Movie Review : Split

Split
M. Night is back with this incredible thriller that is Split! M Night. Is a great director but has unfortunately had some major duds in his career no doubt what he dose with this film shows the audience he is still a talented director behind the lens. The film is packed with a fantastic score, great camerawork and a outstanding performance by James McAvoy this film is a great performance film and a great thriller in general everyone should check this film out is a fantastic piece of film.

This film tells the story of three girls who get kidnapped from a man who suffers from multiple personality disorder and has 23 different personalities and the 24th one is going to be released

Rated PG - 13 : for disturbing thematic content and behavior, violence and some language

James McAvoy : James delivers a tour de force performance with his incredible work in this film! James is known for his role as Professor X in the X-men first class franchise and has done some small dramatic films like filth. But we haven't really seen him excel in dramatic work or at least I haven't and what he dose with this film blew me away. The last time i saw in a film where someone did an amazing job at portraying multiple personality disorder was in Hitchcock's classic Psycho played by the incredible Anthony Perkins. Now portraying that illness onscreen is incredibly difficult to do but to do 24 personalities is a huge task to take on as an actor. And the way James pulled it off onscreen was genius truly. He plays a nine year old boy, a woman named Patricia and Dennis another guy just to name a few of them. And the way he was able to breath such life and authenticity to the characters was amazing. You felt like he was those personalities and that he knew them inside and out. He is purely electric onscreen in this film you cannot take your eyes off his performance he's truly fantastic in this film. Since he plays so many characters it also showcases his layers of emotions through these different characters so not only did we get to see him bring these characters to the full front onscreen but also show us his incredible range emotionally as an actor. He was completely their onscreen fully committed to each scene and character he was showing. James is one of the most I think underrated actors working today next Tom Hardy truly he is incredible in this film and if it was released earlier he would of got more award buzz surrounding his performance maybe next year he could get a nomination at the Oscars for his work in this film. Overall James Delivers an incredible performance that is one of the best performances I have seen all year.

Anya Taylor - Joy : This actress is incredible! Anya is an actress who I have seen no previous work prio to seeing this film after seeing her in this I will for sure check out her future projects because she's amazing in this film. She gives such a emotional performance and mostly through her facial expressions. In the film for the first half she isn't talkative but we see glimpses of her past and her broken past so we understand why she's quiet. She did it so well giving such great depth to her without even needing to speak. When you can give a great performance without much dialogue that's great work. She was so entertaining in the film going to toe to toe with James the two of them when they shared the screen together was fantastic. It was great to see so many layers to her character and so many emotions that Anya explored with the character it was really great to watch. Overall a entertaining performance that shouldn't go unnoticed.

M. Night Shyamalan : M. Night is back! Like I said earlier in my review Night is still a good director but has had some unfortunate duds in his career but he is back with his tremendous work in this film. What he brought to the film was well fleshed out character storys, great performances from the cast and a very well written story. Not to forget the powerhouse performance he got from James in the film was amazing. He was able to create such tension in the scenes of the film without having to make it obvious he would take a simple scene and slowly increase the tension which I loved .  He also packed the film with many layers of storytelling and surprises that you don't see coming. I have one complaint though which is the pacing of the film could of gone a little faster it did feel slow at times but besides that M Night has done a incredible job with his fabulous skills directing and writing this film.

The Cinematography: Their are a few shots worth mentioning! The scene in which James is on a bus I won't give anything away I thought it really was well angled and captured well onscreen which leads me to my second shot worth mentioning. The shots of the tunnels were incredibly well done showing the scope of the atmosphere in the film I loved it greatly done.

The Score : I loved the music for this film but was kind of a give away! The music is fantastic in this film giving the audience an eerie feel to the picture and tone which I love to see. But it also I think when a scene would go a way you didn't expect the music had given away by its shift in tone so you expect it now instead of being surprised besides that it was well composed.
