Movie Review : I Am Not A Serial Killer

I Am Not Serial Killer

This film is a great piece of film that flew under the radar. The film is based off the book series of the same name I was not aware it was a book series until after I saw the film. I for sure will check out the books for the reason because this film is truly engaging. The film resembles a Fargo kind of feel to it had this dark set in a small town vibe to it and it worked so well. As well as a fantastic lead performance by Max Records and a standout supporting performance by Christopher Lloyd. This film is a fantastic low budget film that everyone should check out.

The story is centered around a sixteen-year-old teenager named John Cleaver and he is fascinated with serial killers and that makes him quiet an outsider from everyone else and his therapist even says he is on the borderline of being a sociopath. One day a murder occurs in John’s small town and it engages him and he gets himself wrapped up in this Serial Killer terrorizing his town and he wants to find out who it is but his intense interest in the Killer could have only made him a target for the Killer’s next victim

Rated R: gory images, disturbing images language

Max Records: Max delivers a breakout lead performance in this fantastic film! Max was most well-known recently for his work in Where the Wild Things Are and played a small role in the sitter. But he really breaks out in this film establishing himself as a solid lead actor. He really shines in this film bringing this emotion to the screen that makes you really invested in his character. He as well is able to show so many layers of his character and his acting in the film. He brings this flair of creepiness to the screen that is discreet but you can still see. As well as showing this innocence to him that he gets you to believe that he isn’t a bad guy and he has good intentions it is just what he’s interested in makes you really think why he is into Serial Killers. And lastly he shows great intense emotion he is so invested in every scene theirs many where he stands out. One being where he is at this dance and he describes to someone who is bugging him what he can do if he pushes him too far and he is so incredible in that scene showing that he can showcase fantastic acting. Overall Max shows he can carry a film with a lead performance because of his incredible talent and I can’t wait to see what he does next

Christopher Lloyd: Lloyd Delivers a chilling performance that is single handily one of his best performances of his career! Christopher will always be known for his iconic role as Doc Brown in the back to the future franchise. But he has also given other dramatic work in smaller roles in films such as One flew over the cuckoo’s nest or even Who framed roger rabbit. But I haven’t seen Lloyd in a performance like this before where he plays a truly creepy character. In this film he plays this neighbor who goes by the name of Crowley and is this very sweet guy but under the surface isn’t what he shows himself to be. The way Lloyd was able to approach that kind of performance onscreen was fantastic he really engages you with his sweet innocence he brings to the character but also can disturb you with what else his character dose and shows. He plays a supporting role in this film and once he is onscreen you cannot take your eyes off him and his outstanding performance he is providing onscreen. There are three scenes he really stood out to me in and I will tell which without giving to much away. The first one being he is sitting in front of a fireplace and is talking to Max Records’s character and is reciting this deep poem and the sheer gentle emotion he is evoking in his eyes and the gentle touch in his voice was so astonishing. The second one being a phone call he has with Records and the sheer tone of menace in his voice was terrifying and the last one being the scene where he is in a church. He shares this moment between Records and he dominated the screen with his sheer intensity and chilling presence he brought was amazing. Lloyd delivers a layered performance and truly shines in this film delivering one of the finest performances of his career and one of the best supporting performances I have seen all year.

Billy O’Brien: Brien directs this film so incredibly well! This director I am unfamiliar with and I can’t wait to see what he does next because he did a fantastic job with this film. He was able to bring this sense of creepiness to the screen and made the environment feel very small but in a town where so much is happening and I loved that. Surrounding the film with fantastic performances from the cast he truly engages the audience with his ability to tell this interesting story onscreen. He got you invested in the characters and was able to pay homage to films like Fargo and it worked so well. His style of filmmaking is so fascinating he makes the film feel very found footage like with the feel of the picture and the sense of realism and reality he provides onscreen. I can’t wait to see what he does next overall he directed this film greatly.

The Lighting: fantastic use of colors in the film! Like I said earlier the film felt very much like a found footage film on the way the film was used in the sense of the look and feel of the frame. It had this colorful grey feel the frame that made it feel very grounded in its setting and really made the frame pop out I loved the tones used for this film.

The Cinematography: The camerawork was used greatly in this film! It was shot beautifully there are many wide and landscape shots that help show the full environment of where this story takes place and it really helped express the danger and intensity through its ability to showcase it from the lens I loved it. It felt so expressive fantastic camerawork.

Score: The music composed for this film was amazing. It felt very much like the Halloween theme where it is all techno. It was able to show the eeriness of the story by its ability to express it through the composed score it did a fantastic job and it really got me engaged through the melody I loved it.
