Movie Review : Knives Out

Knives Out
This is a thrilling, well acted, well written and all around incredible mystery film that is perfectly written directed and crafted by Rian Johnson. This film feels and is styled like an old fashioned whodunnit murder mystery that brings together a great cast that all give solid performances. This film is very much like the title it’s sharp like a blade and keeps twisting and turning until the very end.

Firstly, The tone and style brought to this film is so beautifully crafted. What makes this film really stand out from your average murder mystery is the writing and the tone that is set as yes it plays out as an old fashioned whodunnit murder mystery the film keeps you questioning every single person and when you think you know what the outcome is they pull a twist that you don’t see coming. Rian sets up the characters with great soul and intrigue and then builds upon it and once you meet every single character of this film you become intrigued instantly by the great characters that are introduced to you and then once he makes them all questionable you hold your breath the entire time and don’t know who to trust. As he was able to build this from the ground up he gets you to gain your trust and interest in the characters he wants you to put your trust in and the ones he thinks is shady makes you question their motives but that’s how he baits you in he makes you think something is one thing and then goes a total different direction. I am truly impressed by Rian as he didn’t make the twist ending feel predictable but rather well set up with such great backing to make it seem believable. Their hasn’t been a murder mystery film like this that has hooked my attention in a very long time it very much feels like a Hitchcock thriller that would of come out in the 1950’s or 1960’s he crafted these characters and the twists and turns so brilliantly.

Secondly, The entire cast is incredible you have Micheal Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Chris Evans,  Daniel Craig and Toni Collette all of whom all give tremendous work in the film as the entire cast give such performance of style and real intrigue as each character is so different then the other and they all bring a specific quality and charm to them that makes them so damn compelling to watch even if their so despicable the cast all bring their A game to the screen but it is Daniel Craig who steals each frame of this film with his witty humour and great charm that wowed me and gave a compelling performance as the Detective on the case of this murder. The whole cast give such solid performances and all of them shine giving very specific and different kinds of executions on their characters that made them so fun to watch onscreen especially Chris Evans who gives a performance that is hilariously charming but also so different then what we have ever seen him do before. A solid cast all with great solid performances.

Lastly, Knives Out stands out as one of the best Murder Mystery films I’ve seen in a very long time from Rian Johnson’s greatly crafted story that twists and turns in so many different ways that makes you question these well fleshed out characters who are all acted brilliantly by the entire cast the film will shock you intrigue and have you talking about long after the film is over Knives Out is a brilliant piece of film that is compelling from the start to the finish.

This film centres on a wealthy family and when their father is found dead the family is brought in for questioning when it is looked at that someone may of murdered him but who they all start to learn that no one is who they seek to be

Rated PG - 13 : for thematic elements including brief violence, some strong language, sexual references, and drug material

Daniel Craig : Craig gives another high wired stylistic performance that captures your attention and is a scene stealing performance that is truly terrific. Craig has more recently been really showing what he’s more capable of as I love him as James Bond he’s capable of doing so much more then that an action hero as he has proven in recent years that he has a great range as an actor that can adapt and play any role that comes his way with his recent work in the comedy heist film Logan Lucky where he showed off his comedic range showed a lot of people he can be more then just Bond. Here he plays another high wired character with such charm and wit that the moment he comes onscreen your instantly drawn to him as he plays this southern detective on the case. Craig brings this very old fashioned detective feel to the character who has great passion and when he finds a clue to help solving this very complicated puzzle that is this case he runs with it and becomes so obsessed to it as he brings the sparkling dialogue that Rian wrote for him to great life as it just leaps off the page and off his tongue so brilliantly as you can tell he’s having great fun with this role but he adapts his voice so greatly for the role and brings this very likeable but also mysterious feel to the character that has you Interested but also cautious if he may even be questionable on the case so Craig plays it as if he’s just the detective solving this case but also brings that mysterious feel that the character has to his advantage as he makes him feel shady at some parts that makes you question your trust In him. He’s so well written by Rian and so complex Craig takes this character head on and really embraces ounce of the character and breaths such life to him in the way he speaks to how he holds a cigarette and how he walks he truly brings this small quirks and qualities to the character that makes him so vibrant as well as bringing this emotional range that is mysterious but also witty and funny as he can be very dry with humour with great humour at times without trying to be funny and working so well for comedic purpose to then showing such passion to this case in great serious intense emotion that is truly dazzling to watch. This is one of my favourite performances I’ve seen of Daniel Craig’s as it’s such a different kind of role we haven’t seen from him before that is so intriguing to watch as Daniel storms into each scene with charismatic energy that just wows you he gives a charming and layered performance your pulled into within the first time you see him Craig is truly terrific in this film.

Rian Johnson : Ryan delivers another astonishing film with sharp writing and a incredible twist of a story! I spoke about earlier Rian has given us a great whodunnit murder mystery film that feels like an old fashioned crime film that feels like it could of come out in the 1950’s or early 1960’s as I say their is so Many murder mysteries that come out but it is hard to stick the landing as you can’t make it so obvious who the killer is by the beginning or the twist and surprise is no longer a surprise if it is so obvious but Rian goes a route that makes his stand out as he layers it in detail and gets you to invest and trust these characters and then in the blink of an eye get you to question your belief in them and the way he is able to achieve such brilliant narrative thinking is incredible as it is so complex as he makes each character likeable to an extent but oh so compelling to watch and then show an aspect to them to find shady and thats the hook he makes everyone a suspect but all of them have actual strong motives to why they would be somehow linked to the Murder so you are on the edge of your seat the entire time while also enjoying the incredible strong performances from the entire cast involved and you can’t keep your eyes off the screen as he keeps drawing you in and then shocks you and Ryan has written and directed this film so sharply and so greatly as I think it is one of his best directed and written films yet as it is a great homage to the genre itself but while not leaning on it to become style rather then substance he never gets swept up in the style of it and made sure he had a strong narrative with great detail and then shows the great style with the very witty dialogue woven around it. The film is funny but also emotional at times and also dark and compelling he really has done a truly fantastic job at brining this story to life with great solid writing and strong direction that makes this one of the best murder mystery whodunnit films I have seen in a very long time with a truly well shaped story that Ryan tells beautifully.
