Movie Review : A Star Is Born (2018)

A Star Is Born (2018)
This is one of the years best films and a film that will emotionally knock the wind out of you! Bradley Cooper has executed masterful work showcasing incredible talent as a Director as well as giving one of his best performances ever. This film truly is special and a film that will amaze you and move you. The entire cast showcases incredible work from Bradley to GaGa to Sam Elliot. Every actor in this film showcases great work but the performance that stole the show in many ways was the wonderful the beautiful Lady GaGa. Her performance is heartbreaking, Jaw dropping and outstanding she is brilliant in the film giving a knockout performance for her acting debut. This film is truly something special that is brilliantly acted, with great music and a fantastic retelling on a classic Story A Star Is Born is a terrific film that is one of the years best and one of the best films in general to come along in a long time that will leave you speechless.

Bradley Cooper delivers masterful direction on this film. This film is done brilliantly by Cooper who really shows the highs and lows of a musician, fame and being in the spotlight as well as dealing with very deep rooted tones as well that are well executed. The film also deals with substance abuse and relationships it just felt so real and authentic and such a look behind the curtain to how things operate in the music industry and how it's not all glamours the way they make it out to be. And the ability to be so truthful and real in this retelling of the story is what makes it different and really stand out. While also seeing top notch performances from the cast as well.

Overall this film has romance, drama, music and everything in between truly showing a honest look at the music industry with Cooper giving great direction at the forth adaption of this story but brings so much of a fresh and different take on the story surrounded with terrific award caliber performances that will amaze you. This film will warm your heart, break your heart and it's an experience that stays with you long after the film is over This is a masterful film that will be talked about years to come.

Rated R : for language throughout, some sexuality/nudity and substance abuse

This film centres around a Man named Jackson Maine who is a massively popular country singer but has demons he wrestles with everyday and one day stumbles upon this girl with a tremendous voice he falls in love with and wants the world to hear but as she rises in fame he continues down a very self destructive path

Bradley Cooper : Bradly shows one of his most emotional, raw and all around one of his best performances period. He plays Jackson Maine a country singer who also is a alcoholic and battles with his  emotional demons throughout the film. The way Bradly was able to portray this character onscreen was magnificent he brought such a real and raw take on this character that made it feel so lived in. He made you really feel the weight that rests on this man’s shoulders that he carries with him. It’s very powerful how Bradly delivers his dialogue he even transforms his voice to fully take on this character he brings a real raspy and deep sound to the character that fit the role greatly but also made for such dazzling dialogue delivery. When he speaks he has this honest and sadness in his voice you can hear that is incredible Cooper just gives his sweat blood and tears to this role and film. He goes through such a arc character wise in the film from the beginning is hopeful and progressively gets worse as the film goes on with his drinking habits. And Bradly really steps up to the plate and gives such a layered emotional performance that will move you to tears. He has delivered great work before but this performance is next to American Sniper as his best work to date he just really brings it and you can’t take your eyes off of him. When he sings it feels as if it comes from a real place that is so genuine. He just brought Jackson to the screen and gave him such emotion, sadness and raw honesty that I haven’t seen him channel something like what he dose here in any of his other performances. He also could be so emotive from his eyes the look into his eyes were so real and he could convey such serious moments from his facial expressions without a word being uttered. And he gives moments of joy, sadness and sheer loneliness that really feels genuine. Theirs a scene where he’s so drunk and gets  onstage and just is so drunk and he really made you see the hardships this man has been through and how broken he is and how serious it is and Bradly just knocked it out of the park by giving a performance that felt as it came from such a real place emotionally and also giving such a raw performance that will dazzle and amaze you and bring you to Tears Bradly is phenomenal in this film.

Lady GaGa : GaGa gives a performance for the ages! This is the first ever time GaGa has done a role on the big screen and she’s phenomenal. What amazed me so much about her work in the film is this is her first time acting on the big screen and makes it look so natural. She plays Ally a waitress who also works at a Drag Bar and gets her shot at showing her talent after she meets Jackson. The way she conveys and delivers her approach to the character gave me chills and left me in tears. She brings such a honesty to the role when she speaks she dominates the screen with her sparkling performance your seeing onscreen. She makes you believe she wants to just be her and herself and sing the way she wants and I also give credit to GaGa for bringing some of her own experiences of her things she’s had to deal  with in the music industry into the film as it also got me to really understand her better and really feel for her in so many ways. Their were small things she would do that would blow me away such as the way she looks at Jackson you can see in her eyes how she really loves and cares for him. Her emotional range in this film is outstanding she could be funny and full of such happiness then be full of such sadness and heartbreak with a single tear she’d down her face and she speaks her lines in a way that she makes you believe that what she says she means it. She was so emotionally raw and real onscreen that is captivating from start to finish. I haven’t seen a performance especially from someone who’s first take on acting blow me away the way she dose here. She gives one of the best performances I’ve seen in years that made me laugh, cry and leave me amazed. Her voice as well when she sings it comes from such a honest place and brings those lyrics to life with such deep meaning from how she expresses them it’s so powerful. I believe that this is hands down a  Oscar caliber performance that will win her the Oscar as she deserves all of what comes from this film as she’s so brilliant in the film and gives such a emotionally raw performance that will astonish and amaze you.

