Movie Review : Solo : A Star Wars Story
I have a bad feeling about this film! And yes I quoted Solo himself but in all seriousness this film is the sort of movie that you will like or hate theirs no in between and I’ll say this I thought it had strong parts but also weaker counterparts that overall was what I was expecting the film to be an adventurous fun time.
First off, I have to give credit to Alden Ehrenreich for his portrayal of the scruffy looking Han Solo in this film. He had so much hate and negativity clouding the casting choice of him and I will say I was also a bit hesitate when watching the trailers to see if he could pull it off and he dose do a pretty good job in the film and I think despite all the incredible pressures he had he brings justice to this loved character. As well the film dose a great job at just giving the audience a fun time and showing the little things that made Han Solo who he is from the little Easter eggs hidden in the film which was great. As well as the fun action and great chemistry from the cast. Also Donald Glover as Lando was perfect casting and he did a pitch perfect portrayal of the character bringing such style to it.
Secondly, Ron Howard pulls off a film that had so many production problems and still was able to deliver a enjoyable film giving service to the fans while also throwing his style onto it that makes it different then other Star Wars films that we’ve seen before.
Now for the weaker parts, this film drags on for longer then it should clocking in at 2h and 15m which could of been trimmed to 1h and 45 easily as their was some scenes that just weren’t necessary and were just filler. The beginning stats off with a bang and by the second act it falls apart and dose slow the pace down then the final act is somewhat enjoyable but not at all memorable. The film also suffers from referencing something to the other films every other second as it’s using it as a crutch to satisfy fans that is both a blessing and a curse because yes it is nice but then doing it every single time gets annoying. Then lastly the characters in the film the new ones didn’t stand out and I didn’t care for them or will remember them after the film finishes they were hollow and forgettable.
This film is going to be incredibly divisive and I can see why it’s an enjoyable space adventure showing how Solo becomes who we grow to love but not without its share of flaws Solo is a mixed bag that untimely left me satisfied enough to enjoy it.
Rated PG - 13 : for sequences of sci-fi action/violence
This film centres around Han Solo long before he joined forces with Luke and shows how he became the fastest pilot in the galaxy.
Alden Ehrenreich : Alden dose a bang up job as the title character! Alden like I said earlier received so much Backlash over being cast in the film because when the teaser for this film dropped people lost their freaking minds and we’re all saying he doesn’t look like Harrison, he doesn’t talk like Harrison and he doesn’t have the swagger of Harrison. I was one of the few that was like geez people he’s an actor obviously he won’t be able to match the standards of Harrison’s portrayal of Solo but you can say the same for Zackery’s portrayal of Spock his portrayal no matter how good will never match Lenard Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock. So just accept the actor and let him have his spin on the character and see what happens which is what I did and what I saw was a great performance here. He brought great humour to the character and great style without making it a impression of Ford he brought his own take to it which I loved. His ability to just have fun with the character and really show some depth of him we haven’t seen explored before was fun to watch and really see the many layers of the character. He has moments of sorrow moments of triumph and moments that leave you grinning. Alden really shines in this film showing great emotional range great charisma and charm while showing the fun cocky Solo we know and love in his performance when he speaks you really feel it and believe it. His approach to Han was great he plays him as a very emotional guy but who uses his humour to hide his feelings and he shows that perfectly onscreen. Overall Alden shines in the film and really brings a great spin to the character having great fun with it while delivering a solid performance.
Donald Glover : Glover delivers a electric performance as Lando. When I first heard of the casting of the guy who was going to play Lando and after seeing the first images of Glover as Lando I was excited and boy dose he deliver. Glover has the best performance of the film nearly stealing every scene of the film bringing the swagger and smooth charm that Lando is known for. But at the same time showing his more emotional side and I love how Donald was able to explore that but also be charming all at once he walks that line greatly. He looked like Lando and his delivery to every line just crackled in greatness. This is one of the few times where the Supporting character outshines the main character. The moment he is onscreen you can’t take your eyes off of him he just has this electric energy to his performance that is great. He is so Layered and Glover explores all of it with great style and really shows his range as an actor and pulls off this character greatly. Overall a terrific performance from Glover.
Ron Howard : Howard pulls it off and I give him so much credit for it. For a director to come onto a film halfway through filming and then redo all of it while giving it your own spin on it but at the same time still deliver for the fans a true Star Wars film that’s a lot of pressure and Howard delivers on all fronts. He was able to sparkle the screen with great visuals, a great cast and enjoyable popcorn flick. He definitely has his style on this film bringing more emotional depth to it but also it’s fair share of humour and Easter eggs for the fans to look out for. While also showing something new that fans haven’t seen before. He did a great job at delivering so much and keeping all the balls in the air without one falling which was so easy to do but he pulls it off. Overall Howard brings great life to the franchise with his great style to the film giving maybe not the perfect solo film but an enjoyable one great job Howard.
