Movie Review : Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel
This is a enjoyable film and people need to calm down! So this film I saw last night and I needed a few hours to digest it and think on the film and is it a great film no is it a terrible film not at all but it is a damn enjoyable one. It has fantastic action sequences with great chemistry between Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson and also gives a great origin story as well. Now I do not understand the massive amount of hate the film is getting because of its lead actress wanting more diversity. Isn’t that a good thing and why can’t people be happy and enjoy the film instead of running to the internet like little whiny babies and writing negative shit. Now that I got that out of my system
First off, I thoroughly enjoyed the film as I really enjoyed the approach it took with the origin story and how it felt very much like a puzzle we had to figure out who she was and discover her identity I really loved that aspect brought to the film. I also really enjoyed the emotional aspect brought to the film as well as it shows a woman who just wants to know who she is and what she can do. The first half of the film I really loved and the second half did feel weaker.
Secondly, so yes the film is called Captain Marvel but a issue I had with the film was that it’s an origin tale and I really wanted to find out so much about this character and I felt as if we find small portions of her backstory told but not a total lot though. As the film felt as the plot was more the centre of it and the character backstory and finding out who the main character was left me underwhelmed at times as I did want to see more of her backstory explored. It did have a lot of tones also going on in the film and they didn’t have a clear look of what they really wanted this film to go in for his style and so it felt a little scattered at times in the film.
Lastly, The De - aging on Samuel L. Jackson was phenomenal it looked so authentic and that he really looked like how he looked back in the 1990’s it was jarring and the special effects team did a terrific job at really crafting Samuel L. Jackson’s younger look onscreen and make it seem and look so natural.
Finally, This film isn’t the best Marvel film but isn’t the worst. It definitely could of improved at parts but it also was great fun to watch as well with great action, humour and a very heartwarming tribute to Stan Lee as well this film is not as bad as people are saying it is the film is just enjoyable it neither heightened or lowered my expectations it was just enjoyable I do recommend people see this film.
This film centres around Carol Danvers and her origin story of how she became the powerful captain Marvel
PG - 13 : for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief suggestive language
Brie Larson : Larson gives a terrific performance for her debut as Captain Marvel. I found her to give a strong wielded performance as the title character. She was able to channel so many layers of emotions in her character. She could be witty and funny at times with great timing and then the next she could also be an action star and just be a total badass and then also show great moments of vulnerability and a real emotional aspect to her and you feel it as Larson like is said channels so many different emotions and layers and it is fantastic to watch onscreen. As you can see her having great fun playing this character and she really dose give a greatly entertaining performance you can’t help but love as she really puts her all into it and she drives this film with her great work in it. When she’s funny she’s genuinely funny and then when she’s crying or emotional you feel it and seems so authentically real. Larson gives a very strong debut as Captain Marvel by showing such a massive character arc and brings great depth to the screen and keeping the audience engaged and entertained the whole way through Larson is a badass in the film and really delivers a fun performance.
Samuel L. Jackson : Jackson gives a hilarious turn as Nick Fury in this film! Here he plays a younger pre eye patch Nick Fury and he played a bigger role in the film then I thought he would he really is the second lead in the film. Samuel brings his great charismatic energy to the performance and great humour that is genuinely funny and lands so perfectly as his timing is brilliantly done. He was captivating in the film giving one of his best turns as Fury that he’s ever shown onscreen. Samuel was able to also show elements of dramatic emotion as well and really covey it across the screen in such a believable way Samuel walks the balance between funny and serious and uses that great mixture greatly and delivers such a fun performance he really is the best part of the film for me at least. We got to find out more about his backstory while also not telling to much and Samuel giving the audience a fun filled performance full of humour and emotion. Samuel crackles his delivery in great fashion leaping the words of the page and giving it such life and energy he really is a scene stealer in this film Samuel L. Jackson gives one of his best turns as Nick Fury in this film.
Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck : These two filmmakers gave a interesting spin on the title character. I am aware they directed half Nelson a while back and that’s all I really know them from and here they did a good job at capturing the chemistry from the cast and giving great action sequences. But the plot felt very scattered at times leaving me underwhelmed from the lack of substance I got from Captain Marvel it felt as if the plot overrides the character and the visual and plot was more of the important aspect of the film when it should be character then plot. If they fixed that it would of been a lot stronger as I still did like their direction I loved their choice to show the flashes of her backstory and not really explain it to much and leave it to mystery. They also do very well at showing the origin of the character while also being able to show a plot that keeps you engaged and rooting for the title character. I feel as the first half was very well directed and the last half could of been done better as that’s why I am so divided on their direction as they impressed me but also did some things that bugged me too. It was very stylish filled with humour and heart but if they just focused more on fleshing out the characters more it would of been a lot stronger of a film and of the direction to. Overall it’s a good directed film.
