Movie Review : The Spy Who Dumped Me

The Spy Who Dumped Me
This film is another typical comedy action film with some enjoyable moments. This film I really wanted to like as I love Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon in a spy comedy with action yea you could say I was excited. Now after seeing it I was disappointed as it really was fifty fifty for me half of the film was enjoyable the other half not so much.

First off the humour in this film either works at times and lands with the jokes and sometimes it just doesn’t land and the humour comes off either badly written or just awkward. To me humour is the funniest when it’s not trying to be if you purposely try to make the audience laugh and force them to laugh for me it doesn’t seem effective as it should come natural humour shouldn’t be forced to make you laugh. And their were definitely moments where they really were pushing that element of “oh this is really funny no seriously laugh at it” and that I don’t find amusing in the slightest like I said some jokes were well done and some weren’t it’s half and half with the humour in this film.

Secondly, the plot felt very unoriginal and like I’ve seen this premise before and after thinking about it this film feels very very similar to the 2015 action comedy film Spy and it even has a revel towards the end of the film that is just like Spy and I just don’t like how this film could of gone any route it wanted with its cast and the tone it was setting but instead chose the route we have seen a thousand times in action comedy’s bringing nothing new to the table and recycling old cliques and moments used in other films. It didn’t feel enjoyable it felt lazy and unoriginal in its storytelling.

The one positive I will tell you I throughly enjoyed was the chemistry shared by its two main leads they have fantastic onscreen chemistry that really shines through in each moment of this film and to add the action sequences are incredibly well executed also if not for Kate’s fun performance I wouldn’t of enjoyed this film at all if not for those two points.

Lastly, The Spy Who Dumped me even with its great star power attached to the cast and great onscreen chemistry shared by its leads doesn’t make up for its lazy script and unoriginal premises that feels as it’s just another generic comedy action film that doesn’t try to bring anything new to the table this film has its fun moments here and their but overall this film could of been better and been great rather then just ok.

This film revolves around a woman who got dumped by her boyfriend only to find out that he is working for the CIA and his life is in danger and after she’s told this she gets involved in it all resulting in an adventure with spy’s her friend and nothing she would of thought of.

Rated R : Bloody images, violence and language throughout

Kate McKinnon : Kate delivers a fun performance! Kate is a comedic actor who’s talent elevates the film when she’s onscreen because she always delivers and always entertains the audience with her fantastic comedic abilities and dose so here again. In this film she works with what she’s given and really has fun with this character and plays a friend who’s the energetic comic relief and really has fantastic comedic timing making me laugh and also showing complexity to her performance as she also brings layers and emotional depth to her character that she hasn’t shown onscreen before and she walks a great line of showing comedy but also having bits of emotion spread out through her performance showing fantastic range from her. She delivers her dialogue so well and never gives less then her best she just has fun onscreen and you can really tell Kate really saves this film with her fantastic comedic performance that leaves you with a big grin on your face. Once again Kate gives another fantastic performance.

Susanne Fogel : Susanne gives poor direction on this film that could of been so much better! This filmmaker I have only seen one film of here prior to seeing this which I did enjoy but her work here could of been so much better. Her execution of the film was not done well throughout the film she goes through so many tones and doesn’t establish what she wants one moment it’s funny the next it’s a spy film so she tonally all over the place. Adding to that she also uses so many things done in other comedy action films which feels lazy as she could of gone so many different routes with this film but just chose to make it like so many other films like it that came before. The runtime of this film also for a comedy film is so long it’s almost a 2 hour comedy film that could of had 30 minutes cut down. Then the comedy at times were well written and smartly executed and then some of the jokes felt so badly written so it’s fifty fifty with the comedy and that’s how I felt about the film and her direction she had some good elements of direction but for the most part  she could of been better with her direction and more original and creative in her take on this story instead of recycling old cliques that we’ve seen so many times. She has very little character development and so you don’t invest in the characters and results in a forgettable film and Susanne could of been a lot better if she put some heart into this film but poor direction here.
