Movie Review : Mickey 17!
Mickey 17!
This is a science fiction politically driven drama that once again is masterfully crafted by the incredible Bong Joon Ho! Now off the heels of his Oscar winning film Parasite he is back with yet another futuristic look at the landscape of the human race with a lot to say with themes of politics and the middle class and sheer treatment of people in society. Robert Pattinson plays Duel roles and is amazing at establishing separate characteristics for both that make both of them so memorable and giving himself a task he has not faced before in terms of performance in his incredible body of work. Mickey 17 is a film many will say is not as good as Parasite but that is not a fair comparisons as all of Bong’s films are some of the greatest films put to screen and so I will say is it one of the best he has ever given us? No but I still enjoy it for what it is and it dose not have to be an all timer great in order to be enjoyed he has great ideas and concepts in this film and I feel in years to come this film will find its audience that really gravitate toward this picture.
Firstly, Bong Joon Ho makes a film once again with another political statement and that isn’t new to anyone considering Okja was about the farming community and big food corporations and how they treat animals, Parasite was about the social ladder of the middle class and Snowpiercer also tackled similar subjects. So the man loves to really delve into hot discussions and do it through a landscape of originality that is one of the reasons why so many people gravitate towards his style he enjoys having films spark heavy discussion and in a world where most people would veer away from political driven shots at the government he still stays true to what his way of storytelling is which is brutally honest sure its entertaining but he has a massive degree of truth injected into all of his films that is the reason they resonate so well with audiences. They are very much think piece films done in a very creatively well fleshed out way. What he tackles here in a very memorable light is how the higher ups think of the middle class and how in some lines of work they just see them as disposable and can do whatever the want to them with zero remorse. It is about also fearing things we don’t understand without thinking things through first and how we come to a hard negative judgement on something just because we don’t know what it is so the first response is to fear it and attack it. That is for sure shown in very brutally honest ways and I can see how some people may not like this film but it is meant to call out the people that are quick to judgment without properly understanding something first while also using Robert Pattinson’s character as a meat puppet for political gain with no real regard it has to his mental state. Bong Joon Ho does not hold back on his portrayal on how ignorant power hungry people can be just to make themselves appear liked and get ahead in their journey of discovery if that means destroying what they need to and to squish the little man. The film soars due to not holding back when it comes to tackling these tones it is able to integrate the science fiction and dramatic elements of the story in a greatly well balanced way that the writing and structure of the film is one of the strongest parts of what makes this film so amazing!
Secondly, The performance that everyone is here for is Robert Pattinson and to see how he can successfully pull off these Duel Roles and I can say with full confidence he does it greatly. He was able to show one side of this human who is very socially awkward and just wants to have structure and enjoy what he is doing and the other side wants to disrupt and correct people that wrong him and take no mistreatment from anyone so they are constantly at odds with each other which made for a great challenge for Pattinson from an acting point of view and he just knocked it out of the park. He got such juicy duel roles and got to explore both of them at great depth and amazing detail in how they tick and what makes them so polar opposite’s. I would even say it is among some of the best work he has put to the screen he is a dynamite of a performer and crackles onscreen with his latest role. I will add Mark Ruffalo has this over the top emotionally disconnected politician he plays and he is freaking great I know so many people will be focused on Pattinson but his work as the ignorant power hungry figure he played so well. As at times you can tell it comes across with humour but only because the sheer moronic nature of what this guy thinks is the best course of action for himself he could care less about his followers as long as it gets him ahead he will tell them anything they need to hear even if it’s total works of fiction and not an ounce of truth to it. Mark is amazing giving a tremendous supporting turn that shouldn’t be ignored. Overall the performances from everyone is great but it’s Pattinson who walks away with this film.
Lastly, Mickey 17 is a political satire in many ways in how it depicts the rich using the middle class to get ahead and then mixes it in with science fiction elements. Bong Joon Ho soars in yet another tightly written screenplay that to a degree has a sort of relevance to it that may be why so many people feel divided on how to feel about the picture. I do think though it is a well written and fantastically directed film with a great deal of style and many themes you could pick apart and discuss for years to come and at the centre of it is a performance by Robert Pattinson that among some of the best work he has done. Overall Mickey 17 I think is outstanding and worth checking out it may not be Bong’s newest classic but it is for sure another strong addition to his filmography.
