Movie Review : Marriage Story
Marriage Story
This is a heartbreaking brutally honest look inside the pain of divorce and the loss of love inside the relationship these two people lost. Adam Driver And Scarlett Johansson deliver some of their best performances ever as Scarlett delivers an emotionally charged performance of great incredible intensity and sadness and Driver brings a more emotional quietness but has small bursts of big emotional delivery until he eventually explodes in a powerful rage of emotion that is so compelling to watch but so heartbreaking. All the rest of the actors give great supporting performances Laura Dern is also fantastic in this film and the film really shows the two lead actors deliver truly magnificent performances that will get your attention within seconds and then just wow you with their magnificent and realistic portrayal of a couple going through a divorce with such emotional pain.
Firstly, This film is one of the most honest and authentic portrayals I’ve seen about divorce and the falling apart of a romantic relationship as the film shows the couple in a way I had not seen a story about divorce be told before. The film feels as if it splits itself into two and what I mean by that is for one part we will see the perspective of Scarlett’s character and the frame of what’s going on through her eyes and then the next we will see it through Adam’s characters eyes and both perspectives are very different and I loved that approach as I felt in a way we got to know them a lot more by that and also seeing how their feelings towards the same situation’s as we see Scarlett and how she’s holding up and then see how Adam is dealing with it emotionally and that balance back and forth narratively was so moving to me and so powerful and it was so brilliantly executed. I also felt the film had such a strong screenplay as well as the dialogue is crafted in such a way that it felt like words a couple would actually say like
It felt so realistic in its depiction of divorce and so grounded in realism and when Scarlett’s character would talk their would be such sadness but also a sense of hope as well and the way her dialogue was written was so well done and so heartbreaking as well it was perfectly soaked up within the script and then for Adams character I loved the approach to him as more quiet and very kept to himself but very emotionally expressive in his quietness and the way the script really shaped these characters and their dialogue was so sharp and felt so realistic as well.
Secondly, Noah Baumbach crafted a film not just about divorce even though that is the basis of the film it’s also so much more then that he shows the desperation to try to keep yourself together emotionally for your kid and also the themes of relationship, heartache and dreams as it tackles quiet a lot of heavy topics as well and their are a lot of films on couple relationships I’ve seen the only other one that I felt was in any way similar to this was Blue Valentine but even that films approach to the subject matter was very different then what Marriage Story does as it brings a very grounded approach to the story and really makes you feel the wave of emotional stress they both experience and seeing it from both their perspectives was brilliant.
Lastly, Marriage Story is a outstanding film that is a heartbreaking film with such deep rotted emotion and a great realistic approach to the narrative with truly phenomenal performances from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johnson as it’s also so beautifully written and directed by Noah Baumbach Marriage Story will break your heart but also make you compelled from start to finish as it is one of the best films to ever tackle the emotional stress of divorce this is a magnificent film that I recommend everyone go see.
This film tells the story of a couple who’s in the process of going through a divorce and both are fighting over custody to who gets their kid and we see how it effects them emotionally on both sides
Rated R : for language throughout and sexual references
Scarlett Johnson : Scarlett delivers her best performance of her career in this film! She’s been having a truly terrific year with the huge hit of Avengers Endgame and then Jojo Rabbit and now Marriage Story she’s had a great year for herself and I’ve seen her in a lot of films I really loved her in her supporting turn in Jojo Rabbit but her performance here in Marriage Story is incredible! She plays this wife and mother going through a divorce and she plays this character at absolutely getting ripped apart emotionally on the inside and try’s to keep it together through the course of the divorce getting finalized and their is two scenes in the beginning of the film that blew me away without giving anything away their is a scene where she just looks at Adam’s character with very little speaking and then when she turns the corner just sobs and cry’s herself to sleep I thought that was so powerful as it shows the strength she’s trying to control of keeping it together on the outside but on the inside she’s totally heartbroken and she brings that layer of authentic and really really vulnerable emotional pain to the screen in such a brilliant but incredibly powerful approach to it. Then their is another scene where she just pours herself out emotionally to this person she speaks to it’s a rather long scene too and not a moment of it was boring as once she starts speaking of what has been bugging her she just releases all of it in such a honest and emotionally bare way where you see the tears swell up in her eyes and the complete emotional exhaustion she’s been in and it not only told us about where her character was at emotionally but just in that scene she tells so much about herself and Scarlett is extraordinary in the film as she has played drama roles before and has been great in all of them but she really steps up to another level and caliber we hadn’t seen from her before as she wears her heart on her sleeve and brings this role to life with such sadness but also hope that really shatters your emotionally to witness and when she speaks you just want to hug her but theirs also moments when she isn’t talking and it’s just looks she can give that can speak such volumes and she just soaks you every scene she’s in and knocks it out of the park she truly has given a career best performance and this is a performance that she goes into some very deep places emotionally I had not seen her explore before she is captivating a truly amazing performance from Scarlett that will bring you to tears.
