Movie Review : Unsane
This film is incredibly Gripping! Steven Soderbergh’s latest film is fantastic and chilling all the way through. His style of shooting this film completely on an iPhone was different and you can tell from the shots it’s not your average cinematography but I thought it was something different and I liked his approach to it. As well the film packs great performances from the lead performance from Claire Foy to Supporting performances from Joshua Lenard all giving great work here.
The film is an enjoyable film it really creates a uneasy feeling throughout the film which you are supposed to feel and this sense of paranoia going on around and the way it was done was solid and the film really has genuinely shocking moments but I wouldn’t label this film a horror. This film is more of a psychological thriller and that’s another reason why I watched it was due to the fact Steven did a film a few years back with a similar subject matter called Side Effects which I absolutely loved and that also was a thriller and he can tackle those well which he dose again here greatly.
Their are some moments where I would of liked to of seen the supporting cast get more time especially Juno Temple I thought her character was interesting but we never really got to see a character arc from her so that would be really the only flaw I saw in the film besides that it was a chilling well acted and enjoyable film I would definitely recommend.
Rated R : disturbing behaviour, violence language and sexual references
When a woman gets wrongly submitted into a mental hospital she is filled with terror and paranoia knowing she is sane but when her past comes back to haunt her in not ways she intended is she really sane or is she insane?
Claire Foy : Claire is captivating! Her work is outstanding I knew she would be good in this as she’s proven she is a force to be reckoned with from great work on the small screen from the Crown which has earned her award recognition for her great ability as an actor. This film only shows you again how she can really dominate the screen with her truly fantastic acting chops. From the moment she appears onscreen she just is one hundred and ten percent committed to the role and really gives her best and it truly shows. She plays a woman who is unhappy at her work and gets wrongly put into a mental institution and the way she was able to play this character was amazing. She doesn’t play it one note and just be scared the whole time she shows a whole range of emotions that make you care about her character and be entertained by her performance at hand. She has moments where she truly is frightened and is terrified to the bone and it isn’t in a way that’s cheesy or over the top acting but she genuinely looked scared and she sold you on her great emotional range and then she could totally switch it up and be really intense and screaming and in the persons face delivering dialogue that she just gives perfectly. She is the main reason this film is enjoyable sure the plot and other performances are great but it’s her performance that really steals the show and Foy brings great work to the screen once again with another great performance. Showing a layered and truly sparkling performance that steals the show.
Joshua Lenard : This Guy is bone chilling! Joshua as many people know is from the Blare Witch Project film and has been seen in multiple horror related projects but the role he plays here is something I haven’t seen from him before. He plays this stalker and sure their have been so many of those in horror or any film really so what did he bring that was so different I’ll tell you. He had a way of showing so much from his eyes and his facial movements it comes off as unsettling and creepy which is exactly what he is going for. As well he creates this sense of you don’t know if he’ll go off the Handel and just attack someone so your always on edge and his ability to capture that in his performance is great. Their is a scene towards the end with him and Foy and the multiple emotional transitions he makes in that scene alone was amazing to watch she would switch her emotional change and then he would it was gripping to watch. He doesn’t play this stalker one note but really brings something different to it that is unsettling and shows so much more emotion then I thought he would and I love when a performance catches me off guard like that. His ability to just smile and the audience knowing who he is and then he just creates this approach to the role that is captivating but also eerie. Overall Joshua delivers a fantastic supporting turn here.
Steven Soderbergh : Steven delivers another great film once again! This man can approach any genre and takes it head one and in some way always works and I love that about him he tackles so many different issues in films and so many genres and try’s to throw his style on it and it ends up being so damn enjoyable and refreshing which is what he showcases here. Steven captures paranoia and issues of stalking incredibly well in his film and I’ll explain. In the film it plays like a pressure cooker where you see things get progressively worse and it’s only time until it blows and I loved his approach to the film in the way he was able to make you scared and feel on edge without having to resort to jump scares or the cheap shot we get in most horror/thrillers. Instead he lets it build up and really creates this situation that could actually happen and takes that and then runs with it and creates a compelling narrative with great turns in the plot along with great performances woven through it as well. His style you can’t duplicate he dose films in a way that even if the film may not be what you expected he always seems to surprise you and leaves you talking about it about its over. I loved the choice he had to shooting this on an iPhone and really show the film up close and have this tension build up and showcase greatly through the camera. As well he leaves you entertained by chilling twists you don’t see coming and fantastic acting from its cast. He once again tackles the thriller genre with great style while delivering a great film with his spin on the genre it just worked overall great work from Steven once again.
The Score : The Score here felt like the composers of Trent Razor and Atticus Ross it had this techno sound to it that worked. It had this high pitch sound and multiple beats playing that just fit the tone and really knew how to capture the sense of that scene through great composed music. Overall a great score piece to look out for.
