Movie Review : Late Night
Late Night
This is such a delightful film! Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling bring such a hilarious and enjoyable duo in this film. It is basically a TV behind the scenes of what the Devil Who Wears Prada did for fashion with Streep. But this film isn’t a rip off at all of that film it reminded me of it this film is very different in its approach to its story compared to Prada. This Film had me smiling all the way through as it was such a well written story with greatly timed comedic moments shown through this film as the film is able to be a great message about never giving up on your dreams and that you can overcome the nay sayers and as well to listen to an outsiders point of view because it might be the best. That is another great thing this film carries is being able to tackle serious themes in a very smart way without it hitting you over the head with it.
First Off, The style of this film is so smartly done! This is a comedy and drama and both styles are evenly balanced through the story as it is able to use its comedy in such a smart and effective way but it dose not rely on it in order to push the narrative forward it pushes the story forward with it’s smart and well crafted story while serving great laughs throughout but at the same time be able to have serious themes that make you think. This film is not a single note film as mentioned it is able to bring the serious discussions to the table without it hitting you over the head and it is all due to the smart writing, terrific direction and performances by its actors as they can at one moment deliver a hilarious scene of comedy that is full of hilarious laughter and then maybe in that same scene tone wise switch things up and go in a dramatic direction which was always perfectly timed. So the Styles and tones brought to the film were so effectively well done and smartly done that I felt I had to talk about it as it did it in such a refreshing way.
The Cast is fantastic! This is such a well brought ensemble of actors in this film! I read that Mindy wrote this film with Emma Thompson in mind and I am so glad she did as the casting could not of been more perfect. As the kind of humour that Mindy wrote for the film fit Emma’s character and personality so perfectly as Emma is a very funny and witty person and she just fit this role amazingly well she gave one of best performances in recent time. Mindy is the co lead in this film as well and gives a fantastically charming and quirky performance that really is entertaining to watch and the entire supporting cast all contribute greatly to the film even if their role was big or small they all gave such a great contribution to the film as the script was already so well polished and perfectly written and to get these top notch performances as well was the cherry on top.
Lastly, Late Night is one of the best feel good films I have seen this year that was such a delight as Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling are a fantastic duo onscreen delivering such amazing chemistry that results in hilarious moments and both give very entertaining performances as well as the supporting cast it is able to balance out the comedy and drama so greatly while also giving you a great message to walk away with while having a great time Late Night is pure fun that should be seen by everyone I highly recommend this film.
This film centres on a new talk show writer who’s approach to this talk show that is on the brink of getting its talk show host replaced but after quickly learning from this new writer ways of to be likeable and mainstream she also learns some important lessons along the way that benefits her personally and professionally
Rated R : for language throughout and some sexual references
Emma Thompson : Thomson gives one of her most fun, witty and all around well crafted performances I have seen in a while! Emma Thompson is one of my favourite actors period she is such a charismatic actor that regardless of what it is I will watch it because of her she is just so damn enjoyable to see onscreen as she always gives it her all. The two time Oscar winning actress delivers one of her best performances I have seen since Saving Mr Banks. Here she plays this very harsh Talk Show Host and when I mean Harsh I mean to her staff specifically the writing staff and in results in very funny moments in the film. As Emma Thompson is already genuinely witty seeing her onscreen in the film she was hilarious as she had such perfect comedic timing of when to be able to say a sarcastic remark or really funny line the joke always landed and had me laughing her timing was perfect and brought such charismatic energy to the role that just makes her so much fun to watch in every frame of this film. With her great comedic chops in the film she also gives some really fantastic depth to her performance as well as their are a great amount of serious and very dramatic heavy moments that are so well shown and acted by Thompson. Emma brings some very heartbreaking moments to this film that is tremendously shown onscreen as their is a moment where she literally is on her knees hugging someone and you can see the tears well up in her eyes and the vulnerability in her voice and the sheer performance she is showcasing in this film is brilliant. As she can be the very witty and sarcastic persona with this character and then the next deliver this powerful emotional punch the next which is also done so beautifully. Emma delivers this two hander performance that is fantastic you also can tell she is having such fun with the role she is playing and once again she crafts another solid performance you can’t take your eyes off of.
Nisha Ganatra : Nisha gives solid direction on this film! Nisha is a filmmaker I am unfamiliar with but who’s work on this film is solid and I will definitely keep an eye out for her on future films and projects. She was able to take the well crafted screenplay of Mindy’s and bring it to life beautifully with such great style and grace. She infuses each frame with such solid humour and also amazing depth while also having conversations about very real topics without it feeling preachy but at the same time making it noticeable. Nisha had the film really work for the fact she made sure the story was solid and then worked everything around that with the layers of the great performances and then the layers of tone and then the depth to top it all off resulting in a well rounded fun film. Nisha was aware of when to also switch things up tone wise and when to pull back as the drama and comedic tones are very visible here and are the driving force of the story in a lot of ways and she was able to know when to move forward with a joke and then when to pull back With a smaller emotional moment that also worked as effective. Overall Nisha did a splendid job at bringing this fantastic story to the screen.
