Movie Review : First Man

First Man
This film is a visual spectacle that is enjoyable but overlong. First Man is Damien Chazelle's latest film and I'll say this its a damn good film that everyone should see. It's a space epic that has stunning cinematography, strong performances from its cast and an interesting story on Neil Armstrong that tells more about the man that many may not know about him.

First off, Damien is the reason I checked out this film because since his work with Whiplash and then followed up with La La Land Damien has been a filmmaker to watch as he's been crafting incredible work onscreen and brings us his latest film that is a bio pic on Neil Armstrong now is it as good as his previous work? No but it still is a strong film for Chazelle as he proves that he can also tackle visual heavy films and still balance out the story and keep you engaged without it just being visual eye candy and the story falling into the background. That isn't it at all he really captures and shows the life of Armstrong through his highs and lows and you really feel as you are experiencing everything with him and I loved that.  This film also captures fantastic onscreen performances from the cast. Ryan Gosling delivers a emotionally captivating performance that is incredible and Claire Foy gives a fantastic supporting turn in this film. The acting delivered by its cast is fantastic and each actor really makes you genuinely care for them and really believe they are that person.

Secondly, Now since I pointed out what I liked about the film I have to point out what I didn't like about the film. The main issue I had with this film is the pacing this clocks in around two hours and twenty one minutes which is a pretty long film and their were moments and scenes that could of been shortened or cut out as the film at times can feel overlong and dragged out due to its long runtime but besides that for flaws in the film that's the only one that really bothered me.

Lastly, This film really captures the stress and world of Space and all the technical aspects it took to go to the Moon which I loved it really details and showcases the event in a breathtaking sequence while also giving great insight into Neil Armstrong's life and mindset leading up to the mission which is exacted greatly. This film is fantastic a truly spectacular film done greatly by Damien I highly recommend people check this film out.

Rated PG - 13 : For some Thematic Content involving peril, and brief strong language

This film Chronicles Neil Armstrong's personal life and his mindset leading up to the moon landing

Ryan Gosling : Gosling Delivers an emotionally raw portrayal of Neil Armstrong. He recently has been really nailing every role that comes his way with his recent work in the critically acclaimed La La Land and in my opinion the overlooked great film The Nice Guys. Now he gives another terrific performance as his take on Neil Armstrong and he shows it with fantastic emotion. He doesn’t just scratch the surface of who Armstrong is but he really gets into the head space and mental state he was in during his hardships of when he lost his daughter to the trial runs for NSA. He looks like Neil and speaks in such a soft spoken way but could be so emotive with his face giving layer upon layer of emotion. Neil goes through so much personally before the moon landing mission and it gave Ryan a massive amount of room to be able to showcase who this man was behind closed doors as a family man and how he was able to deal with some of the hard and brutal things he had to deal with. And Ryan’s execution of is nothing short of greatness due to the fact he really gets you to see him at his most vulnerable and emotionally open. He is very quiet and keeps things to himself so when he breaks into tears it feels like a wave of emotion and It’s greatly performed by Ryan. Ryan can give the slightest look and you can see how he is feeling or even if he sees that he’s ok his eyes will say differently he just took this guy head on and wanted to portray him as accurate as possible and he dose so with fantastic emotional depth showing who he was at work and at home Ryan delivers another truly strong performance once again.

Claire Foy : Claire gives a emotionally driven supporting performance. Claire is one of those actresses no matter what she’s in she always gives her one hundred and ten percent to the role and dose so here. She plays Neil Armstrong’s wife and really carries a lot of stress and emotion due to the fact she has to constantly see her husband at work and when he’s back is very quiet and has to keep things together for him and for the family and Foy’s execution of it was tremendous. Her performance was fantastic she isn’t on screen for as much of the film but when she is she crackles in greatness. You really see the stress keep adding to her and adding to her as this weight becomes so much and then ultimately explodes at Neil by the end of it and she shows incredible emotional layers and depth to her performance. She speaks and delivers her dialogue in such a genuine and believable way that it feels that it’s coming from such a real place she is committed one hundred percent to every scene she’s in and gives a tremendous supporting turn as Neil’s wife showcasing even in supporting roles she can be a scene stealer Claire Foy is magnificent.

Damien Chazelle : Damien brings incredible style to this true story film. Damien blew me away with his ability to do a space drama as their not easy to do and if done right are amazing. In this film he really makes it feel as authentic, and realistic as possible Done to every costume and set. He really gets you to feel as if your back in the 60’s and brings this grained look to the picture that immersed you into each frame and then also captures incredible work from his cast each actor giving solid work. On top of jaw dropping visuals that truly take your breath away. He did a brilliant job at showing Neil’s personal life leading up to the mission so we had a chance to see who he was at home and how he carries himself and deals with the things he saw. And then his execution of the moon landing is one of the most dazzling sequences I’ve seen in any film it’s purely stunning to watch. Damien was able to balance out the drama and personal stuff of Neil and also give outstanding visual Spectacle of space without one outweighing the other. Damien delivers the greatest Space film I’ve seen on film he showed the highs and lows of space and Neil’s journey personally and emotionally throughout the film perfectly that is captured by Damien giving another solid directed film. Overall Damien gives you an experience that will leave you amazed and speechless incredible work Damien.

The Lighting : The lighting in this film is fantastic! The look of the film felt very grained and of its time which I loved. It had this yellow brownish look to it that felt like it was a actual film from the 69’s and really makes it feel as authentic as possible giving off great lighting that helped express the scenes throughout tremendous colour painted onscreen.

The Cinematography : The camerawork in this film is outstanding! The scenes shot in space gave me goosebumps it’s ability to showcase each side and capture everything in the frame was marvellous. It shakes as if your in the ship with them and really gives an immersive experience while also giving angles and looks at space in a way  you haven’t seen captured so on film before that is truly breathtaking. It’s gorgeously shot and one of the best shot films I’ve seen all year really expressing the film in amazing ways through the lens.

The Score : The Score in this film is beautifully composed! The music was very soft and felt very gentle in smaller moments and then could go very loud and bombastic and it really captures every scene perfectly through its music. It also could make you feel such emotion without words spoken onscreen and just the visual aspect and the music really just giving an experience and the music is a huge reason why I loved this film so much was it’s beautiful melodies and how it was used throughout the film a very well composed score.