Adam Driver : Driver gives his best performance Of his career as well as he shows sides to him that are explosive and powerful! Driver has been an actor for a while but when he first started out didn’t get that noticed he did small parts in movies like the F word and then the show Girls then eventually Star Wars and I’m glad he’s getting more roles as he’s a truly great actor with such a great range and here he shows his dramatic strengths so beautifully and brilliantly. As here he plays the father and husband that is scratching and clawing his way just to get custody of his kid and be able to see his kid and his character arc compared to Scarlett is so different and that’s also what I love is their personalities and lifestyles are so different and so they make for very different kind of performances where Adam Driver plays this role in such an emotionally reserved way that when he does show anger it’ll be in little bursts but their is one scene in particular that him and Scarlett have a argument and wow all I can say is wow the acting by both of them in that scene is powerful heartbreaking and so freaking compelling to watch. What I find so interesting about Adam’s take on the character is he seems well adjusted and seems to be taking things fine on the outside but on the inside he’s absolutely devastated and heartbroken and theirs a part in the film that involves him and his kid going out on Halloween that was one of the most emotionally heartbreaking scenes I’ve seen in a film between a father and a son as Adam can say so much by saying so little and being so emotional with just his eyes and it’s powerful but then when he talks you can hear the sheer passion as well and when he’s angry you feel the frustration and it seems so natural and real. He takes this role head on and shows the emotional pain he goes through and the layers of emotion he shows is staggering as he peels so many layers back of not just his character but what he can deliver emotionally as an actor which he hadn’t seen him explore before. He’s so compelling in this film and you can see that the father is trying to make things work and he cares so much about his kid that all he wants is his son to be happy and Adam brings that sad desperation that makes you want to just cry for him as he can’t express it as he has to be strong and it’s so well executed by Adam it’s a performance that will truly amaze you Adam Driver gives an emotionally honest and raw performance that you’ll be heartbroken but amazed by all at once.
Noah Baumbach : Noah has crafted a beautiful film! Noah brings one of the most honest, heartbreaking and realistic depictions of a couple going through a divorce that I’ve ever seen! As he writes and directs this film so masterfully in a way that shows the two different perspectives of these parents trying to do this divorce in a way that doesn’t emotionally hurt their kid and it’s so powerful as the film deals with all these themes of marriage and obviously divorce and sadness and desperation theirs so much he tackles that is so well executed as when I say he shows the perspectives of these two no I really mean that as it never feels one sided. You’ll see one half with Adam’s character and then the next we’ll see how Scarlett’s character is dealing with it on her end it’s such a interesting approach to the story. Also usually you have a lot of arguing and screaming in films about divorce but here their isn’t that actually theirs only one scene where they have this massive argument but for the rest of the film their very civil to one another and try to be kind to one another for their kid and I loved that as it’s such a different approach to a story like this that I had ever seen. Noah never makes someone feel like the villain he shows the sadness and the emotional pain on both sides and how it effected them both and we see the emotional connection they had to what they now don’t have and it was such a powerfully and brilliantly written and directed film that he also got outstanding performances from his two lead actors and he really brings a realistic tone to the film that in a way feels like your intruding as it feels so authentic to how things would unfold and Noah shows the process of going trough a divorce but also the strain it takes on you emotionally as he shows how some people don’t want lawyers as when you do it without you can be clear to the person of how you want to solve it and when you involve lawyers it could get messy as they are the ones talking for you and he shows that message as well through this film it’s just such a well written story that really fleshed out the characters so well you understood everyone in the story and he really gets you hooked the moment it starts to the very end. Overall Noah Baumbach delivers a truly terrific piece of direction and also incredible writing as well.
