Movie Review : Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns
This is a sequel that will delight and bring the childlike wonder back into your eyes. This is a film that I was very nervous about as the first one is my favourite live action Film Disney has done and it’s practically perfect in every way so to make a follow up to such a landmark and classic of Disney their was a massive amount of expectations I had. And it delivered amazingly well it gives small nods to the first film without it relying on the film that came before it in order to do a great sequel but rather they were able to come up with a very entertaining and fun follow up that was incredibly well done.

Firstly, Emily Blunt is magnificent as the title role. Since Andrews to many is the only Mary Poppins and she is known worldwide for that role Blunt had a lot of people watching her to see if she would do the character justice and boy dose she ever. She doesn’t imitate Julie’s portrayal of the character but rather makes it her own giving her own spin on the character with great charm and wonderful charisma. The rest of the cast as well all contribute great performances but it’s Blunt’s fantastical performance that will leave you smiling.

Secondly, The film dose a tremendous job at crafting a totally original story instead of retreading the same path it didn’t try to outmatch the first film but rather just make a enjoyable tale with our favourite Nanny. It carried amazing childlike wonder with great musical numbers with music that was original and catchy adding with a great emotional punch that is well placed and executed.

Lastly, The film is going to introduce a whole new generation to Mary Poppins with this film which I think is fantastic it will please ages young and old Reminding us of childlike wonder with fantastic style and a terrific performance by Blunt who carries the film with great style Poppins is a magically special sequel that will leave you entertained and smiling.

This film follows the banks children many years later they are on the brink of loosing their family home having 5 days to pay back the bank or they take their house with no hope until a Old friend from the skies comes back to bring back much needed happiness

Rated PG : for some mild thematic elements and brief action

Emily Blunt : Blunt delivers a charming and magical performance as Poppins! Emily brings her own spin on the title role with great charm and wit. Emily doesn’t imitate Julie’s portrayal of the character but makes it her own and truly delivers a fun and charming performance that is very entertaining. The moment she comes across the screen she steals the show with her incredible screen presence and charisma you can’t take your eyes off of her. She carries herself with great authority and stature and then brings this great voice to the character that is very strict but also very kind hearted. She has this spark in her eye that she keeps throughout the film bringing such a softness to the kids and has a very emotionally filled moment with the kids that I didn’t expect and then the next she can be so humorous and not in a over the top way but with such a Dry sense of humour. She just has such a range of layers she brings to this loved character Emily brings the playfulness and wonder we love about Poppins but she also can be very strict and emotionally impact as well and that’s what I loved about Emily is she is able to transition through so many moments with so many different emotions and make it look effortless. Emily really has fun with the character she’s playing onscreen and you can tell she’s having a blast playing Poppins but also is committed fully to doing the character justice but in a fresh and her own style of the role. I think Emily was the perfect choice to take on the character as she brings such charisma and energy to the character and really have fun with the role while showing great layers to her with humour emotion and dramatic moments too and their perfectly balanced due to her excellent range and her fantastic ability to deliver her dialogue in such great style. Emily shows audiences that she can tackle Poppins in a fresh new way by bringing her own attributes to it but keeping it entertaining Blunt amazes me with her fantastic performance here showing great character and emotional depth as this was a role many have expectations for and I think she did a outstanding job at it.

Rob Marshall : Marshall gives a greatly directed film! Marshall has done Musicals before with his amazing work on Chicago and Into The Woods so I know he can do musicals and he can do them well but this is a whole different thing. As Poppins is such a loved story by so many he had a tall order to live up to on delivering a sequel and I think Marshall did a great job with the film. He didn’t use the previous film as a crutch or retell the same story he brings this entirely new story to life while at the same time having little Easter eggs to the first film without it feeding off nostalgia  the entire time. He entertains the audience with incredible visuals as well as great musical pieces but it’s not all flashy and showy he dose also have great smaller and more emotional moments to that show great character building parts that contribute to the film. I also appreciate that he wanted to use the hand drawn animation that was used in the first film and not rely on CGI animation which he easily could of done but he used Hand drawn which I respect so much as I hoped he would and did. He also builds upon the world of Poppins by also showing new characters as well and I think his style and the material itself worked so well together. Rob just knew how to do this film and how to do the sequel to one of Disney’s most popular properties justice and he delivered on all fronts showing the childlike wonder that the first film brought to audiences while also capturing a greatly done sequel that didn’t feel like the same plot as the first but really give a new story. Rob dose a outstanding job with this sequel and also introducing a whole new generation to this loved character.
