Movie review: The Great Gatsby
The great Gatsby - August 30th 2013
This movie was mind blowing. It was enormous. Sets were fantastic and
cinematography was amazing. A great portrayal of Jay Gatsby played by
Leonardo DiCaprio. The film lived up to my expectations. It moved along at
a certain pace - not too fast or too slow so you can keep up with the film
and understand it.
Rating: PG-13 for some violent images, sexual content, smoking, partying
and brief language.
A war veteran finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle.
Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal as Jay Gatsby was amazing. The life he
brought to the character and the emotion. What made it so good was he
didn't try to imitate Robert Redford's version of Gatsby. He made the
character his own which was brilliant. And what made his performance so
amazing was the fear and the anger you see in him in the film. That was
what made the film worth watching; seeing the character unfold. It will be
no surprise if he dose an amazing job in his upcoming movie The Wolf of Wall
Street.
Toby Maguire - one of the best performances I've seen this year . He played
the straight man and the life he brings to Nick Caraway was great just like
DiCaprio. It was the emotions that caught my attention. The emotion that
he struck in his character. He brought this joyful look in his soul and
eyes when he was in New York like it was a brand new place. Loved his
performance! Best performances I've seen of his.
Cary Mulligan's portrayal as Daisy was the exact way I pictured her in my
head when I was reading the novel. She played this stylish in-love
broken-hearted character. There was a certain look she had in her eyes when
she was with Gatsby like she was in love for the very first time and she
felt alive again. Her performance was amazing!
This film was predictable at times but not all the way through. Reading the
book was not the same as the movie. The book was more confusing than the
film. This film reminded me of a David O. Russell movie (Silver Linings
Playbook).
The cinematography was great but not the best I've seen. But that being
said, there was a few breathtaking shots when you see Gatsby swimming in the
pool and slowly rising up. That was brilliant how they shot the scene and
the party scenes were so well shot. I cannot not find a flaw in any of
those scenes. The lighting was amazing when they were partying and it was
all joyful. They would use bright colours. They used a sort of 1920's
lighting at times. When it went dark, it was like all the happiness had
been sucked out of the world. Great lighting.
The music that was used in it was the top artists of 2012, Fergie, Will.i.am
and Florence and the Machines. But the real good music in the film is
Young and Beautiful sung by Lana del Rey. It is such a good song. The
emotion and power she puts in the song makes it such a empowering song.
