Movie Review : The Sisters Brothers
The Sisters Brothers
This film is a old fashioned gun slinging western flick that is so much damn fun. It’s a slow burn for sure so don’t walk into this film anticipating anything like the Unforgiven. Its definitely not what I thought it would be but doesn’t mean it was bad just surprised by the direction the film takes. This film has a star studded cast but it’s John C. Riley who is the standout and delivers a top notch performance.
First off, This film starts off as an old fashioned Western with a gold tint to the picture with beautiful scenic views of the sky and the two main leads on horseback and that’s a big thing I loved about this film was it’s ability to be a true Western that calls back to the John Wayne style of westerns that we don’t get nowadays. It’s definitely something to appreciate the production value and the sheer passion of completing immersing the audience into the time the film is set in and making it as authentic as possible. So the style the film went for was incredibly well executed and instead of making the western backdrop a stereotype it makes it what it was of the time and beautifully delivers on the environment and backdrop the story is set in.
Secondly, This film has a A list cast from Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Riz Ahmed and John C. Reilly it's a brilliant cast with terrific performances all around. But it's John who's the standout amoung the rest delivering a career turning performance that will amaze you. What's so great about the actors in the film is theirs no actor who's phoning in their performance each actor contributes to the picture in a great way all of them give solid work but John's performance is on a whole other level.
Lastly, This film is a beautifully captures the old fashioned Western films that we haven't had in a very long time and was a so much fun to see once again with a solid cast and great performances with drama, suspense, violence and heart this film really is a fun popcorn flick to check out as its been overlooked by many this year but trust me you'll be glad you checked this one out I highly recommend this film.
Rated R : violence including disturbing images language and some sexual content
This film revolves around two brothers who are paid killers who seek out people who's wronged others and on one assignment they go to track a man down and they encounter and witness more then they thought they would
John C. Reilly : John delivers one of his finest performances in years! Reilly has proven that he can tackle drama as he did in the film Chicago which even earned him a Oscar nomination for his splendid work in that film. But I don't understand why he doesn't choose to do more serious material films as he's a damn fine actor and can do both comedy and Drama greatly. This film shows him knock it out of the park with his first dramatic performance in a long time and damn is it good. He plays the older brother and is the serious one out of the two sure his other brother has serious moments but for the most of it he's quite the comedic one and John is the serious one which I loved as its usually the other way around. Here he has the stress and weight on his shoulders that he has no one to love and always has to look after his brother who's taken up his fathers habits of being a drunk and it really effects him and the way John conveys all of that onscreen is amazing. He delivers his dialogue with such a sadness in his voice and serious tone as he truly means it and damn dose he have an emotional depth to the character and to his performance that just amazes you. He delves deep into this character and goes places emotionally we haven't seen him explore before showcasing a multilayered performance. Theirs moment when he can give a sly and dry comment that genuinely dose come off funny but doesn't seem out of place for his character and then next he could shed a tear and see in his eyes the vulnerability that seems so raw and real. John just soars with this film giving a knockout performance showing that he's a force to be reckoned with when it comes with serious driven roles as he outshines every actor in this film giving a scene stealing performance. John C gives a outstanding performance that truly is one of his best of his career!
Jacques Audiard : Jacques gives dominating direction here that is truly special! This filmmaker I have not heard of prior to seeing this film but who's work I'd definitely check out and keep an eye out for his future projects after seeing what he did here he's an amazing director. This man was able to callback the old kind of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood type westerns that weren't a stereotype or played for laughs but had a real authentic feel to it and that's what he dose here and it's marvellous he captures fantastic chemistry from his two main leads and great supporting work from the rest of the cast. He has such a interesting style of direction he doesn't go the usual route with draws, saloons and all the usual tropes you see in a western but goes in a different direction and makes it truly unique and something different while keeping the magical Western feel to the picture. He has moments of violence but doesn't just place it their he has reasoning for every act of violence in the film it just isn't their for shock factor but has a reason. He also has so much heart into the film by getting you to invest In the two main leads which have some comedic moments between the two but also some emotional moments as well and I loved that. Overall he recaptures the magic of the western genre while bringing it in a new direction and not relying on past tropes but creating a way to make it different and fresh an overall fantastically directed film.
