Movie Review : Bad Times At The El Royale

Bad Times At The El Royale
This film is a stylish sleek thriller with terrific performances. Drew Goddard crafts a tightly written screenplay with fully fleshed out characters and twists with  shocking revels throughout that don’t feel like you can see how this is going to turn out. He builds up what he wants you to think the ending is going to be then totally give you a shocking revel out of left corner and I loved that element of surprise he crafts through this film.

First off, This film gives a lot of similar styles to Hotel Artemis another film that came out this year but that was a Hotel this is a Motel and what’s different between the two is their execution of styles Hotel Artemis was a cool concept that sadly was more style then substance where for Bad Times At The El Royale it balances out the style and story perfectly. The film has been getting compared to Tarantino’s filmmaking styles and I don’t really agree as his style of filmmaking yes has fully fleshed our characters and rich dialogue but just because it’s a smart stylish thriller doesn’t make it a Tarantino like film because it’s not their totally style wise and tonally different filmmakers.
This film also is incredibly smart at using a single location and really using it to its advantage and being able to create fantastic tension and action in one place the entire film which is not easy at all to keep an audience entertained by using the same place the entire film but if done right it can be fantastically done and Drew really delivers.

Secondly, This film has a massive cast from Dakota Johnson, John Hamm, Jeff Bridges and Chris Hemsworth. Each actor never falls into the background and each actor and their character contribute great lengths to the film but it’s Chris Hemsworth who steals the show for me he comes in in the final act of the film and totally dominates the screen with a performance unlike anything he’s done before. All actors involved really got into their characters and gave fantastic touches to their roles to really make them unique and feel lived in.

Lastly, This film made me laugh, shocked and an overall fun time watching this thriller with so many well done twists and likeable characters thanks to Drew Goddard who directs this film masterfully and captures and delivers an old fashioned like thriller with terrific performances from its entire cast an overall fun experience that you’ll want to have more the once I highly recommend everyone check this film out.

Rated R : Violence throughout, and language

This film centres on a Hotel called the El Royale that is divided between California and Nevada and very colourful characters come to check in and each one of them even though strangers to one another all cross each other’s path in ways they didn’t expect

Chris Hemsworth : Hemsworth delivers a scene stealing performance that is so captivating. What’s so interesting is Hemsworth isn’t in the film that much but shows up in the final act of the film and when he shows up he is incredible and you can’t take your eyes off of him. He plays this Charles Manson like character in the way that he can manipulate others with his beliefs and personality that they find charming but Under the surface is very terrifying. He delivers his dialogue in such a sparkling way that he just brings the words to life and gives it such style to it and Chris walks this fine line of unpredictably where you don’t know at any moment if he’s going to laugh or shoot someone’s head off and his execution of it was terrifyingly brilliant showing incredible amounts of emotion that he switches back and forth from charming to cold stones serious and then can be dangerously charming the next. Chris just brings such charisma to the character that worked and gives one of his most spine chilling and strong performances in a while that left me amazed. And you can tell he’s having such fun with the part he’s playing onscreen and really takes it on and gives the audience a performance we haven’t seen him do  before and channel emotions that we haven’t seen him explore before and he’s so incredible in this film an overall Scene stealing performance given by Hemsworth.

Jeff Bridges : Jeff gives a very complex performance. Bridges plays a priest who comes to the El Royale for more then just a stay and you really see him go through a interesting character arc throughout the film. He’s in majority of the film and he is able to get you to care for him but also he shows many faces and sides to him that make you question if he’s good or not and Bridges place that greatly where he makes you question his every move but can’t help fall for his character. He also creates a very emotional punch to the character that I didn’t expect and gives fantastic moments of genuine heartfelt and heartbreaking moments and it works because of Jeff’s solid work in this film. He delivers his lines with such believably and emotion in his lines that it he really speaks his dialogue in a way that feels so real and  showcases great depth giving one of the most complex performances I’ve seen him deliver in an  amazing way. He could could make me smirk at times and then just feel for him by the sheer look of sadness in his eyes Jeff is terrific in this film an overall marvellous performance by Jeff.

Drew Goddard : Drew showcases great talent behind the camera once again with a fantastically directed film here! This man impressed me with his work on his breakout work with Cabin In The Woods a few years ago and since then has been a filmmaker I have kept notice of because his filmmaking style is so intriguing and the way he approaches a film is so entertaining and he shows those talents once again here. He creates and captures a stylish, well fleshed out characters and great twists and turns that you won’t spot a mile away but are placed and executed greatly by Drew who really dose a splendid job here. He has tones of dark humour, violence, mystery and all of them blend together greatly on top of the fantastic performances he gets from his entire cast. He really pulls you in with this premise and gets you to become attached to each character but he layers the characters in ways so you never expect if they are who they say they are and just gives a really fun time when watching this film. It is the passion and heart he puts into it that makes it so much worth it cause you can tell that he never wants to bore the audience but always give them a new and different experience every time and this film shows he never has failed too and Drew you did a terrific job at directing this film and really kept the audience guessing up to very end of the film of how things were going to play out onscreen. Drew writes and directs masterfully giving once again another well crafted film.
