Movie Review : BlacKkKlansman

BlacKkKlansman
This film is outstanding! This film is one of my favourite films of the year, I absolutely loved every minute of it. The film is directed marvellously by Spike Lee and masterfully acted by John Davis Washington and Adam Driver. It delves into some very hard topics and balances them greatly by not sugarcoating the material but being as real and authentic in their portrayal of Racism and many other discussions that are had in this film.

First off, John Davis Washington delivers an astonishing performance in this film. He has been doing work on the small screen with the HBO show Ballers but hasn’t really shown his acting chops on the big screen and he delivers a dominating lead performance here that is truly magnetic. As well Adam Driver is a scene stealing force to be reckoned with as well capturing a compelling supporting performance onscreen. The two of them give great strong performances throughout ontop Of truly fantastic Chemistry shared onscreen.

The acting is terrific but it’s Spike Lee who really is the mater behind it all. Spike Lee shows tremendous talent behind the lens capturing the hardships of the time the film was set in while also discussing some very hard topics which he tackles head on and bringing his style this compelling plot in amazing fashion and truth.

The film showcases themes of racism, police brutality and then the ku Klux Klan so it’s very deep themes and they are handled very delicately but also it doesn’t gloss over the disturbing elements of those themes but shows every side of it no matter how dark it goes it shines a light on it and shows it for what is it and I respect Lee’s approach to it as it’s not a easy subject to take on in any film. The film was such a well done film it’s fantastically acted, well directed and a shocking true story that will keep you entertained to the very end this is truly one of the years best films and I recommend everyone go check it out.

This film centres around a new rookie cop named Ron Stallworth who takes on the Ku Klux Klan by going undercover but they don’t know he’s an African American so he gets a partner to impersonate him and get information from them and bring it back to Ron so they can take them down

Rated R : for language throughout, including racial epithets, and for disturbing/violent material and some sexual references

John Davis Washington : John delivers a electric performance in this film! This man has been giving great solid work on Ballers for a while now but never really has shown his acting talents on the big screen and after seeing what he dose here I can’t wait to see what he has lined up next because John is incredibly talented. He plays the centre role of a rookie cop wanting to infiltrate the KKK and he brings such a charismatic energy to the role that you can’t look away from. Davis proves he can give a fantastic lead performance as this film shows it greatly. He could be sitting or standing in a corner and even without dialogue just looking in his eyes he can be so emotive with just his face and then the next he can be charming, then be totally full of rage he dose it all and shows fantastic depth and layers not only to the character but to his performance. I was presently surprised by his performance because I thought he was going to play it as a very charming guy but he brings a powerful punch of emotion to it that really is fantastic. Every word he utters he makes you believe is genuine with great delivery. He just chews up the scenes he’s in with his amazing approach to the character. Theirs times when he is trying to flirt it up with this girl and then he’s full of range and goes off into a rant because of what he believes is right and the amount of passion and emotion captured onscreen by him is terrific. He shows up and gives his absolute best showing he’s a force to be reckoned with. Overall John Davis Washington proves he can deliver lead roles and wow dose he ever shine in this film a truly outstanding performance by Washington.

Adam Driver : Adam gives a career’s best performance! Driver has proven he can tackle drama in films like this is where I leave you and even in Star Wars. He’s shown time and time again he can showcase emotion and powerful performances no matter what the film is and here he knocks it straight out of the park with his supporting turn in this film. He plays the partner to John Davis Washington who has to impersonate him and infiltrate the KKK and not get caught undercover. Driver brings him to life onscreen with such a real and powerful approach. The detective he plays is Jewish and theirs many times in the film where his character hears terrible slurs about it and he can’t let it bother him as he’s undercover but Driver has such a powerful emotional range you can see just from his face the impact the words he hears has on him and you can tell just from his face and that’s incredible. He also at first glance doesn’t invest or believe much about this case but by the end of it he is neck deep into this investigation and you can tell by the fantastic sheer raw emotion shown by driver throughout the film. And the way he delivers his dialogue is incredible he springs them to life and makes this character look and feel so lived in. You can’t take your eyes off of him he captures the essence of a man who’s totally terrified by the very chance he could be caught but also wanting to do the right thing and Driver knocks it out of the park with his multi layered performance that is the best he’s ever done onscreen.

Spike Lee : Spike delivers one of his best films in years! The man who gave us the dazzling Do the right thing many years ago dominates once again with his fantastic direction on this film. Spike has a certain style that can’t be duplicated it’s a style where he will mix comedy and drama together and it is a formula that works out so well that only he can do and make work. Here he has some funny moments but for most of it pulls back on the laughs and shows a hard hitting look at racism and how deep it can run. He doesn’t shy away from the serious elements that come with it but takes it head on and shows it as authentic and realistic as possible. He shows the white power and black power and all the politics that come with it and ontop of balancing all that. He gets solid performances from his cast and writes and directs a marvellous film that will have you sit up and pay attention the style he has and the subject matter  jelled so well together. He doesn’t batter you over the head with politics but he also doesn’t shy away from it as well he chronicles this incredibly shocking true story as how it happened and brings it to life with fantastic execution done masterfully by Spike Lee. Overall Lee delivers one of the best films he’s done in years.
