Movie Review : Spider-Man : Far From Home

Spider-Man : Far From Home
This is an adrenaline high joy ride with everyone’s favourite web slinger! This is a fantastic sequel to Homecoming but also connects directly from Endgame. The film is such a great light hearted fun adventure after the heavy ending of Endgame this is a nice light and fun filled adventure with Spider-Man to have. It still pulls the emotional punches but is incredible fun to be had. I actually think In a lot of ways it is better then homecoming which I didn’t think would be possible but it does in great style.

Firstly, This film is a heartfelt love letter to Tony Stark. This film is full of references and callbacks to the billionaire playboy as he’s moved on in the universe now their is some grieving which I respect that they don’t just move on to the next film like nothing happened they actually pay respect to the ones that died to save their loved ones and are noticed in this film. Tony is most prominently shown through drawings, discussions and little props he had that has been passed on to Peter to take on the torch as the next Iron Man and its a side plot that easily could of been to soon to bring onto the franchise but it’s written and done with such respect that it feels so satisfying and makes you quiet emotional as well. So their ability to go out of their way to make this as much as Tony’s film as it is for Peters I loved that so much it was a great tribute for a great character.

Secondly, This film goes into deep emotional layers I didn’t see coming at all. Tom Holland shows quite a great depth to Peter this time around that hits incredibly hard emotionally that is so effective due to the film’s great tones that are explored through the film. The film as I mentioned is very much talking about the absence of Tony and it’s affected Peter very much and you see that powerfully through the film as he takes that responsibility on and really feels that pressure which is difficult for him. The film does a fantastic way at being able to balance the serious and more heavy moments and also the more comedic parts too. It was well balanced in the way that one never compromised the other and having this perfect even keel of tones through the film. It also does a terrific job at carrying the aftermath of Endgame and the emotional hardships that Peter is facing from that and how he is coping emotionally and mentally with it I felt that was touched upon incredibly well in the film that also was emotionally effective. This is probably the most emotionally deep film since Spider-Man 2 that I have seen and I didn’t expect it to go so deep into the Emotion so much but they were able to pull it off and really make it work with the light hearted feel that they set the film out to be as well. It juggles two acts at once and works tremendously well.

The Approach to the antagonist was once again incredibly fleshed out and well done. It is no surprise that Mysterio is the villain of this film if you didn’t catch on from the many trailers or marketing I’ll be shocked. But they make him appear very sincere and kind towards Peter and has this very understanding look to Peter and I have read the comics and seen the show I know that  Mysterio is no hero so when he turns midway through the film it came as no surprise I don’t see this as a spoiler as it is heavily touched upon in all the marketing for this film. Now what I did love with how they approached the character was that he was an everyman a working man that was upset and wanted to strike back at the system and that is also the same approach they used for the Vulture in Homecoming. I find humanizing the villains to a certain extent is a good way at going about it because it brings more depth to them and makes you conflicted if you should root for them or not. So I loved that approach that he didn’t have any powers he just wanted to get back at the man and make them notice him it was a interesting take on the Villain that I found very entertaining and well acted by Jake Gyllenhaal who brings great charm and menace to the character that was compelling to watch throughout the entire film.

Lastly, This film is a great follow up to Homecoming while also being connected to Endgame and giving a great light hearted fun Marvel film with Spider-Man after the events of Endgame it is a fun film to have while also giving great emotional depths that are incredibly shown and touched upon in ways that I did not expect that is emotionally effective and satisfying. Stan Lee would be so proud of his web slinger in this film and I think he would of smiled all the way through it as I did it is a marvellous film with great fun and great heart Far From Home is a adrenaline ride from start to finish I recommended everyone go check this film out.

This film is a follow up to homecoming but also is right after the events of Endgame and Peter is grieving after Tony and has to take on the responsibility on being the next Iron Man while also going on a vacation with his school mates and trying to tell MJ his feelings about her while trying to save the world.