Sam Elliot : Elliot gives an absolutely gripping Supporting performance in this film! Sam has always been one of those actors who’s such a joy to see onscreen and here he dominates the screen with his character in this film. He plays Booby Jackson’s older brother who is also his manager and is always looking after him due to the fact Jackson is an alcoholic he’s always having to take care of him and also at the same time be his manager and look out for his best interest. The way Sam showcases that in the film is so powerful. He has moments with Cooper in the film and the chemistry they share is electric really making you believe their actually brothers. At the same time those scenes he has with Bradly is truly moving parts in the film that Sam truly shines. He brings such a weight to his shoulders that you really see that he genuinely cares for his brother and he has a moment where he tells Jackson how much he has to basically cradle him over the years and his  voice cracks with sadness and Elliot just is emotionally captivating he truly really makes you believe he is this character and all the emotion packed with him comes across so real. He’s not onscreen for the whole film but when he’s onscreen you can’t take your eyes off of him. He also has another moment that moved me which was Jackson says how he looks up to his brother and he turns his face Elliot and you see his eyes Red about to break down in tears because of what Jackson said and it hits him like a wave and you can see that it looks as it really effected him and Elliot expresses it incredibly onscreen. He also gives such life to his dialogue he just is so damn good in the film and gives a truly brilliant supporting performance that is one of the best Supporting performances I’ve seen all year he truly is fantastic in this film.

Bradly Cooper : Cooper Gives one of the best Directional Debuts I’ve seen in a very long time. Bradly had so much Weight on his shoulders for this film. For the fact it was the forth retelling of this story as well he’s never directed before and cast a lead actress who’s never done a film before and wow he pulls it off and dose a damn good job. He Wrote the music, sang, acts, produces and directs and he knocks it out of the park. What I love so much was his approach to this story. It’s been told so many times already so he took it and made the audience look at it from a fresh and different angle. As well as his ability to shine a brutal and honest light on Fame and the music Industry was so powerfully executed onscreen. He shows the highs and lows of the music industry but also that fame is not as glamours that it may appear to be. Also he deals with the tone of substance abuse through the film and how it can really destroy a human being and effect the ones you love around you he just left me speechless with his direction here. He also has great amounts of music in it that really is a character of its own in the film and he never has a moment where their in the audience you always see the music onstage and from the pint of view of watching it from the stage and I loved that. Ontop of the fact he did all his own signing was amazing and he never over dose the music and knows when to put it in parts of the film and use the music he wrote for the film and have it also express a moment or feeling the character be feeling through the music I loved that. And then the chemistry he made sure that the chemistry between him and GaGa works because if you don’t invest into this characters and care for them in the first few minutes the film doesn’t work and you won’t go down the journey with them and he dose it in such an amazing way that you care for both of them and really care for them on top of the amazing chemistry shared with GaGa he really gets you to believe that they are in love and as you see it onscreen their chemistry shared is so electric and so natural you believe them the moment their onscreen together that they love and support one another. Overall Bradly shines a light on the music industry and fame giving a raw and honest shine on it while also giving a incredible forth retelling of such a classic story that feels fresh and works on every level. While getting amazing work from the cast wrapped with outstanding music giving a Directed film that is one of the best directed films of the year and one of the best I’ve seen in years he dose a tremendous job and can’t wait to see what he dose next Bradley shows he  is a genius as a director.

The Soundtrack : The Music in the film really is a character in its own in the film. The songs chosen in the film also express how a character may be feeling or going through and show it though the lyrics and makes it so much more powerful. It’s incredible music that you’ll be singing for weeks and also that it’s sung live it sounds so much more better and natural since it’s recorded live. You’ll love the music in this film it’s one of the best film soundtracks I’ve heard ever.
