Movie Review : The Hustle
The Hustle
This film is a waste of great talent! I was really looking forward to this film to the point I didn’t watch any of the trailers or any marketing for the film as I wanted to be genuinely surprised as it has worked in the past for me with films like Logan. Now please keep in mind that I did enjoy Anne Hathaway’s performance. Now that I’ve established that this film is literally the exact same plot, characters and outcome of Dirty Rotten scoundrels the only difference is the gender swap. They have done this with the female ghostbusters then again with Oceans 8 and now with the Hustle. It’s not that I have a problem with female led films I love Kill Bill and many other female led films but woman deserve better then this crap dish your served. I’m not saying it’s worse then Beauty And The Beast or Jack And Jill as those films have earned the right in the worst films of all time list in my books. This film is not the worst film to ever grace this planet but it’s also not fantastic either it just is bleh. The film could of attempted to of done something with the same source material and change it up by trying something new which it does not it just does a retelling of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels beat by beat. This is probably one of the most disappointing films I’ve seen this year as I really do enjoy the actors in this film. I don’t go to see a film to hate it I go to enjoy it and when I’m let down it’s disappointing and that’s what happened here sheer disappointment which sucks as I really wanted to like this film.
Anne Hathaway does a fun performance here that is really funny and I loved what she brought to the character. She try’s something different and something we haven’t seen from her which was great as she really gives a great new look at what she can do comedically and it’s terrifically presented onscreen and I loved her performance very witty very done comedically and overall just a delight to watch. Rebel on the other hand is just being Rebel and that’s literally what she said in an interview about her character and that’s the problem she’s playing the same character over and over again and it’s exhausting Melissa McCarthy did it for years and that’s exactly what Rebel is doing. I think she’s very talented as I enjoyed her in isn’t it romantic and the first Pitch Perfect so she’s shown she can give a good performance when she wants to but for some reason she just brings the same qualities to every other character she usually portrays and it’s not just annoying but exhausting and so her performance just comes across as bland and nothing new from her is shown onscreen to showcase her talent.
Lastly, This film is cringe worthy and very bland its execution of the comedy does land at some parts but unfortunately does miss the mark for a lot of the portion of it. But due to Anne's fun and entertaining performance she is the only saving grace for this film for me from being truly horrendous she is the soul reason I enjoyed with a small bit of fun but besides that the Hustle is a mixed back with both glaring flaws but still bits of fun to be had.
Rated PG - 13 : for crude sexual content and language
This film revolves around two con woman who are very smart at what they do but when they cross paths they are threatened by one another and compete to see who can con someone the best and be the top con artist

Anne Hathaway : Hathaway goes into new territory with her comedically entertaining performance. Anne hasn’t done comedy for some time her last real big comedy was Oceans Eight from last year but it wasn’t a big role like she has here. In this film she has great material to work off of and really bites her teeth into the character and gives a very juicy and fun filled performance. Anne provides great comedic timing and really attempts something different then what we’re used to seeing her do with her comedic talents. She plays this very sleek con woman who’s for the most part using a very strong British accent that is hilariously entertaining as she plays it so straight which makes it come across comedically more hilarious by that execution. She’s able to show great comedic moments but also be so unrelentingly charming with fantastic charisma. As when she delivers her dialogue she pops the words off the page and bring them to life with great energy and steals each frame of this film with her incredible performance. She brings such diverse amount of layers to her performance to make it truly memorable and entertaining to the last frame as she chews up every scenery and delivers one of her strongest comedic performances in years as you can also see the amazing amount of fun that Anne is having as she also doesn’t play it one note but also shows great lengths of the character throughout the film. She is the best part of this film and truly injects the film with great energy and fun she’s truly terrific.
Chris Addison : Addison fails to capture the comedically sleek film he envisioned. I had not seen any of his previous work before seeing this film but what he brings to this film is a direct rip off of a remake of a remake and it’s so bland. It has funny moments sure but that’s about it theirs some fun to be had but for majority of the film it’s very dull, bland cringe worthy and horribly written by a narrative stand point for a story. I know this film could of been so much better why didn’t you even attempt to try something original oh because that would cause the filmmaker to try something new. Sorry I just hate when they can’t create anything fresh but just feed off of films that have already done it and it’s not like it’s a sequel it’s a shot by shot remake rip off that lands in all the wrong areas and misses the mark on a massive scale. I will give credit the two main leads have fantastic chemistry but that could of been brought much better in a different setting as here it is fun with the two but the story doesn’t help support them with the weak narrative at hand and the direction was incredibly week and could of been improved on massively as I know it could of been amazing from some tweaking but it didn’t and it’s unfortunate. Overall Chris gives poor direction here.
