Movie Review : Vice

Vice
This film is a intriguing and insightful look into a man many people may not be familiar with fronted by a phenomenal performance by Bale!  The film is a very slow film I will say it takes its time to really build but to some it could come across as boring but I found the pacing to be fine. The film’s core strengths lay in the performances at hand from its actors that contribute transformative performances that leave a lasting impact.

Firstly, the heart and soul of this film rides on the performance of its lead actor Christian Bale and boy dose he deliver. He transforms and inhabits Dick Cheney fully even at times it makes you feel like that is Cheney he is truly dazzling really taking the role head on and captures the essence of who this man was giving one of his strongest performances to date! As well as a greatly well rounded supporting cast who also contribute greatly to the film. With Sam Rockwell, Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Tyler Perry all giving solid supporting turns that strengthen the film in its more weaker parts. The only issue I would of had with the film was since the film has such a terrific cast it felt like at times the entire cast was not fully used to its full potential for example Amy Adams who is striking in the film was fantastic but was hardly in the film she had her fair share of moments onscreen but I couldn’t help but feel like I want to see more of her as she was giving such great work but didn’t get enough scenes to showcase it. Same goes for Rockwell as his turn as George W. Bush he also felt very underused and sidelined in the film having very few moments onscreen. That would be my only flaw that really stood out to me.

Secondly, The film also showcases another  strongly directed film by Adam McKay who cements himself as a dynamic director. The Big Short was a starting point showing people that he can tackle more then just comedic material but he also can do great dramatic material as well. Here he shows that he is capable at delivering dramatic material and very heavy topics in a refreshing and entertaining way. He has a very different approach to dramatic material and its very refreshing as his style is very different on serious topics then if someone else was to do it.

Lastly, This film is a slow build throughout but it is due to the transformative performance by Bale that will keep you captivated and amazed to keep you watching as well as its incredibly compelling story told at hand Vice is a well acted and entertaining film I recommend people check this out.

This film Chronicles Dick Cheney’s impactful reign as Vice President as well as a peak into his personal life showing how this man changed the course of history.

Rated R : for language and some violent images

Christian Bale : Bale delivers one of his best performances of his career! Bale is one of the hardest working actors who dedicates himself to the craft inhabiting the role he takes on fully transforming himself to do justice to the role he is given. In this film he plays former Vice President Dick Cheney and his work in this is jaw droopingly astonishing. Christian has transformed time and time again for his work but here he truly gives something special that is brilliant. He looks, sounds, moves and talks like Cheney investing himself fully to the role and its incredible because it didn’t look like Christian at all onscreen that looked like the former Vice President and he just totally disasters into the role giving a tremendous performance. He is very soft spoken and but is able to be so very emotive and expressive with his face and through his delivery. In many ways it is a emotionally restraint performance that he’s showing onscreen as he has great layers of emotion in the film but he is able to deliver it in such a quiet and reserved way but at the same time give such great emotional depth and impact when he speaks and crackles and shines through every moment onscreen. Since this film spans years of his life we get to see a Arc of who Cheney was when he was just your average Joe to the Vice President and their is so much Bale goes through emotionally and its captivating to witness unfold onscreen as when the years go by for this guy he changes by the end of the film  from the person he was at the beginning. Showing great depth and layers of who this person and Bale just knocks it out of the park when he talks you feel it and believe him he is so genuine when he speaks to the look in his eyes he is one hundred and ten percent invested to each frame he is in. He shows so much emotion by being so reserved and its a very special performance as Bale goes places I haven’t seen him go before and it pays off as Bale showcases a unrecognizable performance that is scene stealing giving his best performance to date showing great attention to detail of who this man was from how he would look at someone to how he would talk with a raspy tone he picked up on all the small things and took it head on and really delivers a performance that is truly phenomenal to watch onscreen.

Adam McKay : Adam Shows again amazing Strength with his direction and style on this film and its subject shown at hand. He proved himself as a capable director who can do more then just comedy with his solid work with the Big Short here he again dose another amazing job at captivating the audience with his striking Directional styles. He uses sprinkles of Comedy in this rather heavy handed drama and it works greatly. He dose not make the material jokey but has very sly humour in it that really jelled really well. As well he was able to tackle some very hard topics incredibly well by not ignoring the more disturbing elements but he shows the events for how they happened and not sugar coating the material whatsoever. He was able to show this life of this man who was very private and show the impact he had on politics and the world as well. It never felt rushed but it seemed like a great portrait into this mans life and that it also was able to teach people about him and the things he did that made such a impact. Adam has great strength at like I said earlier tackling heavy handed topics through dry humour and it works so perfectly as he also gets great performances from his cast and a scene stealing performance from Bale. Adam shows once again that he can tackle fact based drama material in a fresh and stylistic way that makes him standout and his films so compelling to watch Adam again dose another marvellous job here.
