Movie Review : Long Shot

Long Shot
This is one of the best romantic comedies I’ve seen in a very very long time! This is one of the most smartly written and clever romantic comedies I’ve seen since probably either the F word. This film follows the formula of what is a Romantic comedy but yet it is so much more then jus that one side. It also tackles political themes and also some dramatic moments too it is very complex and layered for a romantic comedy and that’s what so appealing about it is that it’s so different and such a breath of fresh air then what we’ve been getting from this genre in recent time.

Secondly, Seth Rogan is a genius as he thought of Charlize Theron for this film and their paring onscreen is incredible. The onscreen dynamic they have is fantastic as they work off so well together and are able to have such great witty banter thrown back and forth but also be able to do very emotional and more intimate moments that are as effective in the execution as well. They are they onscreen couple you never thought you needed but are so happy it happened. As you really invest into them not just as characters but as a great onscreen duo as well and it’s electric I really hope they do more films together as they make it seem so natural and genuine onscreen. Both also contribute very entertaining and hilariously emotional performances that are so well balanced throughout the film as well.

Lastly, This film stands out for me because it is aware of the romantic comedy tropes as they reference it in the film at one point so they are incredibly self aware which I love and it’s able to bring so many new styles and tones to the genre that hadn’t been tackled before and I love the aspect of that. For the fact that a romantic comedy can be more then just a conventional love story it can tackle serious themes within it and this film does and is able to balance out the comedy, serious elements and romance so perfectly and due to the great charismatic performances and terrific direction this film was such a entertaining watch i do recommend people go check it out it’s so much fun and you’ll be so glad to have seen it.

Rated R : for strong sexual content, language throughout and some drug use

This film follows the story of a Secretary of State who’s trying to run for president and when she finds a old friend who becomes her speech writer they both fall for one another

Charlize Theron : Theron sheds her comedic wit and dramatic chops in this film and it’s such a delight to watch. Theron is one of my favourite actresses ever as she’s always chosen strong female characters to portray onscreen as her portrayal of the deranged killer in the film Monster Earned her the first Oscar in her career and has since gone on to do so many more fantastic roles over the years the one that stands out to many more recently was her kickass work in the Mad Max Fury Road film which to this day I count as one of the most unbelievable snubs ever as she deserved that Best Actress nomination for that film. And here she delves into her comedic skin and really shows a lighter tone to her onscreen persona this time around but she also has her great share of dramatic parts as well which is what I love about her performance is she’s able to balance these two very different emotional tones and make them equally as impactful in the execution onscreen. As she plays the sectary of state who’s trying to run for president and she’s able to really show great strength in her work onscreen as she’s a hilarious person and really showcases that ability greatly throughout the film with tremendous comedic timing that was brilliant as she has great wit and charm that was wonderful to watch. I haven’t seen Charlize really bring her comedic talent front and centre before and damn is she fantastic at it as she doesn’t ham it up every moment she knows when to stop and to switch it up and show so many other layers of her character through the film which is terrifically handled. Charlize has great charisma and charm brought to the role that will have you smiling and laughing but she also is able to play the smaller more intimate and emotional moments so well onscreen as she brings great dramatic weight to those moments with great committed emotion. Charlize really shows a ton of depth in her performance in this film from comedic to dramatic and really does it amazingly well giving an overall incredibly fun entertaining performance full of great emotion that will leave you smiling.

Seth Rogan : Rogan gives an emotionally Comedic and charming performance putting him in territory we’ve never seen him in before. Rogan has been giving us amazing comedic films over the years that are classics now and here he brings his style of humour but also brings lengths of drama and romantic charm that we haven’t seen him bring to screen before. He brings great emotional range which he hasn’t shown since 2015’s Steve Jobs Bio pic where he really showed his dramatic chops in that film and here he’s able to show the great comedic wit he always brings to the table but also show great depth to the performance and character at hand as well. He walks great lengths to show very different sides of himself as he can be very charming and hilariously funny with his fantastic timing and then be passionately dramatic the next. That’s what I love about Rogan in the film is that it’s not a one note performance he’s using different emotional strengths throughout his character arc and the film which really works incredibly well. As again we haven’t seen Rogan really delve into serious performance in his films expect for that one bio pic and here he is showing a little bit more of that side and it’s fantastic as it seems so natural and genuine. As he had me bursting out laughing every moment of this film from his great timing as an actor with his comedic skills but he also was able to simmer it down and really show very strong emotional moments in the film. That was effectively done due to his great range and talent as an actor. On top of the fact his chemistry with Charlize was also electric to witness unfold onscreen as well this is one of  my favourite Performances he’s done as it’s so multi layered and shows such strength from him in so many areas and it’s such a emotionally entertaining performance.

Johnathan Levine : Levine is back baby! This man let me down massively with his horrendous film Snatched but as we all know that i love what he did many years ago with 50/50 which also stared Seth Rogan. And to me 50/50 was his last truly fantastic film and I’m so glad to say that streak has ended as he has delivered a fantastically directed film here that works on so many levels. He was able to adapt the romantic comedy genre on its head and show that it can be more then just a one note genre but also tackle so many other themes throughout it. As this film does by tackling political issues, social issues and also still keeping it entertaining with the fantastically and brilliant timed humour brought to the film sprinkled with fantastic amounts of romance that was so well done. He also captures lighting in the bottle chemistry with his two leads that truly give electric performances through this film that will have you laughing and crying. Levine was able to balance the comedy and drama and romance all at once and really give healthy and great amounts of those styles so well that not one felt unbalanced or too much and it’s due to the great direction as he really gives a great breath of fresh air to the genre with what he’s done here with this film. He shows that you can be  a romantic comedy with a powerful message that is multilayered and work as he pulls it off so well from the fantastic talent of his cast to the incredibly sharp writing Johnathan is on his A Game and delivers one of the finest romantic comedies in years!
