Movie Review : Blindspotting

Blindspotting
This film is freaking amazing! This film had me emotional, laughing, shocked and amazed. This film gives you what you want and so much more. This film has a element of comedy but also has really strong serious themes injected into it as well that has this perfect even balance that just worked perfectly.

First off, the cast is absolutely perfect everyone involved felt like everyday people for the choice to cast lesser known stars was a great choice because it made the film even more authentic and real in its depiction onscreen. Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal give exceptional performances in the film which they both also share amazing chemistry onscreen that you become instantly invested into. This works on all the levels it sets out to.

Secondly, This film has great built up and execution because it’s not a complicated plot it’s quite simple a man who’s on probation and has three days until he’s free and the way the film slowly builds up and then totally erupts by the end was amazing. It also was able to talk about really serious topics that we face today and it deals with it in a way that is very realistic in its execution and very raw. This film had me wanting to see it again once it finished it’s that good.

Overall, this film is a well acted, well directed and all around amazing film that everyone should see and that shouldn’t get overlooked hands down one of the years best!

Rated R : for language throughout, some brutal violence, sexual references and drug use

The film centres on a man who’s out on probation and has three days left until he’s free can he stay out of trouble?

Daveed Diggs : Diggs is extraordinary in this film! This man a lot of people know from the hit musical Hamilton but I am unfamiliar with his work after seeing him in this I will for sure check his other stuff out because he’s a damn good actor. He is a man who’s just not looking for trouble and trying to be good in a really rough world. The way Diggs portrays this character onscreen is heartbreaking because when you see him onscreen you can feel the pressure and weight on this guys shoulders and just wanting to get by and on top of also having a wild card friend it isn’t that easy for him. His emotional range is freaking brilliant. He was able to make me have belly laughs with his great Comedic timing but also knew how to dish out the dramatic aspects in explosive emotion that really impressed me. He just was this character I truly believed every word he uttered he was so genuine in his delivery and so grounded you can’t take your eyes off of him he just is that good. He has terrific range of emotions in such a layered performance that just blew me away. He has a scene in this film near the end where his friend and him get in an argument and he has this rant and it’s so full of anger and frustration but it’s the way he showcased and delivered his dialogue that you are in awe of what he’s doing onscreen a truly magnetic performance that is award worthy overall a truly incredible performance by Diggs.

Rafael Casal : Rafael gives a explosive Supporting performance in this film! This mans work I am also unfamiliar with but after seeing what he did here I’ll watch whatever comes next for this actor because he is amazing here. He plays the best friend of the main character and puts on this persona of being tough and very edgy and you never know when something will set him off. The way he plays this person onscreen was amazing due to the fact he doesn’t play it one note. What I mean is he could of easily of been this over the top crazy character which he wasn’t did he have explosive moments for sure but he also has smaller moments where he really shines with tear jerking emotional punch moments and I love that. He really got in the skin of this character and you only see the character not the actor he fully disappears and takes this role head on. At one minute he can be laughing and joking then the next he’s beating the crap out of someone so his ability to just have so many layers and such a wide range of emotion was striking. Just the way he spoke he was fully their. He had me laughing, emotional and shocked he brings it all and holds nothing back. He also gets you to really care about his character and invest in him even if he doesn’t do the right thing he brings this likeable quality to the character that you can’t ignore. He brings the emotional value to the character he just captured the character perfectly in his depiction of him it’s a truly fantastic supporting performance that you can’t take your eyes off of.

Carols Lopez Estrada : Carols gives a damn well directed picture! This is the only film I’ve seen of his and it won’t be the last time I watch one of his films either. Due to the reason this man knows how to make a damn good film. First off his ability to cast a relatively unknown cast I loved because due to the subject matter and plot it made it feel even more grounded and real. On top of tackling serious topics with bits of comedy was a genius mixture of tones that was perfect. He got tremendous work out of his entire cast and has this really compelling style of filmmaking that you can’t look away from. He just brings this film to life in amazing fashion giving it such a realistic and real look to it. He doesn’t over complicate things he keeps it simple and executes a tale that has undertones of comedy and really serious topics and balances them out greatly giving you an all around enjoyable film that you will want to see again and again. Overall a terrifically well directed picture.
