Movie Review : Dolemite Is My Name

Dolemite Is My Name
This is one of the funniest feel good  films of the year! Eddie Murphy delivers a return to form performance that will leave you crying of laughter but also emotionally impacted as well. Craig Brewer has crafted a incredible film that tells the hilarious but inspiring story of Rudy Ray Moore and the film’s tackles on some hard hitting issues with great stylistic humour. As the moment it starts you can’t help but have a great time watching this story unfold in front of you. As this film is one of the most hilarious bio pics I’ve ever seen as it is able to show the comedic strength of each actor throughout this film but also knows when to pull back and show the dramatic weight of the subject matter too the tone for this film was perfectly done and really played to the director and the actors strength in amazing ways. This is a film that I want to rewatch the moment it finishes it’s a incredible film with a outstanding telling of Rudy Ray Moore’s story.

Firstly, Eddie Murphy delivers one of his best performances in a very long time! Eddie for the longest time has done these kid friendly films like Daddy Day Care and Meet Dave Which did not utilize his skill to his full potential even though some of those are guilty pleasures. As I think after he did the universally loved film Shrek which went on to become one of the most popular animation franchises that franchise even though it’s a great showcase of his talent that film franchise pigeonholed him to kid friendly films for a very long time until Dreamgirls came along which sure got him some of the best reviews that he had had in a long time but ever since that film he hasn’t had a film that showcases his raw comedic talent like he brought to Beverly Hills Cop and Trading Places And this is a performance that shows his return to his roots and I am so happy to see it. As he hasn’t given a performance like this since his film with Martin Lawrence in the 1990’s called Life and here he brings the stylistic raw humour he’s known for and brings it with such ferocious power and strength but he doesn’t just provide the laughs he also brings the emotional depth required as he is portraying a real life person which he’s never done before onscreen and he plays him as accurate as possible delivering one of the best performances he’s given in years and a true return to form for the comedy legend. All of the other actors in the film also deliver great caliber work Wesley Snipes is also marvellous in the film as well and Da’Vine Randolph gives a incredible dramatic turn as Lady Reed as well as everyone else involved really gave hilarious and great dramatic work no matter how big or small their part was they chewed up the scenery with their great work on this film.

Secondly, The film is a incredible story about the underdog and the misfits. What I mean is that this guy started from scratch he had nothing he was doing whatever he could to get his work known and when you see the sheer passion and the blood sweat and tears he put into his work it’s incredibly inspiring to watch as it shows how he worked his ass off to make his dream a reality and that’s a great underlining tone the film shows is that no matter who you are if you want it bad enough you can make it happen and Dolemite brings a great amount of heart to this film that gets you to root for this guy as it sure plays for the comedic effect most of the time but it also can show a more emotional punch to the story as well that is so well shown as yes this film will make you laugh your ass off but it can also impact you emotionally and inspire you to chase your passions as the film is not one layered and I love that I haven’t seen a comedy besides BookSmart this year be so layered for a comedy as it is a comedy drama but wow is the tone set in his film and it’s many underlining tones so well shown that one never feels over used then the other one it’s a perfect balance of comedy and dramatic emotional punch.

Lastly, Dolemite is one of the feel good comedies of the year and a true comeback for Eddie Murphy bringing back his style of humour that he’s known for that we have not seen in a very long time turning in one of his best performances in years with a entire cast that gives solid work as well. This film will make you laugh and maybe even cry and also make you feel inspired Dolemite is a fun time to be had that you’ll want to experience again again and again.

Based on a true story This film centres around Rudy Ray Moore and how he fought to get his work shown and made as a entertainer and to have representation for African American filmmaking.

Rated R :  for violence throughout, language and brief nudity

Eddie Murphy : Murphy delivers his finest comedic performance since life! He brings his raw comedic talent to the screen but also his incredible dramatic strength as well giving a great layered performance from Murphy which we had not seen in a long time. Eddie Plays the infamous Rudy Ray Moore and shockingly this is the first time that Eddie has ever played a real life person before and he brings Rudy to life in his performance fully embracing the role with hilarious commitment. In the first half of this film Eddie is able to mix his brand of comedy and drama and mix them both into the same scene and it’s genius and outstanding to watch as he can be giving such great beats of comedy but be able to switch it to dramatic within that same scene and he has this perfect balance of tones shifting through his performance as Eddie transforms into Rudy from head to toe and he takes on the larger then life persona that he was and it was a great vehicle for Eddie’s talent as he brings that dialogue he speaks to great life with even changing his speech to fit how Rudy would talk and he brings this sparkle in his eye as you can tell that Eddie is having a blast with this character and as yes he’s having fun with it he’s being as respectful as possible as he wants to be as accurate to the person as he could and he does a splendid job. As he shows the over the top bombastic loudness of him so well he also can show the smaller more insecure moments of Rudy’s life that he struggled with and Murphy steps up to the plate to deliver some very emotionally hard hitting scenes that are emotionally effective and work due to his delivery and great emotional range as you can tell so much in his eyes and he’s so emotive without having to say anything and I love the subtlety in his performance as he uses that so well sometimes throughout the film. Murphy Delivers a Greatly layered performance showing the highs and lows of Rudy Ray Moore’s life and showing the bigger then life persona but also being able to show his more emotionally vulnerable moments as well and Eddie plays it perfectly crafting one of his best performances in a very long time Eddie is a triumph!

Craig Brewer : Craig delivers a greatly directed film! From the filmmaker of Hustle and Flow he brings another solid film chronicling the life of Rudy Ray Moore and his rise to fame. Craig shows Rudy’s life in such a stylistic and honest way that gets you compelled into the story within seconds when it starts. As he brings the bombastic loud humour that was Rudy Ray Moore but what is the best part was how he got his start and how he hustled and clawed his way to the top to get his name noticed and Craig packs so much layers upon layers in the film as he brings such heart and soul to the film as he doesn’t make it just straight laughs all the way through he knows when to take a break from the laughs and have a emotional scene as well and his attention to knowing when to shift tones was perfectly timed as it had this even balance as well the film has a great showcase of performances from its entire cast as well as a return to form by Murphy at the top of his game in this film. Craig surrounds the film with great humour but also a great dose of inspiration as it’s a story about the underdog and he really gets you engaged in the story by its great style of it all but also the great fun that is to be had in this film he was able to tackle the topics of African American representation in this film and how back in the 1970’s their was a lack of diversity within films and he does touch upon some real heavy issues and he never sugar coats it he shows it truthfully for as honest as possible. While also making this a respectful bio pic of Rudy Ray Moore on top of having fun while serving an emotional punch to the story it’s so layered and so well executed by Craig he once again gives another all around solid directed film.
