Movie Review : Stuber

Stuber
This film is a stupid fun time to be had. I have very good praises for this film but also some flaws to point out as well. Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani are such fun to watch onscreen their chemistry comes across so naturally and so do the laughs but they shape together a enjoyable flick even if the script doesn’t hit all the marks it’s the two leads that make this film a blast to be had and a fun time at the theatre.

First off, The great advantage this film has is that it’s very self aware of its environment. I’ve said this countless times before when a film is self aware that what its premise is and that the action is cheesy and over the top. When the cast and crew recognize that then it’s fun because then their in on it they know it’s a stupid premise for a film and so they try to have as much fun as possible I love that. As they don’t take it so seriously and that’s also what makes the furious franchise a blast to watch is that their self aware of the cheesy and over the top narrative at hand and that’s what this film notices greatly. Dave and Kumail really chew up the scenery in every frame and have a ton of fun in the roles they have at first glance I didn’t know if their paring would work as their totally different kinds of personalities and actors and it surprisingly works really well. The film’s premise is very interesting but so so tropy. And that’s the benefit the film has its that it knows it falls into every action stereotype in the book and it knowingly does that and makes fun of those tropes as well which results in fantastic onscreen comedy. Theirs amazing moments of thrilling action that come out of comedy and its at times very graphic but played in a humorous sense that most of the times work. So the first great praise I give this film is its great sheer ability to not take itself seriously in any sense and just have unrelenting fun onscreen that makes it more fun.

Secondly, The chemistry and performances are everything that makes this film work so well. Dave and Kumail their paring remind me very much of Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan from Rush Hour as the two of them are polar opposites and in some way they jell in such a great comedic way that makes the film so much damn fun. Kumail has been doing comedy for years and had a fantastic breakout performance from the Big Sick a couple of years ago and has slowly been popping up more and more in the last few years which I’m so glad to see as he’s one of the funniest comedians out their right now. Then you have Dave Bautista who’s one of the big action stars that’s been making quiet the name for himself from the massively acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy films and on top of the fact we haven’t seen Dave do a film with a straight up comedic actor where the film calls for mostly comedy as Guardians his role as Drax yes it’s comedic but he has a tortured soul to him that requires some deep emotional baggage and in this film he brings that emotional aspect but he mostly doubles down on the comedy and just rips it across the screen and Kumail is able to match his brand of humour with his and really capture this wonderful mix of comedy and banter that makes for fantastic comedy from both actors so both contribute massively to the reason why this film works if their chemistry didn’t work the film would of just fallen apart but due to the strong comedic work from both of its actors it makes for a fantastic time to be had.

Lastly, This film is Uber fun and packs so much comedy and great pulsing action that the sheer onscreen comedic duo of Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani will have you laughing and having a fantastic time as it’s a fun popcorn summer flick that I would definitely watch again I recommend people go check this one out it’s one of the better comedy’s I’ve seen this year for sure.

Rated R : for violence and language throughout, some sexual references and brief graphic nudity

This film centres on a police officer who is set on catching the man that killed his partner and when he’s brought to the eye doctor and cannot see and finds a lead on the case he calls a Uber to bring him to the many places to catch this guy but the Uber Driver just wants his five star rating

Kumail Nanjiani : Kumail gives another freaking hilarious performance! Kumail is becoming one of my favourite comedians working today as he is such a delight to watch onscreen. He’s been bringing fantastic roles to the screen as he flexed his dramatic range in the Big Sick which was one of my favourites of that year and has been making more and more of an impact in the film industry with his fantastic charisma that comes across hilariously on film. He plays a Uber driver that just wants a five star rating and he is amazing in the film at showing his comedic strength as yes he willingly makes jokes but for the most part he’s playing the role very straight and comes across hilarious when he’s not trying to be funny at all. He has amazing timing with his humour as for 99% of it he’s non stop jokes and in any kind of film that can be very annoying very fast but due to Kumail’s amazing timing and knowing when to switch things up the comedy with him never got tiring as the jokes were always so effective. He brings the source material to life and gives it such energy as he’s able to be bring such great comedy and moments of genuine emotion to the surface in amazing fashion. As I mentioned he knows when to switch things up and he knows when a joke might drag on for to long as he does have fantastic genuine emotional moments that don’t feel sappy but truly effective in its delivery from him. As their are some very serious moments of emotion that Kumail brings that is terrifically executed onscreen and it’s all due to his amazing range as an actor and how he’s able to switch so many emotions in the snap of a finger and Kumail brings such layers to every performance and always commits 100 percent and it shows in his work as he is always the standout in every film he’s in and theirs a reason why. Here he brings like I mentioned the great comedy needed for the character but also a action star quality you don’t see coming and it’s actually amazingly well fleshed out and Kumail truly has fun with this role bringing the great emotion and then the dry wit and so much heart and he’s so much fun to watch onscreen he once again delivers another hilarious performance they will have you in tears of laughter.

Michael Dowse : Drowse gives a entertaining film with his good direction here. The filmmaker that amazed me with his film What If comes to the task of writing a action comedy and it’s not as good as his predecessors in terms of writing but in terms of quality it’s a damn fun ride. Michael brings a great amount of heart to this film that makes it work so well and it’s due to the performances from its two lead actors. The fun environment he crafts this film in is fantastic as he’s so self aware that what he’s making story wise is so over the top ridiculous and he knows it and is able to poke fun at it and the many tropes of the genre. That’s also what made it such fun is his ability to recognize it’s dumb and to have dumb fun with the material and he does and it works so well and Dave and Kumail bring such a fantastic onscreen duo with great comedy and also having great lengths of emotion that doesn’t feel cheesy or forced but truly natural and mixed the comedy and action in such a effective way it explodes onscreen in such a fun way that you are having fun with every frame of this film. He calls out tropes other films has done and it makes for such fun to be had as he makes probably one of the better comedy films I’ve seen this year it’s not his best directed film but it’s a damn good directed film that he’s crafted with great fun to be had.
