Movie Review : All The Way
All The Way
This film is truly one of the best films of the year! The stellar performances from Bryan Cranston, Melissa Leo and Anthony Mackie along with Jay Roach's fantastic direction on this film makes this film one not to miss.
This film tells the story of when Lyndon B. Johnson became president and the chaos he had to deal with after JFK was killed and the responsibility LBJ had to carry forth the civil rights act into law and how the political war went on for it
Rated R : violence, language, sexual references
Bryan Cranston : Bryan delivers his finest performance of his film career! I regard his finest work in Breaking Bad but since that was TV and this is film I think this is his best performance of his career in film. He's given us great work in films such as Trumbo, the infiltrator and Drive but I think he performs on another medium we have never seen before which he didn't reach with his other film roles. Not saying his other roles aren't as good their fantastic his other performances he's given on film but I haven't seen him so transformed in a film like he is in this film that's why I am regarding it as his best work on film to date. He plays LBJ and Carry's this weight of stress on his shoulders of being a good president and making the right choices and getting the civil rights act into law. The way Cranston delivered that onscreen was phenomenal he got under the skin of LBJ he truly was his character. The makeup on him was outstanding he was unrecognizable he looked like LBJ and acted so well as him you forget it's Bryan because that's how good he is he got so immersed in this role it's spectacular to watch. From the way he talks to the way he moves all of it is on point even the accent LBJ had Cranston delivered perfectly. The sheer emotion he gives is amazing. When he talks the anger and stress in his voice is so empowering it feels so genuine and real their is not one false not in Bryan's performance. He steals the show in this film every frame he's in you can't take your eyes off of him he's absolutely electric in this film delivering his finest performance of his film career and one of the finest performances of the year!
Anthony Mackie : Mackie is superb as Martian Luther King Jr! Anthony hasn't done a handful of dramatic films the only film he's really shown his serious side was in the outstanding Oscar winning film the hurt locker. Besides that we haven't really seen him dive into the dramatic genre much. But he shows his incredible skills of dramatic acting in this fantastic film. He plays not only a real person but one of the most influential people of all time Martian Luther king Jr. That's a hard tight rope to walk because you have to give the character justice by doing him as accurate as possible while giving the audience a gripping performance. And that he dose with his great performance in this film. The look in his eyes when he talks to LBJ about doing what's right I believed him Mackie spoke with authority in the tone of voice and it was so great to watch him deliver such a strong dramatic performance that we really haven't seen from him before which was great. He also explored a different side of emotion we haven't seen before the sheer anger and stress very much like LBJ you see in Mackie's layers of emotion and he delivers it onscreen so well. I loved seeing Mackie in a serious dramatic role like this and hope he dose more he really is strong in the dramatic genre. Overall Mackie delivers a fantastic supporting performance that shouldn't go unnoticed.
Jay Roach : Jay Roach proves again he is a visionary director! Jay directed Trumbo one of my favourite films of last year which was a film that also had Bryan and when I heard he was directing this film and collaborating with Cranston again I was excited because the two of them work really well onscreen. Jay was able to capture the time period and the style of the past very well making the time feel very authentic and real which made me as a viewer feel more in the world of the story that was being told. He also got stellar performances from his cast while keeping the audience intrigued by telling such a heavy topic. Jay evacuates real life story's very well and he proves himself again with his great direction on this film loved it great job Jay.
The Lighting : The tones were very important in the film and it was done incredibly well. The tones used in the film was very grey and it stayed that way throughout the film and by not changing it up and only adding small amounts of colour it really made the frame pop. I loved how they did a different approach to the tones used in the film it worked really well loved it great job guys.
The Cinematography: The shots they used when LBJ was making his speeches and the multiple cuts and angles they used to make you feel like you were front row hearing this was great. Got me in the moment of the film and wrapped up in the story The camerawork in this film was great good job guys.
The Score : The composed music in this film I enjoyed! It felt very slow and bust slowly and I liked that it was beautiful to the ears the use of instruments and sound in the film was very well done.
