Movie Review : The Dead Don't Die

The Dead Don’t Die
This is a old fashioned zombie film! This film is entertaining but has many plot holes but is still enjoyable to watch. I get that this film is trying to be a tribute to George A Romero who was a mastermind of the zombie genre. Here we get like I mentioned a very old fashioned like zombie film and it's fun but the storyline is so straightforward that the character development with some of its characters felt so hollow. The film has a very slow pace to it and that's the intent as it is a zombie flick but at the same time the characters feel incredibly lacking in substance for character depth for me to invest into them they felt like recyclable characters which is a shame because this film has a stellar cast from Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Danny Glover and Selena Gomez . The only standouts being Bill Murray and Adam Driver since we spend the majority of the film with those two characters those two are the only ones with the most character depth and or backstory to get us invested into them.

Firstly, I'll say what I liked so the cast is fantastic even though some of the, could of been improved upon or had more screen time the cast assembled for the film is terrific because when they are onscreen their giving fantastic onscreen moments to the film to really make it as fun and entertaining as possible. And the chemistry between Adam Driver and Bill Murray is fantastic as it makes for fantastic moments of great comedy and sheer fun. As well the film represents zombies in its most authentic and true form as zombies walk they don't run and that approach to the genre hasn't been done well in a very long time and despite the many problems this film has this is one of them that it gets right. It's able to respect the genre its tackling and do it justice as it has great mix of elements of horror and comedy and combining together to make a great combination where one doesn't feel outweighed by the other.

Secondly, the problems I had was that it felt like the film's plot could of been explored a lot more then what it did. As this has like I said a great cast and a lot of the great characters don't get used to their full potential and are only in it for minutes which sucks as those are actors and characters I would of loved to have seen more of onscreen. So the lack of using the actors to its full potential was a massive flaw for me and then theirs the pacing which felt so long. The film really drags out longer then it should of it could of been an hour and twenty four minutes and trimmed off a good twenty minutes as their were scenes that was just unnecessary filler and didn't really contribute anything to move the story forward as it felt a little overlong and the film goes in directions that you don't expect which is good I like being surprised in a film but it went to far. What I mean by that is they show things without any context to why and so it leaves you with more questions then answers which was another flaw I found in the film as well.

Lastly,  The Dead Don't Die is a very flawed and messy film narratively but due to its strong cast and handful of fun moments in the film their is still fun to be had with this film. If you want to see a old style Zombie film do check this out it is a film that had a great cast an interesting story and with some improvements could of been so much better I do recommend people check this film out.

Rated R : for zombie violence/gore, and for language

This film revolves around a small town where the Dead rise and try to overtake the town

Adam Driver : Driver gives a very tongue and cheek performance that is greatly acted! Adam brings this very charismatic and dry wit to his performance that is very entertaining to watch unfold onscreen. Driver to me is the only performance that is incredibly energetic through the entire film. He is able to bring such a dry sense of humour and brings it to the screen in a way that is very charismatic like I mentioned but he doesn’t make it to over the top comedic but keeps it very contained which makes for fantastic comedic moments through the film and also is able to show some great other strengths through his character and his performance that he gives onscreen. This is a role I was surprised Adam took on but he did a great job at the character he plays as he is one of the centre characters of the film and he really keeps the film entertaining to watch with his incredible fun performance at hand. He shows great lengths of depth to his performance of comedic timing that is truly and fantastically well shown onscreen and also some dramatic moments as well he really relishes in the role and has fun with it as you can tell when he’s onscreen Adam gives hilariously well timed delivery to his lines and gives a entertaining performance that escalates the film with his very fun performance presented in the film.

Jim Jarmusch : Jim gives a fine job at directing this horror comedy. Jim is a director who’s work I have heard of I just haven’t seen until seeing this film and after seeing what he does with this film I definitely would check out his other works as he has a interesting approach to his storytelling. Now the execution was messy but the story and its characters is what makes it fun to watch. What I think happened is Jim brings all the stuff needed for a entreating zombie flick a solid cast fun performances and lots of zombie fun but it’s the execution of how he did it that could come across as a little slow and bland at times. As the pacing of the narrative is very slow and the plot could of been expanded upon to it’s full potential which it doesn’t and also if he gave more context to what he shows it would be not as confusing and I think Jim had a really great film at the centre of it as I can see it but due to the messy execution of this story the film suffers from confusing side plots and it’s slow pacing which effects the overall look and enjoyment of the film and I think Jim did a good job at showing the elements mixed with comedy and horror and having something to say very well and if things had just been tweaked a bit it would of benefited massively to make the film a lot better then it came out to be as I can see the love he had of old style horrors he wanted to inject into this film.  but overall Jim does a fine job.
