Movie Man Darian Watching All Night Long

Dark Phoenix 

This is the worst X-Men film ever made! How far these films have fallen half of these films are very much a mixed bag theirs only a handful of great ones the exceptions being Logan, X-Men 2, Days of future past and First class and X-men one. The rest are all mediocre their not great but at least those tried to achieve some sort of plot line where this film is pure shit. It’s action sequences after action sequences with no character moments or any character building it’s just meaningless action with no subtext. The writers gave no care for these characters or the story being told they just wanted to throw visual spectacle onscreen and it’s a insult to Stan Lee’s legacy of characters and frankly I’m disgusted with the writers the director or the studio should of got new writers who actually knew what to do and how to actually write a story that made sense. This film insults the morals of a lot of the characters as well they make Charles Xavier out to be a total joke in this film and totally turns him from being the backbone and wise one to a total liar. This film is just a total failure to the X-Men franchise I don’t know if 20th century fox just didn’t care anymore and knew they would be bought out by Disney so they just put out another garbage X-men film just cause or they don’t give a damn about this property anymore. Because it shows in the work they don’t care the filmmakers don’t care and the director does not care either about this film.  

Firstly, The one positive I will give this film is the actors all do give a great job onscreen of their last outing as these characters. Sophie Turner  She actually Brings some pretty good depth and emotional range needed for the character and for her performance she is the heart of this film and does do a decent job at carrying this film on her back and does a pretty good job character and performance wise. James McAvoy regardless of the material he always shows up and gives a great performance same goes for Micheal Fassbender the entire cast all contribute great solid performances in this film It is just the script their given that is total shit that they unfortunately had to work with that could of been so much better. The actors all had their hearts into the right place and still cared very much about these characters and their stories and all gave fantastic performances full of great heart and emotion that was expressed greatly throughout this film. That is the only positive that I am giving the film. 

Secondly let’s talk about that script, so I took a course many years ago that explains and breaks down how a film structure wise has to be told with the exposition, rising action then complication and then your climax and then go with reversal, falling action and lastly Denouement that is the basic structure of how a narrative works and this film throws that right out the window. I will say this the first 5 minutes into the film was totally fine to be quiet honest I thought the first five minutes were promising actually it was decently set up it Was exciting and after that it took a deep dive and went way down. Because what the writers did was they showcase a opening action sequence and then they follow it up with a small scene of dialogue after that and then back to the action portion of the film and it never touches upon or explains anything that gets told because for example this film has a villain that comes in very early on into the film and we never learn who she is where she is from or why she is here she just appears and it is such lazy writing and if the writers don’t care why should I the viewer care. They never flesh out any action theirs always the effect but no cause. Meaning they throw you into situations without properly setting it up and telling you why and or giving the characters better meaning to why their doing what their doing. The film felt like it was just flowing through a series of meaningless action sequences and then it just concludes and if this is the last X-Men film they are concluding with until Disney’s take on the characters then I will say this 20th Century Fox you blew it you gave us an amazing film with Logan and I am still so confused to how you couldn’t deliver a solid X-Men to end the series on. This film was even pushed back because they felt it could be fixed upon and that is why it came out this year I could only imagine what the original cut looked like. 

Lastly, This film spits in the face of Marvel Fans, fans of the franchise and its characters and leaves the franchise with a incredible sour taste in your mouth not even the strong performances from the cast could save this pile of shit. Dark Phoenix is lazily written, lazily directed and one of the worst comic book movies ever made and it is definitely the worse X- Men film ever made which I didn’t think would be possible after the shit show that was X-Men : Origins : Wolverine but apparently you can make a worse film then that   this film makes X-Men Origins look like Citizen Kane compared to this movie I would watch that film anytime before ever watching this film ever again because at least it tried to actually make a story that made sense. I thought after X-Men : The Last Stand we could get a proper story for the Jean Grey/ Dark Phoenix storyline apparently not Last Stand’s portrayal of Jean Grey is even better then this and it totally also insults the greatness of that character too. Overall if you were wanting a solid take on the Jean Grey storyline and were waiting for a good take on it this film shits the bed massively and this Phoenix crashes and burns and never soars to its potential

Sophie Turner : Sophie gives a decent performance of the title character! She has been only playing this beloved character only since X - Men : Apocalypse and I really feel bad for her for the reason you can tell she is giving her all to portrayal this character in the best light possible. What has been tough for her is that she’s been giving a solid portrayal of the character she’s just been given shit direction and terrible dialogue and to her credit I give her massive props with trying in any sense of it to try to escalate the material she’s given with her performance because she is pretty damn good in this film. Now a lot of people may say she’s over the top with her emotional aspects in her performance and you know what after seeing what she brings to the Jean Grey character she was fantastic she brings the emotional weight needed and really showcases her fantastic range and she really puts her heart into her work here. She has great moments in this film to showcase her talent as when she speaks you can hear the sadness, confusion and pain and she brings it to the full front of her performance and voices it very well without it coming across as over the top o emotionally pulled back. She was very convincing in the film when she was in pain you believed her when she was angry you damn well believed her she has this very genuine approach to the character that jelled so well onscreen as she makes it seem very natural and authentic. She gives what is the best onscreen performance of this character she just sadly brings a great performance in an otherwise shit film. She has great layers and sides to her she kept evolving as the film progressed and went places emotionally that we haven’t seen the character go which was exciting to watch and Sophie Turner did a fabulous job at it. Overall Sophie Turner deserved better as her performance was a damn good one in a bland film. 

Simon Kinberg : You destoryed the X-Men franchise! This man has never directed a film ever up to this point I wonder why he has produced a bunch of shit but has never actually directed a film after seeing this he shouldn’t even think about directing another film you had your shot to prove yourself and you messed it up just don’t direct do us a favour and don’t please stick to producing. He is incompetent, lazy and has not a care for these characters at all but why should I expect anything from the screenwriter of the 2015 Fantastic Four. Spit in the face of the fans and royally pissed me off because it didn’t even feel like he tired to make it good he just threw a bunch of action sequences together and said here you go. He made the audience feel like idiots because my thought on his attitude to this was “ oh people don’t need to think or have characters they care about make smart meaningful choices lets just throw worthless action shit in front of them and see if it sticks”. Simon Kinberg makes incredibly unwise choices and you know what this is the last X-Men film we are getting Simon so I don’t know if you even cared about the characters but I do and you frankly don’t because it shows in your work and I am frankly appalled, insulted, lied to, disgusted and amazed they would let you direct this film. You made choices for the characters that were not in the vein of what they would do with a meaningless plot and terrible villain their is no redeeming quality to your work on this film. I am absolutely and completely disappointed in your direction of the final conclusion to this franchise.
