Movie Review : Adrift

Adrift
This film provides one of Shailene Woodley’s strongest performances in years! This movie is a true based story on a tragedy that struck these two people while sailing to California and this film could of just of been another man vs nature film which we have seen before. From films like Life Of Pi, All is lost, the perfect storm and so on but this film takes that genre and really grabs you by its actors who are contributing greatly to the film. On top of a heartbreaking story that is incredibly well told and told in the most realistic depiction it could of how it all went down. The film kept me engaged by Woodley’s central performance and the unbelievable true story at the four front of it all.

First off, Shailene is electric in this film! Her work has been alright for the past few years but she hasn’t given a strong dominating performance in a long time and it’s nice to see her come back to it cause she really excels at it as The Descendants and The Fault in our stars showed us how she can give great dramatic performances. She shows up and chews up every bit of the scene with her fantastic layered performance that is the heart of the film and keeps you engaged to the end.

Secondly, the pacing and the execution of it was well handled. This film could of just been another like I said run of the mill man vs nature film and give over the top sappy moments but that film doesn’t go that route. It really shows a real and raw view of the chronicling of the event at hand without sugar coating the source material and keeping it as realistic as possible which I admire.

Overall the film is a truly solid film that provides an  outstanding performance from Shailene Woodley with a compelling story at the heart of it.

Rated PG - 13 : for injury images, peril, language, brief drug use, partial nudity and thematic elements

This film centres around the heartbreaking and unbelievable true story of two people who were very in love but when sailing the seas a storm brings tragedy and shows how strong the human spirit is

Shailene Woodley : Shailene gives a truly magnetic performance in this film! She’s given knockout dramatic work before like I said earlier and so this field isn’t new ground for her she just hasn’t explored it for some time and I’m so glad she came back to this cause she’s so great In dramatic roles and the results speak for themselves onscreen. She plays Tami a free spirited person who has to use every ounce of courage to survive the seas and the way Woodley conveys the sheer emotion cuts like a sharp edge and she is committed to every aspect of the screen to the end. She is the centre of the film and truly carries it greatly giving such a layered performance that grips and grabs you. Their are moments of true sadness and you can see her heart ache and tears flow from her face and that it seems that it comes from such a real place she’s so real onscreen. Then the next she can be so hopeful and optimistic she has this emotional flow and arc to her performance that just worked so well and she captured the person who she portrayed onscreen as well as she could. She has a truly fantastic range of emotions stripping herself raw onscreen and giving such a moving performance that is sure to amaze you. Shailene shines in this film giving one of her finest performances in recent years.

Baltasar Kormakur : This Director strips this film bare and shows the brutal and honest truth! This director I have not seen any previous work of his prior to viewing this film but after seeing what he dose here I definitely will keep an eye out for his stuff. His ability to be so real and honest in his telling of this story I admired he never shy’s away from the more disturbing parts but fully shows it taking it head on. His ability to go back and forth from before the disaster at sea was well balanced showing these people weeks before but also showing their current state. He could of easily just done the stuff before for the first half then the stuff after the wreck after but walks this fine line and dose both of them at once and I loved that aspect he Brought to it. Also his ability to shoot on the water and really get you in the centre of it and create a tense and heartbreaking atmosphere was well captured he dose the source material justice but executes it in a respectful way but also paces it very well to keep the audience intrigued also adding the great performances from the cast. He just really captures the sheer hopelessness and heartbreaking truth to the event that happened so well onscreen you admire his style he brings to it and the  great performance from Woodley he captures as well all and all very good direction here.
