Movie Review : The Old Man & The Gun
The Old Man & The Gun
This is a beautiful final film for Mr Redford’s last performance that is amazingly well captured onscreen. This film is such a enjoyable film with a fantastic cast from its lead Robert Redford to Sissy Spacek and it is really a film about enjoying the things in life and taking a moment to enjoy the small things. Even though this film is based on a true story and is about a man who robbed banks it’s so much deeper then that too.
This film isn’t a crime thriller it is a slow burn drama with a crime element to it. So those expecting some sort of crime thriller this is not it this is a deep dream with crime aspects to the story but it is not the heart of the film. This film captures Robert Redford’s final onscreen masterfully with a great supporting turn by Sissy Spacek this film is just not your usual drama bio pic film. It is a film that talks about living in the moment and how this man has had a life of crime and wants to just live and its such a rich and well told story you will be captivated to the very end if its by the great performances at hand or the magnificent storytelling as well.
Lastly, This film is an all around great film with a truly intriguing true story that is shockingly true wrapped with incredibly strong source material and a final performance by Mr Redford that will leave you grinning and emotional The Old Man And The Gun is an incredibly enjoyable film I recommend go see.
This film is based on true events and is about a man who has had a life of crime and at the age of 70 robs banks and never gets caught until someone is put on the case to track this bank robber down but he is more cunning then he would expect him to be.
Rated PG - 13 : For Brief Strong Language
Robert Redford : Redford gives his final performance with great grace and charm! This man is a class act he has given us amazing performances over the years from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, The Sting and Out Of Africa he has always entertained us with his great swagger and charming personality that wins us over time and time again. Here he gives us his final ever onscreen performance with The Old Man And The Gun and he is an absolute knockout in it. In this film he plays a man who has had a life of crime and is 70 and keeps at it but then the trail starts to heat up when someone is on the case after him. The way he plays this character only Robert would be able to make it work. Why I say that is because he brings this charming and charisma to the role that just worked so perfectly. He brings the words to life by giving it such impact and meaning when he talks he is so soft spoken but he can make you smirk and laugh and get emotional just by his delivery. He just really has fun with the role he has here and you can see he is he brings the emotion as well because since he is giving this film as his final performance he gives this last performance his all and he dose not even yell or show a ton of different emotions but a good few and it works so well. He is relatively calm throughout the whole film and its the sparkle in his eye and the smile on his face that he gets you so invested into his character and also gets you emotional as you know this is the last time your going to see this screen icon on the big screen. He brings quite a bit of depth to the character that I didn’t really expect he tells you what he wants you to know but leaves his character for the most part s mystery and Robert just has this quality he brings to the film that you cant look away he is just so captivating to watch onscreen. Overall Robert Redford gives a triumph performance for his final time in front of the camera a masterful last performance to go out on Mr Redford.
Sissy Spacek : Sissy gives a enjoyable supporting turn in this film! Sissy is an actress who will forever be known for her work in the Horror film that launched her into superstardom Carrie. But here she goes the serious route with a dramatic role and I have to say she’s terrific in this film. She plays this girl who Redford meets in the beginning of the film and she’s in most of it and she plays this local girl who is falling for this guy and it is so cute to watch unfold onscreen. She plays this character with such great grace and brilliant emotion that really shines through onscreen. Giving great amounts of emotional delivery and fantastic chemistry with her Redford onscreen she really just fit this character so well and plays it as this local girl who’s just wanting to live her life and do things she can before she dies and the way Sissy was able to convey that was emotionally impactful. She could make you cry with a line or smile with a smirk she just gives such a charming and well rounded supporting turn in this film.
David Lowery : This man gives fantastic direction here! The filmmaker who gave us Pete’s Dragon knocks it out of the park with his fantastic directing styles here. In the film he writes and directs the picture and really gets you invested into the source material and the characters surrounding the plot. He didn’t make this your typical crime thriller but rather a film about age and life with a crime aspect to it but that’s not the driving force of the film or it’s message he gets you to take away from it. He was able to balance great moments of heart and emotion while also showing the crime aspect of it from the authorities point of view and then from Redford’s characters point of view and it was this kind of ping pong the story was going with showing the different perspectives and I thought he brilliantly executed the story in such a refreshing take on a drama. He also was able to get fantastic performances from its cast while giving a fantastic farewell to the screen legend Robert Redford in his final onscreen performance and letting him go out one more time in such style. David took a true story and really got the audience to invest due to the shocking source material and its cast at hand while also making it very emotional due to it being Redford’s last performance he delivers on all levels giving an all around entertaining film that works for a large part due to its great director solid work by Lowery here.
The Lighting : The colours used in the film was very orange and yellow it had this old fashioned look to the frame that I loved. Since it is Redford’s last performance they brought this old fashioned movie star look to the picture that really made it pop with its colours but also really jelled well with the story at hand too and was also really pretty looking due to its ability to show such vibrant tones through the film that was fantastic. Overall the lighting was fantastic great job guys.
