Movie Review : El Camino

El Camino
This film is a incredible satisfying end to the Breaking Bad Story! Vince Gilligan has definitely lived up to the massive legacy he has created that is Breaking Bad the film is phenomenally well acted by Aaron Paul as he shows the emotional scars that have followed him from the events that happened. The film feels very much like two episodes of the show and to some it could be too slow for people because the pace is slow and the thing is I think it worked to its benefit here. As it’s not a fast paced film it takes it times and builds the tension up overtime. Their is not much talking when your following Jesse around and I love that as you can tell so much even without words spoken and Aaron engages you into the story from his great performance and the story that is continuing  from when we saw him last in the finale of the show.

Aaron gives a heartbreaking and emotionally charged performance as Jesse Pinkman. Aaron approaches the fan favourite character of the show and brings him into territory that we hadn’t seen before. We’ve seen him in emotional pain and truly heartbroken but what he shows here is the after effect of how all of it affected him and how absolutely shattered he is now and the sheer fun and joy has totally left him and he is changed from all of what he’s been through and we see the effect it’s had on him when he is on the run throughout the film as Aaron takes the character to new heights we hadn’t thought possible he elevated the character and his performance in a truly brilliant performance. Bryan Cranston pops up in the film as well and contributes a haunting performance that will break your heart he’s not in the film for long he’s only in one scene  but for what he has he brings a performance that makes you smile and breaks your heart. Everyone else as well were incredible Charles Baker’s performance as Skinny Peate also brings great complexity to his character in ways he hasn’t done before that was a pleasant surprise. Everyone really gives solid work that is fantastically done by the entire cast in such realistic emotional honesty.

This film is a truly epic conclusion to one of the greatest television shows and three part story’s ever from any medium. We get a heartbreaking next level performance from Aaron Paul as well as great supporting performances from everyone involved as the film never slows down it engages you from the moment it starts until the credits roll and it’s full of pulse pounding tension and heartbreaking emotion El Camino gives a great ending to this epic story that I’ll want to watch it again again and again El Camino is a truly incredible piece of film and one of the years best films.

This film picks up straight after the events of the series finale of breaking bad and follows Jesse on the run from the authorities and trying to find piece within himself while trying to mend the emotional scars that he’s been slashed with.

Rated R : Violence throughout, Language, Drug use

Aaron Paul : Aaron Paul gives a depth to Jesse that had yet to be explored and wow was it incredible to witness. Aaron is so underrated as an actor he has had zero acting classes and can deliver such hard hitting emotion to a scene it’s amazing and just when i thought by the end of Breaking Bad that he had explored everything he can with that character he brings it up a notch and shows some of the most heartbreaking moments Jesse has ever been through period. The first 20 minutes of the film is one of the most jaw dropping moments I’ve seen of Aaron’s portrayal of the character as he shows a side to him that is emotionally quite but so emotive with his body language and eyes he Almost made me break into tears without a word as by this point he knows the character inside and out and when we see him beyond the point of broken but emotionally shattered and torn apart in ways I didn’t think was possible to see him in it truly stunned me as he carry’s this weight to his body that you can feel that he’s been through hell and Back emotionally because he has and he is so messed up emotionally from what he’s been through that here we see that full throttle and it’s at times hard to watch as Aaron is pouring every once of him into this final performance of this character. He brings the character to such new heights I loved that even though Aaron could of just done what he already did and just redo some of the stuff he did in the show which he doesn’t he finds new angles and new ways of exploring the character and showing new sides to him and I freaking love that. He has a few moments of where you can laugh and he can be very very dry with his humour but it’s their and their are slivers of moments that you can laugh at and he plans those so well and times it perfectly as well he’s so great with his range and timing of emotion. His performance in this film is like if someone took a hammer to glass and shattered the crap out of it the glass is Jesse and the hammer is the trauma he’s been through it’s a sensational performance that is heartbreaking but also satisfying as he gives a great closing performance to this character that makes you feel that he got the ending he deserves and he does Aaron Paul gives a masterful performance of Jesse Pinkman and a true tour de force performance.

