Movie Review : The Beach Bum

The Beach Bum
This film is a hell of a ride! Moondog the main character is like if Hunter S. Thompson and Bill Murray had a child that would be MoonDog. This film is packed and loaded with tons of fun and outrageous scenes from Sharks to Blind Pilots and even a boat load of 50 million dollars gets blown up. This film has it all man and I actually really dig this film. A lot of people will say it’s just over the top nonsense but after seeing what Harmony Korine brought a few years ago with Spring Breakers I am familiar with his style and how he executes his story’s onscreen.

Firstly, His films are very much about experience and then story which is a Benefit and a downfall as I love his approach to his story’s but since he leaves the story’s on the back burner and makes it more visual it doesn’t leave the audience with enough context and understanding of the story to follow along as then it just feels like random events one after the other that’s a flaw in the film is that it fails to bring together a narrative that is well put together as it felt like just moments and scenes of MoonDog getting into fun but without any real context so that was a big falter.

Secondly, the film dose succeed in many aspects though and I’ll break down how. So first off the tone this film goes for is fun just unrelenting unapologetic fun to the one hundredth degree. It’s about just enjoying every moment of life and that it’s ok to be unpredictable and just do whatever you want and theirs a truth to the message that Harmony is putting in the film and it speaks loud and clear and I loved that message as it is an important one to hear and some people may find it cheesy that I say that but it’s true you need to have fun sure maybe not to the Insane degree the character gets into but to enjoy the moments and Harmony succeeds at showing that onscreen even if it becomes crude at times. The tone set for the film was well set and well executed and it’s a fantastic style that was brought to the screen of great hilarious fun which leads me to my second point and that is the man at the centre of the film Mr Matthew McConaughey who gives a career defining performance in so many aspects. I know what your thinking the Beach Bum is one of Matthew’s greatest onscreen performances? Yes it is because Matthew as a person is a very zen and relaxed person as it is so to have him portray someone who’s morals and creed he lives by is enjoy all the moments and have fun is exactly what McConaughey stands for which is what makes him perfect for this character and also what makes him so damn entertaining sure MoonDog might not make the best at choices but he has fun at whatever he’s doing and Matthew conveys the unrelenting fun and joy of being alive in his performance and it just crackles onscreen. It’s a perfect role for Matthew and damn he’s fantastic in it.

Lastly, the film is more of an experience and a feeling then it is a story which is different in its execution but meaningful in its message as it shows great beauty through its imagery and scenes that show great vibrance and colour that shines right through the lens it follows the moments rather then a story which to a certain level is very deep as it’s about the moments in life rather then following a direct story. And to have a film that gives the audience an experience of joy and happiness in the political times we are in is what people need and I think the film was very effective in giving myself a great experience of just sitting back and enjoying this film.

Finally, This film has great heart humour and a rip roaring performance by Matthew McConaughey that will have you laughing the whole way through with hilariously shocking moments that happen throughout the film. Harmony has done another fantastic colour filled experience film about Joy and enjoying life with its deep rooted message and hilarious cast and style this film is to much fun not to enjoy I recommend people check it out.

This film centres around an adventurous poet alcoholic who has unrelenting fun and the many adventures that he runs into involving exploding boats Sharks and Drugs

Rated R : For Perverse drug and alcohol use, language throughout nudity and some strong sexual content

Matthew McConaughey : Matthew gives  a hilariously scene stealing performance that just pops off the screen. Matthew Plays MoonDog this hippie like no stress no problem kind of guy who demands the screen with his hilarious depiction of this person. The moment he’s onscreen he grabs your attention and just enchants you with his great swagger and charmingly funny persona. He walks talks and looks like his character he totally immersed himself head on into this fun loving guy. As when Matthew speaks he has this really relaxed very zen tone to his voice and on top of that then has the most outrageous outfits and makeup on that you don’t even see Matthew but simply the character onscreen. You can tell he is having such fun with the role he’s playing and that comes across greatly in his performance as he just has this really loud and colourful performance that works magnificently. He has this really interesting delivery as I said he changed his voice of how he usually sounds so he delivers his dialogue in a way that he thinks is poetic with deep meaning and Matthew shows that this man even though he lives an outrageous lifestyle has some very deep and profound things on himself and the environment around him. As his comedic timing is dynamite onscreen as he knows when to make a funny comment and it landed every time. It may seem like he’s playing this over top comedic person the whole way through but he brings depth to him when he can onscreen and gets you to really latch on to him. As Matthew has this lovable quality brought to it. He just transformed into a completely different person shedding great emotional strength and hilarious comedic strength as well truly diving deep into the headspace of this person and just has great freaking fun doing it and you can’t take your eyes off of him Matthews Magnificent.

Harmony Korine : Harmony crafted this really vibrant and thought provoking film through experience imagery. Harmony made a film a few years back that had a similar execution in its style and story which was Spring Breakers that was a neon soaked film with great imagery which is some of the attributes he brings to The Beach Bum. Here he strokes the story with the underlining tone of free spirit and enjoying every moment and just unpredictable joy and laughter. Harmony loves being very flashy in his films and it comes across greatly as it’s a film he made to be fun and the thing is I enjoy that he has this vision of deep imagery with deep meaning but since the film like is Said before since it’s a film that carries this whole visual experience it lacks the substance of story which at times dose make the film suffer at some parts due to not a coherent story it is still enjoyable don’t get me wrong but their are places for improvement that he could of fixed. He also had a great cast carried but a terrific lead performance from Matthew and just a fun time to be had watching this film it’s a good directed film that shows Harmony giving another stylized experience piece that will for sure have you smiling.
