Movie Review : The Adams Family (2019)

The Adams Family (2019)
This is such a bland boring disappointment! This film was painfully slow I had to use every muscle in my body to finish this film as yes it’s that bad. The film brings a disrespectful reboot to the legacy of the Adams Family legacy as I hoped this film at the bare minimum would be ok and slightly entertaining but it couldn’t even achieve that. As the film lacks any sense of depth or heart that the first two films captured so beautifully this just feels embarrassing to watch unfold onscreen.

First off, I want to say before I go into my problems I had with the film that I really did want to enjoy this film because it seemed like a ok animated adaptation of these characters but it’s just awful. This film’s main issue I had was it didn’t have a plot and what I mean by that is their isn’t a clear idea of what the main narrative was until the last 20 minutes and I know that the Adams Family is known for getting into funny antics and that’s the point the 90’s  films did that yes but it also was able to bring together a form of a plot though with silly antics surrounding it and that’s what this film lacks is the story is non existent it’s just painfully unfunny moments pieced together in a 90 minute film. The film just didn’t go anywhere and it made me so bored as their was nothing to grapple onto.

The cast was so underused! Oscar Isaac And Charlize Theron are amazing stars but their ability to showcase their talent wasn’t fully brought to the screen so they could showcase their ability to their full capacity. Since the Screenplay is so poorly written I respect that the voice cast tried their absolute best to try and pull something good out of it as the only real enjoyable actor in the film is Oscar Isaac as he brought a great Entertaining comedic performance to the film that made it somewhat enjoyable at times. But then their was their portrayal of Wednesday who is so beloved by so many people and here she is a shell of a character as she usually is very dark and has very very dark dry humour and they tone her character down massively which is so disrespectful to the legacy of the character and it doesn’t even feel like the real character since they are toned down it feels like a kid PG version that plays it too safe. But the voice cast brought to this film was good just not used to their full capability.

Now my last gripe with the film was that it wasn’t even remotely close to what the 90’s movies were. The Adams Family is a dark stylish funny franchise people have come to love myself included and so when I saw this film I sat in horror that it didn’t even feel at all like what we had come to love about the characters. As it felt more like a spoof on the characters as since this film is made in the political climate of 2019 the writers didn’t want to offend anyone with any potential offensive jokes and I’m not saying you need to insult people with jokes but you should be able to have creative freedom without being nervous of what others will think of your jokes as what made the Adams Family films so good was that it actually went out of its way to be different and not being afraid to be dark at times with great dark comedy and it worked and sure that film was PG - 13 but most of the jokes you could fit into a PG rating and this film plays it way to safe and doesn’t even feel like what we had come to like about this loveable family instead it felt like a sanitized stripped down version of the characters resulted to cheap laughs to keep kids attention spans for 15 minutes no longer and no less.

Lastly, The Adams Family (2019) film had a promising beginning that quickly goes off course and crashes and burns. The film becomes hilarious for all the wrong reasons and is one of the most forgettable bland and overall boring films of the year that spits in the face of its legacy of its characters and its fans this film dose not even try to do anything new or interesting but rather play it safe and result in cheap laughs this film should of just been put on television it felt more like a late night b rated kids film rather then what fans wanted!

This film tells the story of an unusual family that lives in an abandoned asylum and are very dark but very loveable and get into funny situations when society tries to adjust to them.

Rated PG : for Macabre and suggestive humour, and some action

Oscar Isaac : Oscar tries his absolute hardest and Buddy I am sorry that you had to carry this film your shoulders must be sore! Oscar Isaac is a multi talented actor that has been giving us solid work for years and here he gives us his attempt at a big property franchise with a animated spin on it. Now the film lacks any depth or interest but Oscar Tries his absolute hardest to muster something entertaining with his performance in this horrendous film! Oscar brings such a specific energy that Is required to this role and I will be honest I think he was fantastic. Yes this film is a slog but Issac dose not phone in his performance he commits fully to this very over the top and loud character and it was fun to watch. Oscar gives a great portrayal to the madness that is Gomez Adams he really broadens his range and shows sides to him we had not seen before. He really gets into the role and has an absolute blast and gives hilarious comedic moments that are greatly timed by him and executed as well. He knows what kind of stylistic performance was needed to bring to this film and he he just lets loose and shows what strength he has as a comedic actor with very over the top emotional delivery which he does and it is such fun to watch as he breaths life into this very bland film and makes it somewhat watchable. Its sad to see that he isn’t fully Brought to the extent of his powers which we all know he is capable of but the director did a horrible job at giving him direction so Issac very much had to find creative ways and unique ways to draw us in with his performance and because he is talented and can tackle any genre that is why his performance works its because Oscar stepped up to the challenge of taking on this beloved character and I can say his performance really worked here and it was really fun to watch Oscar Issac gives a fun performance in a bad film.

Conrad Vernon & Greg Tiernan : From the director of Shrek 2 and the incredible mind behind Sausage Party  wow what a duo and what a waste of talent! These filmmakers did a horrendous job at brining this film to life. They had such a terrible take on these beloved characters as it felt like a hollow lifeless story with no actual narrative just ridiculous cheap situations for them to get into and I felt no spark of creativity at all from these two. It felt like a by the numbers animated film that sanitized the hell out of the material in the film as it dose not even keep the tone that the franchise is which is dark comedy and Greg and Conrad terribly underused their cast massively they all deserved better as this film was painstakingly slow and very awkward and I say that as the jokes didn’t land at all they felt cringe worthy and very bad none landed and I was never invested into what they call a story as it felt like they just insulted the fans of this franchise and totally insults the legacy of this beloved franchise with this terrible animated film that I won’t be surprised will be in the five dollar bin in the next year or two these directors did a horrible horrible job at brining this beloved family back to the screen. They never committed to one idea or one tone which made the film feel so messy and a bland film with the very slowly paced and uninteresting story.