Bryan Cranston : Now I would say this is a spoiler but we all know that you can’t have a breaking bad film without Heisenberg. Bryan Cranston is featured in this film for a scene and even though it’s a two or three minute scene it has a very lasting impact and brings such a heavy amount of emotion to the scene that hits you like a ton of bricks. As the flashback is a moment I think back in season two as it’s before things got really bleak for those characters so their is a bit of happiness in the scene but us the audience knows what’s to come and it’s sad because we know the outcome of the arc that Walter has and to even see him for a scene meant so much to me a fan but it wasn’t just put in their for fan service it was put in their to bring a emotional weight of a character that we miss dearly. And what could of been if things had turned out differently for that character and Bryan brings a great dad like speech to Jesse that is part humorous sure but theirs a emotional honesty and truth to what he’s saying. As Bryan tones the characters toughness down and shows the more vulnerable side that Walt had for Jesse and it’s a great moment of banter between the two but it’s Bryan’s great emotional approach to the scene that made it the more heartbreaking it’s the pure real emotion behind his eyes and his face on top of how he delivers his dialogue he just brings it to such life and even though it’s a short scene he packs a lot of emotional punch in those three minutes and that’s why I love Cranston because even if the scene he is in is short he’ll make sure he brings his all to it so he can shine as bright as possible and he does it’s a great supporting performance as Mr White and it made me smile with lee but cry in heartbreak Bryan gives a great performance as Walter one last time.

Vince Gilligan : Vince Gilligan crafted a great compelling epic conclusion to this story in such a satisfying way. When I heard that their was going to be a breaking bad film oh I was nervous because breaking bad to me is the greatest television show of all time it’s just so perfect and it did what so few shows have done which is craft a brilliant show from beginning to end and on top of that then revisit that show and do a prequel based off one of its characters Saul Goodman. So hearing after all that great stuff we would be getting a film sure I was excited but nervous because if it didn’t turn out good it would leave a bad taste in fans mouths as the legacy of that show is held to such a high standard and for good reason and the film wraps up the unfinished story arc of Jesse Pinkman which was left open ended at the end of the series finale but now since we have the film we get closure of where the character goes. It truly is one of the greatest franchises as you have Better call Saul as the beginning then Breaking Bad as the middle part of the story and El Camino as the aftermath of the events of breaking bad it’s a perfect three story arc. Vince did such a great job because since I love Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad so much I knew he would only go back to those characters again If he had a strong story worth telling and he did and wow was it good. He was able to explore some aspects of Jesse we had not seen before and really give a great and satisfying closing arc to a fantastic character we have come to love and Vince writes and directs this film with such incredible execution as he created some incredibly tense moments that keep you on edge and then has some truly great emotional moments that will make you melt. He truly is one of the greatest writers/directors ever not just for television but in general the man is a genius and he proves it here once more as he explores aspects of the world and of the characters that he expands on while tying up loose ends or questions we didn’t get answers to are answered here and it’s so well done and shaped by Vince.

The Cinematography : The camerawork is incredible! I always have said that Breaking Bad is the best shot show ever made as the Cinematography on that show felt so cinematic and that same feel is here as well. The films cinematographer finds new ways of how to express an emotional driven scene in such creative and expressive ways but also be able to show such amazing scope of the locations  and it’s so beautiful it looks like you can use some of these shots as paintings it’s gorgeous in its camera work and it’s also able to be so well done when it’s trying to build a tense moment so well crafted and well shot.

The Score : Dave Porter is a mastermind as he composed the entire breaking bad series and I always would comment on how Beautiful the show sounded and he brings that here once again. He has this really creative way at using the instruments in a way that feels different in sound but also refreshing because his style of music is unlike anything I’ve heard from a composer he can go from heavy sounds to very simple and clam sounds and it fits the tone and emotion of the scene so perfectly and he knocks it out of the park in every frame of this film it’s so beautiful to listen to with the gorgeous Cinematography.
