Movie Review : Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians

This film is one of the years best!
This movie has so much hype and buzz surrounding it that I eventually had to check it out and it was well worth it. The film is outstanding it takes the Romantic comedy genre and flips it on its head and gives a fresh take on it without having to rely on the obvious tropes that most romantic comedy’s carry. This film has a fantastic and strong cast with tremendous talent all giving great work but two standout from the rest Constance Wu and Awkwafina really bringing solid performances that are fantastic highlights of the film.

First Off, This film works greatly on so many levels and I’ll explain why. As a lot of people know this film has been getting massive praise and I didn’t understand why I knew it was a book adaption but that was it but why this film is making such an impact is due to the massive reason that it’s nice that Asian actors are getting work. Their are lots of people I talk to and tell that the Asian culture in film is usually stereotyped or sidelined supporting characters usually in film so they don’t get the representation they deserve most of the time so for Asian culture being embraced and totally celebrated in a film is a great shift that I’m seeing and a great stepping stone to better representation for them and work in general. They play average people and don’t have to be these caricatures that they are usually made out to be that for me I think is a huge reason this film is making such a big splash that it is. On top of the fact that it’s a fantastic fleshing take on the Romantic comedy genre as well.

Secondly, this film goes through so many layers, what I loved so much about this film is how multilayered it was. It isn’t just about this rich man who is bringing his girlfriend home to see his family who’s rich it is so much more it intertwined it with fantastic romance and great comedic moments but then could also get very emotional and dramatic so it was constantly showing new layers of itself throughout the film and I loved that and it excels at it greatly they balance all of it out so well and keep you entertained to the end.

Finally, this film is one of my favourite films of the year it’s just a feel good movie that really stands out from what I’ve seen this year by being so different and fresh in its take on the material at hand. As well as the fantastic surprises and great performances on hand in the film. This film is a fun time to be had and recommend everyone go see this film.

This film centres around a couple and the man’s family whom he takes his girlfriend to meet little dose she know that he lives in a wealthy family

Rated PG - 13 : for some suggestive content and language

Constance Wu : Constance Wu delivers an incredible breakout performance that is captivating from start to finish! She plays this very down to earth girl who just wants to be loved by her boyfriend and everyone to be happy and the way she makes this come across is so pure and genuine she seemed so real onscreen as well she taps into her characters backstory quite a bit to give more context to the character which I loved and resulted in amazing range from her emotionally onscreen. She is stunning and so sweet and beautiful and can be so happy and charming then the next just destroy you with tears from her heartbreaking delivery she was so great giving great lengths of emotion with fantastic layers. I just bought her as this character she seemed like the character and is such a blast when you see her onscreen she lights it up with her fantastic energy injected into the screen and you really notice it. Also she’s very funny to many people aren’t saying how funny she is in the film she has great comic timing and gives some fantastic humorous moments in the film as well and I loved it all. She gives a truly strong performance that truly marvellous and just tremendous to watch Constance is amazing!

Awkwafina : This Actress stole the show for me! Not since DeadPool has a performance made me laugh this much! This woman is an absolute marvel in the film giving the best lines of the film and in such style. She plays the friend of the girlfriend in the film and she’s not a major character in the film she is a Supporting character but wow dose she make the most out of her scenes. When she is onscreen she crackles in amazement with her pitch perfect comedic timing that always landed and had me belly laughing. She just contributed that extra kick of comedy that the film needed and she couldn’t of done it better. She just brings this character to life and you can’t take your eyes off of her she’s just so damn enjoyable to watch onscreen you want to see more. She dominates the screen with this film and I can’t see what she dose next because what she shows of what she’s able to do in this film is amazing. She has this fast talking quick witted way of talking and her style just jelled with the film perfectly and she was just great and I loved every second of her performance here.

John M. Chu : John gives fantastic strong direction here. This man took away all the baggage that came with Romaric comedy’s and just gave it this fresh take on it that was much needed. Not since What If has a Romantic comedy stunned me with its approach. He took the book and gave it also a great adaptation on top of giving the audience a film so If you haven’t read it you can still understand what’s going on and he juggles that greatly. On top of giving the Romaric comedy genre a great new kick that it desperately needed. He shows you don’t need the over the top romance lines to make people like these Romaric comedy’s but root them in reality and make them relatable and give characters dialogue that someone would say. And then the most important he gets you to care about the characters and their motives they are the heart and soul of the film and If you don’t care about them their is a problem but he gets you to love them because their so real and relatable and that’s why it works so well. My last thing I’d say that makes it work is he doesn’t just give the pure icing of the romance but he shows the drama portions of it and doesn’t shy away from it but embraces it and shows layers of the characters with great lengths of emotion that worked so effectively. He just tried something new and I admire that massively about what he dose here is his ability to showcase more then just one key aspect but drama, romance and comedy and mixes them together with this fantastic mix that results in a terrific film. He gives a great well rounded story with fantastic characters solid performances and an all and all enjoyable film to watch. This film worked because also of the man at the helm of it who brought something new and fresh to the table and knocked it out of the park great job John.
