Movie Review : Nocturnal Animals
Nocturnal Animals
This film is by far one of the best films I've seen all year! Not only is this film entertaining from start to finish but the performances in the film are outstanding. Great work coming from Aaron Taylor - Johnson, Michael Shannon and Jake Gyllenhaal. Also the camerawork was fantastic in the film. This film is dark, nail biting and a well told story told through the eyes of Tom Ford a film that will stay with you long after seeing it this is a film not to miss.
Susan Morrow an art gallery owner receives a book written by her ex - husband and he dedicated to her as the book tells stories of brutal violence and choices that make her rethink her choices she's made and if they were the right ones or were they wrong?
Rated R : Violence, menace, graphic nudity and language
Jake Gyllenhaal : Jake delivers a Powerhouse performance in this film that is truly incredible. Jake knocks it out of the park with his work in this film with what he dose with the character and the amount of emotion he brought to the screen. In the film he plays a man named Tony who 's world is torn when a terrible tragedy occurs one night and the sheer horror and intensity Jake was able to bring to that character and to his performance was amazing. Jake is terrific throughout the whole film but their is one scene in specific that gave me chills. The look in his eyes were pure red and the sheer intensity he had in his voice was so genuine it felt so real like he really was his character and you can see it in his performance he is one hundred percent committed to his character he's playing. Jake has delivered great work again and again with films of his such as Prisoners which I think his work in that film was really underrated. As well as his work in Nightcrawler and Zodiac all great performances but his work in this film Nocturnal Animals I think is the best performance of his career. I was invested in his character I cared about him and his motives every scene he's in he steals with his great work in this film he's truly magnificent. He shows all these layers of emotion from sad to happy and then incredible amounts of anger and what they all have in common is every emotion he expresses onscreen I believe him he feels all of it. I can just see it in his performance he's just so captivating with the transitions he made through his emotional depth with his character he's truly fantastic in this film overall Jake delivers the best performance of his career and one of the best performances of the year.
Michael Shannon : Shannon is truly fantastic in this film! Michael has shown us he can flex his dramatic muscles with films like 99 Homes and the iceman. So we know he can do dramatic films but the work he gives In this film he shows on another medium. In the film he plays an Officer named Bobby and he disappears he truly becomes his character onscreen and you forget your watching Shannon which is amazing. He's great in the film but their is one scene in particular which I couldn't take my eyes off him in which was when he is interrogating someone. He is fully committed from the way he talks to the way he moves he is his character. As well not only dose he do a great performance in the film but also gets the audience to care for his character and be invested in his motives and even if their dark choices you understand why he dose what he dose. Shannon gives one of the best supporting performances I've seen all year and the best performance he's ever given on film. His emotional range to when he hears what happened to Jake's character the rage and anger that fills his soul and the look in his eyes is so real and genuine its outstanding. Overall Shannon delivers a scene stealing performance that is amazing.
Aaron Taylor - Johnson : Aaron delivers the best performance of his career with his work in this film. Aaron is well known for his work in the dark comedy Kick-Ass and we have seen his comedic chops and his action abilities in Godzilla but we haven't had a chance to see him really shine in a dramatic film. This was the first time I've seen him in a dramatic film and oh my god he's brilliant in this film. Truly magnificent in this film he plays this character named Ray who is creepy as hell and Aaron was amazing at bringing this character to life onscreen but he's truly terrifying in this film. I've never seen Aaron play a dark character before and to see him channel that in the film is incredible he's chilling in this role from how he walks to the way he laughs he's completely transformed into this character and you forget your watching Aaron. The emotional depth he had with his character was genius. He is this psychotic guy with dark intentions but then can switch to a person who is nice and quiet and the way Aaron can just turn those two emotions so quickly is very impressive and make them both feel so real is amazing. When he spoke his dialogue I believed his character meant what he was saying so he felt believable onscreen. Even tho he's the meanest character and most dark when he's not onscreen you miss him because he just brings this screen presence that is electric to watch and when he's onscreen he dominates the frame with his performance. Overall Aaron gives the best performance of his career.
Tom Ford : Tom is a mastermind behind the camera! I haven't seen his work before I know he did the film a single man in 2009. So I haven't seen how he can direct a film before. Oh my god his direction in this film is spectacular I will for sure check out his past work now and can't wait to see what he dose next. In this film he dose what not many filmmakers today can do he intertwines 3 stories Amy Adams point of view then you have the book she's reading and those characters then you have the relationship that Adams character had with her ex - husband. Then he mashes it all together and he is able to juggle all of that and executes it beautifully onscreen with his ability to tell a intriguing story that you can't take your eyes off of. As well he surrounds the film with fantastic characters that he gets you to care for and amazing performances from his cast it all fell into place beautifully the way he crafted this film. He did a great job with the film and is probably the best directed film I've seen all year his direction in this is genius. Overall Tom shows once again he is a talented director that people should sit up and take notice.
The Lighting : The colours in this film was very well expressed and used. Since the film tells 3 stories the lighting technicians switched the tones for all three of the stories and made it look so gorgeous onscreen. It would be very grey for Amy Adams character then gold and a kind of dirty feel for Jake's character then brighter for the scenes of Adams and Jakes character in the past. The way they executed that was fantastic. It got me to feel the right emotions at the right time due to the lighting and music. It also made the frame pop out at the scenery shots. It fit the tone of the film very well loved it great job guys.
The Cinematography : The camerawork in this is amazing! The way the cameraman was able to be so expressive through the way he shot the scenes made me feel so immersed in the film. Their are shots of just land and the sky which is beautiful landscape to look at. But they also had one particular shot I loved where it was like a birds eye view of the camera looking down nothing is their then you see Jake running and the way the captured it was amazing. It made me feel immersed in the film and also take notice of the great camerawork at hand. Overall outstanding cinematography film.
The Score : The music is so well composed it's magnificent! Like I said earlier the music and lighting made me feel the right emotions at the right time and the music was so well composed it made you feel more immersed in this film by the way the music flowed through the scenes. It could be very calm and hardly notice it then go very loud the music plays a huge character to how it makes the audience feel and impact them as they react to the scenes in the film. It did a very good job at getting me emotional the use of the right sounds made me feel the feelings that the characters felt and get so wrapped up in this great story. Overall the music is incredibly well composed in this film loved it.
