Movie Review : Men In Black : International
Men In Black : International
This is such a enjoyable film but with fair share of flaws as well. First off I want to say right off the bat that people need to stop comparing this to the past Men In Black films as this is a spinoff that is not connected to the original film. This is its own thing and if you are comparing it to the 1997 original you’ll be nitpicking and won’t be having fun just have fun with this film it is its own thing and I’m totally fine with a Men In Black adventure.
First off, Now that we have that settled this film was quiet a enjoyable film to watch it has great onscreen chemistry from Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson who work off one another onscreen so well with their great banter back and forth it also works due to the fact they worked on Thor 3 together. So we’ve seen their chemistry before this film just shows us once again what a dynamic duo they make onscreen. Then they also have a plot that doesn’t rehash the same plot from previous instalments but rather they really inject this film with a very different direction then what I excepted it had some great choices plot wise and some that could of been improved upon. But what worked for me though was it’s ability to fully try something different that this franchise has never attempted which was a breath of fresh air. On top of the intriguing different direction it takes it also has some really fantastic visuals shown throughout the entire film. I mean that from a production stand point but also a makeup standpoint too. It’s visually pleasing to look at as it has this really great look to the frame that engages your attention and then amazing makeup and prosthetic for the Aliens was greatly done. That’s all my positives I had with this film now here’s the negatives
Secondly, This film has a difficult time at trying to figure out who the main antagonist is. Without giving anything away theirs multiple antagonist in this film and their all shown through the film pretty well for the most part. Where the film suffers on that end is that it’s to crowded as it has to many villains on top of the fact they didn’t establish who they were or why their doing it. They didn’t get me attached to their motive or backstory as it wasn’t fleshed out enough as since theirs so many characters villain wise they don’t take time to probably establish them and then they just introduce them and move on to the next villain without really having a main antagonist which does make the film falter as it’s harder to find a straight narrative if theirs to many villains and if they stuck to one it would of been a lot better narrative and character wise as then we’d be more attached or intrigued by the antagonist motive and all of that so then we’d have the face off at the end that would pay off because you set up all the stuff before hand. Which they sadly didn’t and Instead we got a carousel villains that came and went without being at all memorable.
Then, you have the forced political commentary spread throughout the film. I have no problem with touching upon political themes or topics in a film. It’s difficult to achieve well because you have to do it in a way that’s subtle but not in a way that feels in your face hitting you over your head. Here it brings a lot of female empowerment which I am full support of but when it has to stop the film to pause and appreciate that “oh she’s a female and it shouldn’t be called Men in Black cause she’s a female” that’s not subtle in the slightest and if we want to have great woman empowerment we don’t need to make a deal she’s a woman why do they feel the need to point out that she’s a woman. Like theirs no problem she’s a woman Men In Black agent the political lines are thrown in their just for the sake of trying to contemporary and I don’t know why the writers felt the need to as it felt very forced and awkward which detracted the film in some parts due to this small theme that ran through the film. So the political themes were totally used in such a in your face way it wasn’t used smartly which it could of done but didn’t.
Then, My last negative flaw I had with the film was it was way to once handed on the comedy. Meaning the comedy was way to relied on as when I watch films especially Comedies they usually know when to take a breather and have a emotional moment and then resume the comedy because if it’s non stop comedy line after line it gets exhausting. As Theirs one moment I really enjoyed because it didn’t need to inject comedy for it to work and I wish their was more of that as every five seconds even the scenes that didn’t require a joke in it was used for comedic value. As it very clearly outweighed the other tones as the comedy was funny but when it’s every five seconds it gets tiring fast and this film sadly does that it wasn’t very self aware of when to stop the brakes and explore other themes or emotional moments in the film so that for sure is a glaring issue is the over amount of Comedy that should have been controlled a lot better.
Lastly, Men In Black : International is a fun sci-fi adventure with new faces of the franchise which takes the series in a fresh new direction with great fun to be had with fun comedic moments and great set pieces and action sequences Men In Black International is a enjoyable film to sit back and enjoy I recommend people check this film out.
Rated PG - 13 : for sci-fi action, some language and suggestive material
This film centres around a woman named Molly who saw the Men in Black when she was younger and seeks them out as she wants to work with them. After being recruited she is partnered with one of the most legendary agents in the agency Agent H and they are put on a case to see if theirs a mole in the MIB
Tessa Thompson : Tessa does a splendid job. Tessa has been popping up more and more ever since 2015’s Creed And has been in the big Thor 3 and has been really making a name for herself and here she brings the required charisma for this performance. Here she plays a character in many respects in the same vain of Will Smith’s character from the series but she doesn’t try and duplicate her performance from his or try to copy it in any way she makes her new character her own while having homages to the original series. Tessa as I’ve mentioned many times before has amazing range as an actor and also can provide incredibly strong comedic chops that work so well that doesn’t feel forced or awkward and that’s what she provides here in spades she brings this very dry wit to the performance that just worked so well for me when watching it she has this charm to her and specific energy she infuses in her role that works so well as she can be walking the fine line of being comedic but also dramatic without one outweighing the other and having a perfect balance of emotions spread out and shown through the film. Tessa just rips through every moment and scene with fantastic cosmetic strength and amazing fun she provides all throughout this film while also having amazing onscreen chemistry with her co star Chris Hemsworth when together both provide an incredibly strong and dynamic onscreen duo that works so well together. This is probably one of Tessa’s more charming and charismatic performances I’ve seen with incredible comedic strength while getting the audience invested into her character and really just having a fun time onscreen. Tessa gives a fun filled performance that’s impossible not to enjoy.
F Gary Grey : F Gary gives a fresh new direction for this franchise! Gary Grey has given some incredibly strong films over the past few years with his amazingly frugally acclaimed Straight Outta Compton to 2017’s Fate Of The Furious he has been making a bigger splash in Hollywood over the last couple of years and I’m so happy he has as he’s a very capable filmmaker as shown in his past work. Here he explores the realms of science fiction which is a genre he’s not tackled or done before and so I was very interested when I heard he was directing the new Men In Black Spinoff film because Gary has a very different style that would be interesting to inject into this franchise. Here he shows good strength at having fun and what I mean by that is he doesn’t take the source material to seriously because we have so many action films where they take it sometimes way to seriously and he eases up on that and has fun with the material while maintaining a sense of serious tones at times in the film. He also introduces a slew of new characters which he shows great charm to in all their specific and special ways while expanding upon the universe and making it as big as possible in scale without loosing the style of what made the series so great. He brings a great balancing act by doing that as it pays off as he injects at times to much humour but has heart and a great fresh new story that goes in directions you don’t expect so he keeps you on your toes and gets you to have as much fun as possible with these new characters in this brand new take on this franchise. In other hands of another filmmaker this could of burned to the ground and it didn’t as Gary was able to bring it to the screen in great energy that just leaped off the page and onto the screen in such amazing ways and He makes sure you have a fun freaking time with this film which he does in great ways and F Gary Grey once again has been able to bring another big property into fresh bold new directions which keeps it fun and enjoyable to the last moment.
