Movie Review : Zombieland Double Tap
Zombieland Double Tap
This film is a blast! This was worth the 10 year wait for the follow up to the first film that was one of the best films of 2009. The film doubles down on the zombie kills and really expands upon its world without loosing the heart soul and humour that made the first one so memorable. The film was such a blast I’ll be using that word a lot in this review but it’s because it is the moment the film starts your in for such a treat. As this film doesn’t take itself to seriously and I love that as it’s so smartly written and directed it’s so stylistic and very violent too but the violence is brought by the laughs and it’s just so well executed bringing a very worthy companion next to the first film as a truly enjoyable sequel.
This film took a long time to come out as the first one came out in 2009 so it’s been a while since we’ve seen these characters and obviously when I saw the film way back in 2009 everyone myself included all wanted a follow up as the characters were so well written and the concept was so unique and it was an experience I’d want to have again with those characters. Now I’ve been following the development of this sequel for a very long time and when the first film was made everyone besides woody Harrelson were not known at the time and since then the entire cast has skyrocketed in fame and so when I first saw the trailer I was nervous to see if this film would be able to bring the magic that the first film captured so well. Now I’m glad to say this film isn’t a cash grab they took the time to come up with a solid script and then stylistic look of what the sequel would be and that approach was so well done by the writers as they have this very meta way at writing humour that shined so well in the first film and does once again here. I respect the fact that they wanted to make sure the story was as good as the first and it is a very enjoyable worthy sequel and for that it was well worth the wait. As this film like i mentioned has the great humour jaw dropping zombie kills and great heart and the emotional punch here was so well done in a way that you don’t expect it to hit you as hard as it does but the levels of complexity here is amazing.
Firstly, The performances are all fantastic! The entire cast once again all show up and give their all but the standout again has to be Woody Harrelson as he brought such a scene stealing approach to that character in the first film and does so again here as well as some of the new characters we are introduced to are also great here. The other standout being Zoey Deutch who gives one of the most hilarious supporting comedic performances I’ve seen all year she really chews up the scenery and makes you laugh every minute. The entire cast is fantastic as they really have this great chemistry onscreen that makes you believe they are this family for one another and all of them contribute greatly to the film.
Secondly, Lastly, Zombieland 2 Double Tap isn’t a cash grab sequel but rather a solid story with great heart humour and emotion that expands upon the world with new characters and new situations that the characters we come to love get into. It brings the stylistic fun that the first film brought but this time doubles it in such great ways. It was a blast from start to finish Zombieland 2 Double Tap is one of the best horror comedy sequels ever and a great time to be had that I can’t wait to experience again.
This film picks up where we last saw these characters and this time they have grown into quite the family and when Little Rock sets off on her own the gang go all the way to find her and encounter flesh eating zombies on their way.
Rated R : for bloody violence, language throughout, some drug and sexual content
Woody Harrelson : Harrelson gives another great outing as the gun slinging sharp shooter of Zombieland. He brings a very specific kind of energy that is needed to bring this over the top character to life as what is so great about all the characters in this franchise is their never one note characters their three dimensional characters with great depth to them and that’s what makes them so enjoyable And here Woody brings a more emotional depth to him that he showed in the first film but is more noticeable here as he takes on this time around since the gang has been together for so long he’s now acted as a father type kind of role for the group and is massively attached to Little Rock as he treats her like his own daughter which was something those two characters came to explore back in the first film is this father daughter bond and here it’s full throttle. Their is a entire subplot committed to their relationship towards one another and it is so cute to watch as Woody yea he’s funny in the film and is hilarious to watch giving great genuine laughs with either dry humour or over the top hilarious comedy that Both lands in such amazing fashion. But on the other hand he delves into aspects of the character we didn’t get the first time around his character arc is really explored here more even when we thought the first film explored as much as we could get already the follow up shows him shed more of his layers back and show a great deal of smaller more emotional moments that are as impactful as the comedic moments. And Woody brings the range required to pull it off so effortlessly as this character he plays is so cartoony and side splitting hilarious that knows right off the bat what is needed to bring this character to life and this time around he delivers on the laughs sure but also new sides to the character we haven’t yet seen and he brings the dialogue to life with his great sheer hilarious commitment to the character. As he can be so emotive with just his eyes and show great dry humour but also emotional pain just through his eyes and it’s impressive to watch such a layered comedic performance at hand. You couldn’t take your eyes off him in the first film and here he does it once again Harrelson delivers a solid comedic performance with great emotional heart shown throughout it.
Zoey Deutch : Zoey gives one of the most hilarious performances I’ve seen all year! Zoey’s character in this film is a new character we get introduced too very early on into the story and she plays this valley girl with very little thinking power. Now sure it can be perceived as a stereotype but she does it in such good taste but wow does she play up that character to full capacity as the moment we see her you admire the sheer serious commitment she’s taking to the character as she easily could of just brought a passable performance as a Valley Girl character in the Zombie apocalypse but no she fully embraces the character from head to toe and goes for it with a hilarious performance that kept me laughing every moment she was on screen. She dressed the Part had the right accent needed for it and also just the smaller aspects of it too like how she walked and would use her hand gestures. She made sure that every aspect was brought to the role and I love the attention to detail as when you see her she’s so so not sharp to say in the kindest way possible but she’s so hilariously optimistic and you can’t help but love her and get attached to her character. As Zoey brings her dialogue to life with such a hilarious tone to her voice that made for great comedic moments and at the same time you can’t look away from her it’s a role so totally different then I’ve seen Zoey play in the past and in many ways it’s a incredible performance as she’s never given such a head deep committed comedic performance like this before and she just soaks up the scenes she’s in and she definitely shows her comedic strength massively as I’ve never seen Zoey explore an aspect of her range comedically like this before and it impressed the hell out of me I hope going forward she does more comedic roles as she was amazing here giving one of the funniest supporting performances of the year.
Ruben Fleischer : Ruben gives a greatly directed film here once again! He brought this franchise to amazing life back in 2009 with one of the most unique and original films in a very long time for the horror genre. Here he delivers what he gave us with the first film as he doesn’t just plaster a play by play of the first film but really took time to make sure that the story for the follow up was worth telling as he brings the heart and soul that the first film had. This time he takes the chance to expand upon the world with new rules and also new characters and new qualities to the zombies he raises the stakes while giving the hilarious dark comedy we love while giving an emotional punch to the film that was so well suited within the story. Ruben Knows time has passed since the first film and he doesn’t shy away from that which I loved he knows their older and embraces that and doubles down with the zombie violence giving some truly jaw dropping action sequences while also having time to show the smaller moments so he can flesh the characters out more and explore aspects to them we may not of seen the first time around and he made this film a blast from start to finish. As he didn’t just retell the same story again but rather come up with a solid story that brings the character into new situations and evolves them while still kicking ass and having a great time watching it and Ruben once again delivers and shows that you can create a truly solid horror comedy that may even surpass the first film with great heart soul and storytelling.
