Movie Review : Eighth Grade

Eighth Grade
This film is a realistic depiction of the awkward phases and loneliness that people go through in elementary. This is an emotionally raw and well acted film that will have you talking about it long after it’s over.

This film is played and centres around a teenage girl struggling to get through the last week of Eighth Grade and the performance shown by its lead star Elsie Fisher gives a outstanding performance that carries the film and showcases amazing range of emotion. The film provides great performances from its cast.

And just a really great execution of its plot. It didn’t make it feel like a stereotype like in Mean Girls or the Duff but it really grounds the film in reality and captures these relatable situations that everyone ha gone through or related to on some level. That’s why I think this film really is an outstanding film it’s ability to be so brutally honest in its telling and provide strong performances throughout the film that really shines. It shows how tough it is to just be a teenager and I love that it’s a simple plot but is told with such complexity.

This film is so relatable and maybe you’ve been through some of the situations shown in the film and that’s what makes the film work and it’s saying to the audience don’t worry we feel you people go through this everyday and at the heart of it really provides a strong backbone of a message to walk away with and lessons to learn from this film centred with a truly magnetic performance from its lead overall Eighth Grade is a truly terrific film.

This film centres around a girl who’s socially awkward and wants to breakout of her shell and talk more but finds it tough as she struggles to get through her last week of eighth grade

Rated R : for language and some sexual material

Elsie Fisher : Elsie Delivers a career turning performance! Elsie is best known for her voice work on the animated series Despicable Me. She hasn’t really branched off into new territory before and this is her first real try in drama and her at the lead of it and she’s phenomenal. She gives an incredibly strong performance that is so emotionally driven but unlike any performance I’ve seen from a young actor in a while. She is very quiet and shy around others but when she dose these video diaries she just opens up and the way she captures that was sad but also amazing to observe as well. Because her ability to be so closed off and quiet and full of anxiety then to just be able to fully be comfortable in front of her Videos I thought was really interesting. For the reason she try’s to bring her character into territory that’s new and a different take on what you expect her character to do and I loved that. She also really makes you genuinely believe that she’s scared to socialize and just wants to stay quiet and she brings this character to life with her fantastic emotional range that shows many sides and really excels onscreen. She could be so happy and then just be utterly heartbreaking with just a look of a glare she really made you feel for her and she gives a performance that will want you to see her do more dramatic work as this film proves she’s fully able snd can do it. She brings a real and vulnerable take on this character that was brilliantly done by Fisher and gives a dazzling performance overall a great lead performance from Fisher.

Bo Burnham : Bo gives a honest and fantastically directed film! I have seen Bo act but not direct and I can’t wait to see what his next project will be directing wise as this film proves he’s incredibly capable of telling stories rooted in reality and knocking it out of the park. What he dose that really shines is his ability to show the awkwardness of Elementary and all the parts of it that make it so hard. He shows it as brutally honest as possible really showing the realistic view on things and executes them in a incredible way. Like theirs a side plot with the father that people can relate to or going to a party you hardly know anyone that went he shows situations that people have been through as well as getting fantastic performances from the cast as well he balances some of these hard hitting topics and really knock it out of the park. Overall he captures an environment that people can relate too and discusses topics about the hardships of being a teenager and proves he’s as incredible behind the lens as he is in front of it marvellous job.