The film is about a man who signs up to be a expendable for his government and lives and dies over and over and one day discovers their is two of himself but only one can remain

Robert Pattinson : Pattinson gives a sensational turn as Mickey in this film! Now it is not a surprise even slightly that he gave a terrific turn in this as he is one of the hardest working actors today giving some of the best work onscreen and has become one of my favourite actors to watch onscreen in anything he is in. He has teamed up with countless great filmmakers but this one is super special as he is paired up with Bong Joon Ho who is very selective when it comes to who he casts in his films and the fact he chose Pattinson to lead his next film speaks volumes to how highly respected he is by the filmmaker. Now Pattinson had double duty in terms of work cut out for him as he is taking on not just one but two roles and he is the kind of talent where he can do both I can only imagine the exhausting toll It took on him but he was remarkable as both parts. In the film we see him as this one version of himself that had yet to die and now he has died over 16 times before so this is the 17th version of him and we know that he will come back and be spit out as a new version of himself each time so it had become quite routine for him. That being said he mentions how it always hurts and this one particular time when he should of died from being eaten he isn’t and the longer he remains alive the more he has for not wanting to die he is tired of being used as this experiment and he enjoys not having to be spit out. This version of him is more awkward and stutters and is a bit of a lovable bumbling person that means well he just has very little ability to speak his mind he likes having a sense of routine and structure in his life and the way he plays that part of him is so innocent and to a degree pure as he just wants whats best for him in a positive way. Pattinson taps into that sensitive side and very tender part of his soul to carve out what this character would look like and he excels tremendously at it then when we see that their is a duplicate running around after they presumed the one that should of been eaten is dead they spit out another one but duplicates are a big no where he is from so only one can claim to stay around. That is where the conflict lies as we see his other version is more hostile and psychically aggressive and assert himself by acting out he is not one to go quietly and that is where they struggle to see eye to eye as their alike visually but personality wise they couldn’t be further apart from one another. The more aggressive version he plays has multiple scenes where he is telling his more socially kept to himself version to quit acting so spineless and to speak his mind and regardless of what he says he won’t do it and what I love about the dynamic they have is they may not be alike but their is a unspoken understanding and respect between them both. Robert Pattinson was able to show this intense side to him that was more loud and emotionally tense so he got to chew up the scenery in a way that was really memorable and he brought characteristics to both parts to really make them pop and at the core of both of them their just two men that don’t wanna die and to survive and their is a sincerity to the performance that is touching and moving and Pattinson just blew me away with how remarkable he was as not just one but two roles. He explores so much depth and layers and we see such a spectrum of emotions from him that will have your jaw firmly on the floor overall Robert Pattinson gives once again another truly sensational performance.
Bong Joon Ho : Bong Joon strikes again with another great film! Now Bong Joon - Ho is one of the finest filmmakers of the last 50 years he has constantly been one using himself with his films if its Memories of Murder, Parasite, Okja, Snowpiercer he always likes to comment on the current state of things in a way that is both human but with a touch of dystopian to his frames at times. As he never fails to engage an audience with his storytelling he shapes the film with such rich and a smartly planned out world you are locked into the setting within minutes and here he does that once again. Here he talks about how people who are put in at risk jobs or any job for that manner aren’t properly cared for or looked after and are only looked at as a test subject and sure some may consider his message to be pretty aggressive but its his truth and Bong Joon - Ho has always spoken his mind like that. The film also has great elements of comedy but it is never humour that comprises the dramatic beats the laughs come out of the stress of the drama at hand in a very smartly placed way. The science fiction element Also works so well as we are on this spaceship the whole time and Pattinson is essentially used as lab experiment to test things out on and their comes a point where he grows tired of it and just wants to live. He drives home the message that we should be more curious and less judgmental when it comes to new discoveries as Mark Ruffalo’s character is the prime example of hostility in a political position that will strike anything down that he does not like without thinking it through clearly. It is a great film about the destruction of using violence and not understanding something before lashing out and also about the sheer enjoyment of living life and not wanting to be looked at as a corporate puppet. Bong Joon - Ho gives very honest takes on topics that are relevant now in the way he knows how to discuss it with the audience do I think it is his best film since parasite? No but I did very much enjoy his work on this and his collaboration with Robert Pattinson was truly astonishing it is another clever political piece with mild humour and that distinctive style of creativity that Bong is known for he gives once again another fantastic film that will be talked about for years to come.
