Movie Review : Hustlers

Hustlers
This is a fantastic film! Hustlers is a crime drama led by a fantastic cast that is brought to life by this shocking true story. Jennifer Lopez gives the performance of her career and Constance Wu also shines as her partner in crime this film is full of twist and turns and isn’t just another crime film it stands outs from its compelling narrative and strongly acted cast that all shine.

First off, yes it is true what people are saying about Lopez’s performance she does dominate this film with her best performance ever giving sides to her we haven’t seen before but she isn’t the lead of this film. Constance Wu is the lead actor of this film and I think she also was as good as Lopez as a lot of people are Familiar with her from her massive success in the recent crazy rich Asians film. And she goes toe to toe with Lopez and gives as well a compelling performance I felt like I had to mention how terrific she was because she is and a lot of people are praising Lopez’s performance but I haven’t heard about Constance Wu’s performance and she deserves praise for her work here as it’s a solid performance as we see her channel things we haven’t seen before. The rest of the cast is also great to but those two are the big standouts. That’s a massive compliment I give this film is that the cast was perfect as each actor was perfect for the role they were given and delivered a great performance and the entire cast all contribute fantastic things to the screen. They are also able to show such great onscreen chemistry that is so greatly shown throughout the film as you really invest into each character and their backstory and it’s all due to the cast and their commitment brought to their characters. So yes the performances are amazing and the cast was perfectly crafted.

Secondly, The film captures your attention the moment it starts as it’s very seductive and sexy that’s the style the frame has to it and what I loved about the film was that at first glance it seems like a buy the numbers dramedy but they really fooled the audience by making them thinking that it was just a one note film and it’s not it’s full of such depth and a very strong narrative that draws the audience in. The film is adapted from an article written about the events of the film and it’s shocking to hear that this is a true story and the film plays out by having someone tell a journalist the events and how they unfolded and the film was so smart in its execution of its story as it would be very seductive with the strip Club scenes then they can be funny the next and then have very emotional and hard hitting scenes as well and I loved the complexity of it the film really does a great job at showing such layers and the highs and lows of this story and telling it as it happened no matter how dark it got they would go their tone wise and I respect that.

Lastly, Hustlers is a great showcase from its actors as the entire cast give great work but the stand outs being Lopez and Wu with a great compelling narrative that is shocking but yet so entertaining to watch Hustlers is a enjoyable film I’d want to see again and again I recommend people check this film out.

This film is based on true events about Strippers who after hitting rock bottom financially take any means necessary even if it means breaking the law

Rated R : nudity  and Language throughout, Drug use

Jennifer Lopez : Lopez delivers a career best performance! Jennifer has been a good Actress but has never really delved into dramatic territory before. I don’t want to insult Jennifer but reason why she may seem amazing in this film for a lot of people is because her past work isn’t exactly great not saying her performance here isn’t great but it definitely is a factor to why it’s because she finally got a good script with a great director and it was something new for her. Adding to that the character you see isn’t the main star of the film Constance Wu is the main star she’s more of a supporting character as she does come in for a good half of the film but she’s not in it as much as people are led to believe she is. Although even though her performance was a supporting character she still shines so well in the film brining great depth and emotional strength to her performance which we had not seen her show ever. She plays this tough stripper but she’s not dumb she’s very smart and knows how to work the customers in a way to get them to work to her favour and she brings a great realistic honesty to her delivery when conveying those lines as she was so committed to every moment of the film she could be so sleek and put together and then just have moments of sheer anger in burst of emotion and Jennifer was more then capable of it and really delivered on all fronts with a very well crafted dramatic turn that is not just a simple character but a character with many layers that sheds a lot of sides which she shows throughout the entire film. The moment she comes onscreen she crackles in amazement as she chews up the scenery with her fantastic onscreen presence and gives a performance and channels sides of her she’s never shown before and I hope she does more dramatic roles like this in the future as she really knocked it out  of the park with her work on this film she shows that with the right script and director she can deliver a performance on the level of Oscar worthy as she certainly does here. Jennifer brings the sweets but also the toughness to the performance that makes it such a compelling character to watch Lopez gives a career best performance that is truly special.

Constance Wu : Wu gives a incredible dramatic performance! Consonance amazed me with her breakout performance in Crazy Rich Asians and here she gives a emotionally charged performance that is amazing to watch unfold onscreen. This in a lot of ways is Constance’s story as we see the story through her eyes and Wu showed us she could do comedy last year and here she shows she can deliver dramatic heavy work and it’s truly fantastic as she has the best character arc of the film as she starts off very innocent and pure and when she’s Introduced to the high life things spiral out of control and she’s able to take command of her greatly written character arc and showcase some of the best moments of the film. She like I said is innocent and you invest in her immediately because she gets you to sympathize with her due to her tough upbringing but as soon as she starts to get more and more into shady lines of work you still root for her because Constance was able to make this character on the page come to life as she brought such a passion and emotional vulnerability to her performance that worked so well onscreen. She can be so charming and full of laughter and then give some truly heartbreaking scenes and it’s because she has such great timing with her emotional range and knows when to pull back and when to go for it as she gives so many layers through the beginning to the end of the film and her character goes on Quite the journey emotionally and comes out of it emotionally battered and Constance took that and really showed it as honestly as she could through great emotional depth and amazing delivery of her dialogue as she really brought a painful emotion to her words and This is unlike anything she’s done before and she’s starting to become one of my favourite actress working as she picks female characters that are strong wielded and I love that and here she shows what she can show dramatically and it’s brilliant as she shows she’s more then capable of doing so as she almost steals the light away from Lopez. She should be getting award consideration for her work in this film as she really is the heart of this film and gives a truly outstanding performance that shouldn’t go unnoticed she is the only character besides Lopez who has the most character backstory and she showed the highs and lows of this persons life as accurate and honestly as she could she was amazing a truly magnificent performance by Constance Wu.

Lorene Scafaria : Lorene gives a greatly directed film that is outstanding! Lorene has given us some of the most enjoyable comedy’s with her great writing and so when I knew she wrote and directed this film I was looking forward to it because she’s such a great screenwriter I was excited what she could bring as a director and she brings such great direction to this crime drama. She didn’t create cookie cutter characters she made them relatable and with greatly fleshed out backstory’s that got you to invest into the characters and root for them even though what the characters are doing are very criminal things. She captures this world that is looked as glamorous which is the stripping life and brings this realistic honesty to it that makes it so compelling to watch as she doesn’t make what these people do at all glamorous when it gets high she shows the highs but when it gets to the lows she shows how low it really got and how dark at times it got and she doesn’t shy away from the more disturbing elements of the story she tells this full on for how it happened as accurate as possible. She marketed this film to seem like it was a cheesy chick flick but it wasn’t it was a fantastic film with great depth that explores this story with emotional honesty and she also captures the sisterhood connection these girls had together so well with the cast in the film as you really bought into their love and care they had for one another. It was well shown as she was able to get amazing performances from the entire cast even if they had a small part everyone contributed greatly to the film and she gave such a stylistic and realistic look to the story that was so well done and so well written as well and it’s all due to Lorene’s writing and direction it’s absolutely fantastic what amazing work from Lorene Scafaria.
