Movie Review : American Animals

American Animals
This film is a fantastic heist film that is an incredibly shocking true story! This film works for me on so many levels and I’ll break it down and explain why. To start off this film isn’t your typical crime drama film this movie breaks the mold and injects the real people into the film talking how they remember it going down then it would cut back to the film and I loved that aspect of it. It brought an interesting view on the film for some people it could bug them for how they cut back constantly to the real people who are being portrayed onscreen and then back again to the film but for me I enjoyed it. By doing that it has this really genuine and authentic feel to the picture and the way they executed that within the film by doing that was genius direction and editing.

Secondly, this film also has a terrific cast all of which give great performances across the board. The standout performance being Evan Peters who really steals each scene he’s in and brings his acting to a whole other level. The film couldn’t of been more perfectly cast each actor contributed something great to the film their was never a weak performance the actors chosen to play these guys portrayed them as accurate as they could and the hard work payed off greatly.

On top of the great casting and the style of the picture the film’s fact based story was handled very well the director of the film Bart Layton gave a very real and authentic look to it and didn’t try to glamorize or make you sympathize with these guys he showed them in the light for who they were. He doesn’t sugar coat any of it he gives the film as real as a depiction onscreen as he could capture and I admire that about what he did here.

Overall, the film was incredibly engaging to watch with so many films about heist films that come out all the time this film’s ability to think out of the box with its execution and great cast on top of its source material makes it a compelling film that I recommend everyone to watch.

Rated R : for language throughout, some drug use and brief crude/sexual material

This film is a true story about how 4 guys attempt to steal some valuable books that are worth a lot of money

Evan Peters : Evan gives a performance that is one of his best he’s ever given onscreen! This man has given solid work time and time again on the hit show American Horror Story and again dominates the screen with this marvellous film. In the film he plays the wild card out of all of the characters and this guy has a lot of sides to him and Evan gives the most truthful execution of this character onscreen as he can and uses every ounce of emotion and commitment he could to give a truly great performance. He shows great strength at the try comedy but also at the more dramatic heavy moments too which he delivers spectacularly with amazing believability. He is the one who really runs with the idea of the heist and Evans captures it so greatly onscreen really becoming the character and taking this guy head on. He has such a depth to the performance that just crackles in greatness. He can make you laugh at moments then he can be sweating nervous and scared and totally serious and give the perfect amount of those two and explode those emotions onscreen with such fantastic delivery.  He just gets in the head of this person and really becomes the character and is committed to every aspect of this film. Every scene you can’t look away he just is so compelling to watch he brings this charm to his performance that makes it so much fun to watch while also giving something he’s never done before and going deep emotionally and exploring uncharted territory. He just is brilliant in this film giving another truly fantastic performance that steals the show and will have you mesmerized with his performance at hand Peters knocks it out of the park once again.

Bart Layton : This man directs this film in great fashion. This director looked at the story at went in a total new and bold style to deliver this story that worked perfectly. We have seen so many Heist Films so he did something many Crime and heist films don’t he did something different and I love that he brought this film into a style of half documentary and half feature film which I loved. His choice to have the real people talk about the event and then cut back to the film was genius thinking on his part on top of the way he also handled the pacing of the film too. This is a story that could of been mishandled in the wrong hands but he never bores you for a moment he keeps you interested in the story at hand and the people around it all by Getting solid work from the actors. He kept the film very realistic he shows it for how it happened and never makes the film to stylish that it over takes the narrative but has this perfect balance of the two that just resulted in a great film. He creates fantastic build up leading to the heist and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end something very few heist films have done in a very long time.  Overall he just captured this story and told it the way it was meant to be told. He gives a refreshing take on the Heist film genre while also staying truthful to its source material and keeping the audience entertained to the end overall truly fantastic direction on Bart's part.
