Movie Review : Beautiful Boy

Beautiful Boy
This film is an emotionally driven film brought to the screen brilliantly by Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet’s outstanding performances at the centre of it. This film had me have an emotional breakdown after the film finished it was so emotionally gutting but that’s what also makes the film so great was it’s ability to be so real and raw throughout its telling of this story.

Firstly, Why this film really gets you to invest into its main characters is all due to the powerhouse performances given by its two lead actors. Steve Carell and Timothee both give incredible performances that if not for their amazing commitment to these characters you wouldn’t invest in them and it’s the performances that these two provide that bring you to tears and really care about the father and son dynamic that is shown through this film.

Secondly, The film is so honest and as real as possible in its depiction of Drug Addiction. The film doesn’t shy away from the very dark moments that Addiction can have over someone it shows all of it and it makes the film even more gripping but also heartbreaking to watch because if that. You see how it can destroy so many people’s family’s and lives because if it so I admire its ability to not sugarcoat the material but be as real and truthful in its telling as possible.

Lastly, This film is an emotionally powerful film that will have you in tears from the strong performances from its lead actors at hand and the subject matter as well it is informative, heartbreaking, emotional, well acted and a film that doesn’t glamorize the Addiction of Drugs. This is a film I think everyone should see it’s truly outstanding.

This film chronicles a  true story of a father and son relationship as the son delves deep into drugs his father goes many depths to be their for him and save him

Rated R : for drug content throughout, language, and brief sexual material

Timothee Chalamet : Timothee delivers a emotionally raw performance that will have you in tears! This actor has become a name to take notice of from his turn in last years call me by your name and Lady Bird this Actor is one to keep an eye on because he is going to become massively successful and I’ll even say he’s on the path to be the next legendary actor. For an actor so young to choose such heavy material films and also give knockout performances time and time again this an actor who everyone should keep an eye on. Chalamet delivers a truly captivating performance that is one of the best performances of the year. He plays a real life person Nicolas Sheff who was addicted to Drugs for a long period of time and he doesn’t make his take on an Addict a stereotype he makes it as brutally real and honest in his portrayal as possible giving a incredible depth of emotion that is brilliantly done onscreen. He has moments where he’s really wanting to be better and you can see the shaking in his body to the desperation in his voice and the tears in his eyes  and it looks and sounds so genuine he took this head on and the work has paid off as he really gives a truly strong performance. Their are so many different sides and layers that Timothee has brought to this role and performance that is scene stealing he commits to every aspect of the frame showing how an Addict would really feel and really be like and it’s stunning  how much layers of emotion he brought to this film. Theirs scene after scene that he shines he shines through the entire film but he nearly steals the show from the entire cast his performance is that powerful in the film. He has a scene where he is at a diner with his dad and starts off so calm and relaxed and then he eventually rises with emotion and is yelling by the end begging for money and it’s his amazing emotional timing and acting that really makes it all work. It didn’t come off as over the top he really captures the emotional stress, sadness and hardships that is on him and voices it so well and so powerfully in the film. He starts off clean and then gets into drugs and by the end gets clean and do theirs a character arc Timothee goes through emotionally where he gets to express so many different emotions in so many different ways and he gives a scene stealing performance that will stay with you. Timothee really shows the pain that Addiction has over him and how he’s begging his father to help him but he needs to fix himself first his father tells him and it’s an emotional moment in the film and Timothee is able to not just be so emotionally gripping with his delivery but with his eyes he can break your heart just by seeing the pain in this young man’s face that he wants to be better and Timothee really dose Nicolas the man he’s portraying justice and Addiction survivors justice too by not making it a impression but really and truly showing how painful it is and how it really effects them with their family and their mental state too Chalamet shines in a performance that is truly amazing to watch unfold onscreen.

Steve Carell : Steve gives an emotionally well captured performance of a father desperate to save his son. Carell gives once again another striking performance as a father who will stop at nothing to make sure his son is safe and doesn’t essentially die from drugs and the way he portrays this father is heartbreaking. Carell plays it in such a soft and quiet way that’s so emotionally reserved but so utterly brilliant in his performance. He goes through such a emotional character arc and depth that is stunning to witness. He has this massive Weight on his shoulders and massive amount of stress that he carries and Carell shows it with such incredible emotional vulnerability bringing may layers of depth to his performance and he really commits to every frame doing justice to the father he portrays but also how a father would try to help their son if they were in that situation. He becomes so invested into helping his son it becomes the only thing in his life he cares about and the sheer emotion that Carell shows is truly outstanding. He can be so emotionally kept to himself but then can be so heartbreaking with just crying in tears and trying to hold it back and be strong but breaks and can’t contain it anymore to incredible bursts of anger due to such frustration but you see so much passion and layers in his performance you can’t help but get swept up in what he’s showcasing onscreen. Steve Carell is a tour de force giving an electrifying performance.

Felix Van Groeningen : Felix captures the tones of addiction, mental illness and the importance of family with incredible direction. Felix is a Director who I am unfamiliar with but will be on who’s work I’ll definitely be paying attention too after seeing what he did with this film because his work here is fantastic. He really dose justice to the family that this story is based off of and he shows the darkness and loneliness of Addiction and how it can utterly destroy someone and effect the loved ones around them. He shows the struggles family’s trying to help loved ones get better from Addiction  and the sheer honesty he brings to the screen is so raw and well done. He never sugarcoats anything if it gets dark the scene will get dark and he will push it their as far as it needs to go because he wanted to show the sheer truth and honesty in the subject matter and I admire that. He also was able to write it in ways where you can take different lessons to walk away with so if you’ve been a survivor of Drug Addiction he shows your not alone and you can be helped and it’ll be ok then he also shows this father and son dynamic for those who have ever had problems with their father and then showing the importance of Family and he intertwines these three tones so well into the film so no matter what you’ve been through you can be able to relate to something in some way or another in the film. It dose get disturbing at times but that’s his intention because your not supposed to feel comfortable when seeing Drug Addiction and brings the most authentic and realistic shine on the subject that I’ve ever seen put on film. Felix also gets fantastic performances from his entire cast and gets you to really believe these actors are actually a family and it looks so genuine and real. He did such a fantastic job at directing this film showing one of the strongest directed and written films of the year that I’ve seen Felix is a brilliant filmmaker amazing direction Felix.