Rated PG - 13 : for sci-fi action violence, some language and brief suggestive comments

Tom Holland : Tom Holland gives his best outing so far as Spider-Man in this film! I know it sounds early to say that but he has now played the web slinger for his 5th time hard to believe right? Well I find Tom Holland in this film to be absolutely incredible as he brings layers to the character we haven’t seen him bring before which was a joy top watch. Here he shows a lot of emotional pain as he has been deeply affected after the loss of his mentor in many ways Tony Stark and he has to take on the overwhelming responsibility of taking his legacy on which the pressure amounts to him quite a bit which is a lot for him to take. At the same time he is trying to be a normal teenager and have fun but also knows the responsibility’s he has with these powers. And in the film he can be quite charming and very quippy with his lines and then the next he can be emotionally affected and raw as their are moments where he just can’t take it anymore and he is emotionally tested and put through the ringer in this film by his antagonist. Tom Really brings the emotional battle wounds from Endgame and make them come across in a very sincere and genuine way that is incredibly compelling to watch onscreen. He brings a very specific energy to the role that works so perfectly as he can be very charming  and comedic in when not trying to be which is fantastic as his comedic wit and timing is perfect but also he is able to give a great dose of Emotion as well that works so well in this film as he shows sides to him he has not shown before and also keep widening his character arc to show how he has evolved since we first saw him. At the same time he also can be a action hero when he needs to be a kick ass when needed So Tom Holland definitely steps his game up in this film and gives a terrific performance as the Web Slinger in this film with great depth and a fantastic amount of range that I hadn’t seen Tom explore with the character before.

Jake Gyllenhaal : Jake provides another brilliant performance! Here Jake has finally delved into the big blockbuster Hollywood scene as he has been very well known for doing very small arthouse indie films and he doesn’t really do mainstream films at all and if he does it is incredibly rare. So seeing him now being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a joy as he’s one of my favourite actors working today and he is so underrated with his many great performances over the years. Here he brings a very strong performance to the role of Mystery and does it in a very special and specific way. In the first half he is very charming and very mysterious not to be funny and then he makes quite the transition from likeable to unlikeable and Jake really brings this character to life through his incredible energy that is bursting through every minute of this film. He brings a very intense menacing approach to the role that works so well. As he as I mentioned before doesn’t have any powers he is just a guy and Jake really brings the desperate and also intimidating aspect of his character to the surface quite well in a great handful of scenes’s. He can be very calm and very wistful to Peter in one instant and then the very next have such rage and Anger In his voice and terror in his eyes and it is due to Jake’s willingness to commit to every bit of his character and to the performance. He truly brings his blood sweat and tears to this role and you can tell as he tries his hardest to make this Villain really stand out among the rest and he does due to the great performance at hand by Jake and also by the fantastic complexity of the Villain as well. Jake has moments that he is truly terrifying and he just channels those dark places in him and brings them to the surface and it is chilling to watch and every moment of this film when he was onscreen I couldn’t take my eyes off of his performance as he is so compelling to watch in this film as his character’s motives are relatable and very humanized but also he is so damn entertaining in this film. Overall Jake delivers a truly fantastic performance in this film.

John Watts : John again has struck lightning in the bottle! John directed the marvellous previous Spider-Man film for the MCU. John brings this very light hearted but emotionally satisfying look to the frame of these Spider-Man films that I love. He was able this time to bring the characters into new situations and a completely new environment without loosing the magic of what makes Spider-Man so entertaining. As this could of just been another teen flick as they do go on vacation but that is just the backdrop of the film their is so much that goes on in this film and he balances it out so beautifully. He makes this a direct follow up to both Endgame and homecoming which was incredibly done as he shows the aftermath of what Endgame has had on the world and especially on Peter’s emotional and mental state. I didn’t expect him to delve into that so deeply but he did and I was so glad he did as their are sides he shows of Peter we hadn’t seen before while also giving a new character an amazing character arc and really humanizing him and making him relatable and really making the audience feeling conflicted for how to feel about him. John was able to perfectly balance out the comedy drama and action as he knew when to let a joke play out and when to pull back and to let a smaller more intimate more emotional moment come into play and then he knew when to crank up the action to an 11 and make it so effective in its execution which he does amazingly well. John doesn’t lean on the previous film as a crutch but creates a totally new adventure while still staying connected to its predecessor and having great fun with this film and giving the audience a great time with great twist and turns throughout it all. John overall has crafted a satisfying sequel to Spider-Man that is fun on every level possible.
