a one dimensional performance with this character he makes it so complex. He really gets you to feel for him and root for him after seeing what this guy has been through and Liam gets you to care for him through his fantastic delivery on the performance at hand. He packs the emotion and brings the serious grit when needed but also just has this great action hero quality to him that is so charming and works so well Liam delivers one of his best performances I’ve seen in a very long time.
Hans Petter Moland : Hans gives a great retelling of his story! This filmmaker I’ve not seen any of his previous films before this but after viewing this film I definitely would watch his other projects as well. As he proves and handles action so well and so different then most directors. He was able to yes retell the same story but bring such a compelling style to it you forget its a retelling. He was able to tackle three separate narratives and mash them together and get you invested in each single story and character and really grip onto the story being told. He wasn’t being over the top with his violence in the film but rather put it in when needed and always had reason for it he never had violence just for effect which I liked. As well it was paced out so well that you build up to the final conclusion and it feels like a satisfying ending when you see it rather then just a random climatic ending with meaningless violence in it. He was able to craft the story so well with great character backstory and fantastic scope that you can’t take your eyes off the screen and just have fun and enjoy a really solid action flick. He’s able to use the dark action elements but also some dry humour as well layering it with a meaningful message to walk away with at the end and I loved that it was so complex and really showing so many different themes in this film. He dose a fantastic job at directing this film it is a solid film terrific direction here.
