Movie Review : The Happytime Murders

The Happytime Murders
This film is great fun to be had! When I heard the news they were making an R rated raunchy Puppet film I was intrigued as such films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Ted being ridiculous raunchy films that have worked I hoped this film could join that collection.

Now did it work for me? Yes it did and I’ll explain why the film is exactly what I expected it to be and I got exactly what I thought I would a over the top comedy with edgy humour.

A lot of people have been slamming the film calling it a mess and straight up terrible I think that’s a little harsh as their have been a lot more badly made films this year such as A Wrinkle in time and Fifty shades freed. Is this film an amazing film no it’s not but the movie is also not terrible as people are making it out to be. This film is aware of what it is and uses its edgy humour to the one hundredth degree giving great laughs and a fun time to be had for sure.

The great things I enjoyed about this film was it’s edgy humour, the ability to think outside the box and give us a refreshing film with a different take on the Muppets and take it into new territory. People think it’s destroying their childhood but those are the same people that said the same about the last Jedi. But like any film it’s not without flaws the movie has a great deal of issues as well as the pacing could of speeded up at times and the revel at the end to who the antagonist was to me was a little weak and could of been stronger if they chosen a more shocking villain as the person who is shown at the end  was way to predictable and left me underwhelmed on that front. As well the film could of benefited from showing more of the edgy and the world that the muppets were immersed in with the humans and more interactions would of been a lot fun as when it’s shown it was a blast to watch but their was a lack of it but still enjoyable.

Overall this film is a raunchy, shocking and hilarious film that had me laughing to the end. This movie had me stunned and I haven’t had a comedy do that to me in a long time the Happytime Murders isn’t terrible but it’s funny enough to have you glad you saw it.

This film centres around a man named Phil Phillips who is a worn and broken cop after bad things have happened to him but when Puppets start getting killed off and start becoming connected it brings him back on into the field.

Rated R : or strong crude and sexual content and language throughout, and some drug material

Bill Barretta : Bill gives a fantastic performance in this film! This man has worked for the muppets before and given great work before so it came to no surprises when he delivered another solid performance as he knocks it out of the park here. He plays a washed up on the rocks cop who’s really worn and the way he conveys him onscreen though his voice was perfect. He has this grizzle and rugged tone he brought to it that was great and he really had this sadness as well he echos though the character that is heartbreaking and brilliantly done. As well as his ability to be funny but not beat you over the head with it he had great comedic timing and knew when was the best place for a joke and when he gave one it always worked and was so effective. I really bought into his character and got invested into him because of the great voice work at hand and his ability to bring such life to the role and great charm and charisma as well that made it so much fun to watch him onscreen. He as well delivers great moments of emotion too that was very effective and shockingly more emotional then I anticipated but it really jelled perfectly. Overall Bill Delivers a truly solid performance that will have you grinning and laughing.

Brian Henson : The son of Jim Henson has given us this and I am so glad! See I was not offended by his approach to this film as he never gave any of the muppets like Kermit or that batch of characters screen time in this film he wouldn’t tarnish his dads great creation so he just did muppets but not the ones we know but just random ones and I liked that. Also it’s something different that we haven’t seen before layering it with great edgy comedy an outrageous plot that is so hilarious due to the fact it’s taken so seriously that it makes it that much funnier. His ability to balance the crime and comedy aspect in a muppet movie was well done because he gives the gritty and dark tones of a crime film to a muppets film and also injects it with fantastic humour that worked greatly. Their also was this great heart at the centre and he really got you to care for the characters  and just have fun which is what he dose marvellously he just gives great fun onscreen. For him to think outside the box and what I admired most of what he dose here is he never takes the material to seriously he knows it’s edgy and it’s overblown comedy but he embraces that and that’s why his direction was great and the film was great because he was self aware and just tried to do something new. Overall Brian gave a fun hearted look to the muppets in a new light that was well handled great job.
