Movie Review : Parasite
Parasite
This film is beautifully done by Bong Joon - ho who captures one of the most original and captivating films of the year. The critically acclaimed filmmaker gave us Okja a few years back which was an original and emotional take on the food industry and treatment of animals. Now this Time around he captures and tells the story of social class and the struggles of it and it’s so amazingly told by him. The film is hilarious, shocking and incredibly acted by the cast Parasite grabbed my attention by the beginning and didn’t let go as it will stay with you long after it’s over as it really makes you think.
Firstly, The film brings one of the most thought provoking and truly compelling original stories I’ve seen all year! As I mentioned this film tells the story of social stratification as the film delves deep into that theme in such a interesting way as the film shows us this story from a very poor family’s perspective and how the want to live like the high and wealthy so they all conduct a plan to find a way into their home by employing themselves positions to work for the family and one by one they do just that and by the middle of the film you have the entire family working for this family without them evening thinking about it and that’s incredibly unsettling how easy they were able to do it but so compelling from a narrative stand point. As I’ve not seen such a strong and layered original indie film like this since BookSmart this year. What also grabbed my attention is its multi layered and complex narrative that makes the smallest details so important so you have to be paying attention to everything as later on it’ll come back to be some importance and I love that as the film also tone wise goes through so much as the first fifteen minutes we’re actually very funny and then the film shifts for drama heavy material and by the end it feels like a full fledged thriller and the sheer brilliant ability to be able to shift through such tones so effortlessly was so well done. This film has one of the most truly incredible original stories I’ve seen this year it’s outstanding.
Secondly, The performances from the entire cast was amazing! The film follows this family and so within seconds your intrigued as the film is able to get you invested so quickly by the uniqueness of each individual character and their personalities but also because of the way the actors are playing them onscreen. The family dynamic they show onscreen seemed so natural and authentic I truly believed they were a real family as the chemistry was just so natural. The standout for me had to be Park So - Dam who plays the daughter she brings a very specific kind of energy to the character as she can be hilarious in moments and then terrifyingly unpredictable the next and her emotional range and character arc in this film was incredible. The entire cast in this film also give top notch emotionally effective performances that hit you to the core.
Lastly, Parasite is one of the years best films as Bong Joon - Ho has once again outdone himself and crafted a thought provoking film that discusses very heavy social themes while also shifting the narrative through such layered tones all at the while of telling a story that gets you engaged right away. From its shocking and beautifully structured story to its amazing performances from its cast Parasite is one of the most thought provoking and truly compelling films I’ve seen all year this film is astonishing!
This film centres on a poor family that dreams of the high and wealthy life and when their son finds his way to become a tutor for the family he then slowly finds a way do get his entire family employed by the ditch family without them even realizing it.
Rated R : for language, some violence and sexual content
Park So - Dam : Park So - Dam gives a dramatic and hilarious performances that amazed me! She is to me the scene stealer of this film as the moment she appears onscreen she brings her dialogue alive with such style and genuine emotion. For the first 20 minutes of the film she is very humorous and has great moments of comedy as she times it so perfectly as she knows what will work and when is the appropriate time to use humour in a scene and it always landed she also knew when to switch things up and bring the heavy handed emotional hitting moments as well. As she does that so beautifully but what is so great as her layered written character is her sheer ability to be able to bring this sense of unpredictability to the character as for a good chunk of the film for her character specifically she kept me guessing of what she was going to do because she can be like I mentioned humorous sure but she also can be shockingly dark as their were two scenes of massive intensity shown by her as she revels something unsettling to the mother and the scene is played very serious and she provides the emotional dramatic muscle needed for that scene and she knows it out of the park as from the sheer emotion in her eyes to the way she delivered her dialogue she captured such a strong wielded emotionally captivating performance of such great layered magnitude. She brings the humour, the darkness the dramatic depth and she grabs your attention from the moment she is onscreen as she like I said brings a great depth of emotion as for the emotional aspects she can be on the brink of breaking down into tears but hold it back and her voice would be shaky she just committed so fully to this character which resulted in one of the best supporting performances I have seen this year she brought this character to life with great genuine depth that you can’t look away from she is incredible and I can’t wait to see what she does next as she amazed me with her terrific work here Park So - Dam gives a emotionally layered performance of greatness that dazzle’s you!
Bong Joon Ho : Bong Joon Ho has once crafted another memorable film! He brought us Okja a few years ago that was a social commentary on the food industry and it affected me quite deeply and here he brings once again another effective social commentary film that amazed me. Here he tracks the life of this very poor family that will do anything to be wealthy or in the rich high rolling lifestyle and it is heartbreaking and disturbing all at once. What I love about his approach to the characters was he makes you the audience fall in love with them instantly by their very compelling personalities and he then later on makes it harder and harder to see if you want to continue to root for them as they do start to do questionable things and I love that he was able to also switch through such heavy tones. As life I said it is a social commentary of social class and he shows that for what it is in brutal honesty but he also is able to show so much more then just that he brings quite a good bit of humour to the film as well and is able to smoothly transition through so many layers of tones through this film and make it look effortless. As by the beginning of the film it is a drama and by the end it is a thriller and how he was able to transition it from a drama to a thriller was incredible as he shapes the film beautifully as their are great moments of heartbreak that will make you cry it got me teared up in some parts but their also are moments that will have you on the edge of your seat as he also crafts some of the most tense and nail biting scenes. While also getting great top notch performances from his cast that felt authentic and genuine. He never hits you over the head with the social tones discussed in the film but subtly does that with a very strong and compelling narrative that will have you talking about the film long after the credits roll and he once again has outdone himself as this film is for me his best to date as it makes you laugh and cry and even scared he packs all of this into the film so well and gives another greatly directed film that is truly outstanding.
