Movie Review : The Shape Of Water

The Shape Of Water
This film had me with mixed feelings but an overall joy to see! This film has been receiving the label as the best of the year so I had to see it and see if it lived up to the hype. To be honest it did and didn’t and I’ll explain.

First off this film would not be what it is without the magnificent performance by Sally Hawkins and Guillermo Del Toro’s harrowing work on this film. It’s a incredibly great looking film that’s visually gorgeous packed with great performances

But also has its fair amount of flaws too. The flaws this film shows is first off the pacing felt a bit slow and the plot was to narrow and never got me invested in a lot of the characters like I cared for them but not to the point I’m going to remember them unlike some other characters I’ve seen. This film overall has a terrific heart and it’s a great watch I highly recommend people check out. The shape of water succeeds and falls short at parts but ultimately delivers a fun, original film.

Rated R : language, some bloody images, sexual content and graphic nudity

This film takes place in the 60's when a woman finds a partner but not in the normal way but their love transcends everything.

Sally Hawkins : Hawkins delivers a truly amazing performance showcased in this film! Sally is the driving force pulling this film and dose a damn good job in it giving one of her best onscreen performances ever with this film. She plays a woman who is a mute and first off playing someone who is mute is difficult and to be able to pull it off and keep the audience intrigued is difficult because their is no dialogue exchanging between the actors it’s just emotion and she really uses that brilliantly throughout this film. Even though she never utters a word she was so explosive onscreen with her great lengths of emotion giving some of the most heartbreaking and tear jerking moments from her great emotional depth and layers brought to this character and performance. Hawkins commits to the frame one hundred and ten percent giving her absolute all and just getting us so invested in this character due to what she’s doing onscreen so greatly. She was mesmerizing to watch giving an emotional captivating performance that just explodes in brilliance overall amazing work from Hawkins once again.

Guillermo Del Toro : Guillermo has truly done an astonishing job at bringing another original gripping tale once again to the big screen. He’s written and exacted such great pieces of sheer originality throughout his career that’s stood out among the rest and it’s shown here once again. In this film he not only intrigued the audience but brought a fresh take and original idea to the table again that just was emotional, romantic and heartbreaking wrapped into one. He captures the frame of passionate love and the tragedy as well giving an even keel to both. At the same time really Immersing the audience with brilliant visuals and great performances from his cast. Only Del Toro could of thought of something like this and that’s why I love his style it’s unlike anything else. He brings his style to it and gives tremendous moments of triumph, heartache and friendship captured beautifully due to the great direction overall Del Toro delivers once again.

The Score : The music in this film is gorgeous to hear! The melodies and sounds woven through this film is so gentle like a whisper and it makes you feel it gets into your bones and explodes in great emotion. The music fit the moments perfectly giving the beats to the right moment of emotion it is phenomenal I loved it.
