Movie Review : Ocean's 8
Ocean's 8
This film is a entertaining crime caper! Oceans 8 I’ll admit my expectations weren’t exactly that high for as I have seen so many heist films and also all of the Oceans films so I was worried this film was just going to retread the same water that those films have done prior. It follows the same beats of similar films of this kind for sure but it has great fun with the material that’s it’s impossible not to have fun.
This film first off has a strong cast from Cate Blanchett to Rihanna and Sarah Paulson the film carries huge stars in this film who all share fantastic chemistry onscreen especially Sandra and Cate who are the Brad and George of the film basically and the banter back and forth was fun to watch. The thing though is since the film is so keen on the heist that I felt I didn’t get enough time to get invested in most of the characters onscreen as well as I would of liked to have seen more scenes with the crew interacting as when they did it really was fun to watch the film just lacked backstory within some of the characters and could of injected more scenes with the crew finding their footing in the heist which I would of loved to have seen more of.
Secondly, the performances are very strong here the cast all give great work but the standouts are Cate and Anne as those two are the ones that steal the screen when their on and are the two characters who I thought was the most fleshed our and found intriguing as well as their great work given in the film. The performances are stylish and quick witted but it’s Anne and Cate that come really shine through in the film.
Lastly, I felt that the film was just pure fun it delivers on the heist aspect that I expected as well as giving a strong cast with great onscreen chemistry. While providing a great spin on such a overused plot device and really bringing a new take on it that leaves you entertained and smiling. Oceans 8 is not amazing but it’s definitely fun and sometimes that’s all you need is good old fashioned fun.
Rated PG - 13 : for language drug use and some suggestive material
This film revolves around a woman who recently is released from prison and assembles a crew to steal one of the most wealthy necklaces in the world at one of the biggest events the met gala
Cate Blanchett : Blanchett is fiery fun in this film! Cate is one of my favourite actresses period as she always brings her A game never giving less then her best. In this film she plays a criminal but is so much more then it appears. What Cate dose so well in the film is she is able to keep this mysterious look to her character where she engages you and gets your interest but will not revel to much about her personality but leaves you interested and I love that. She has this smooth stylish feel to her performance that is so fantastic she’s makes it look so easy. She really has fun with her role in the film bringing great humour and dramatic moments to the film and always knowing when to switch to which so she can deliver her comedy at the right time giving great timing but also knowing when to give that dramatic push and delivering the lines with greatness all at once. She’s a complete badass in this film that is one of the best parts of the film she is witty, dramatic and down right enjoyable to watch onscreen. Giving a truly fun and entertaining performance that shouldn’t be overlooked. Cate makes the character leap off the page and brings such life to it with her fantastic acting chops overall Blanchett delivers on all fronts.
Anne Hathaway : Anne steals the show in This film. I had heard she was good in it but wow is she ever. Anne plays this overly self confident full of herself celebrity that she just paints perfectly onscreen and brings this energy to the role that is enjoyable to watch but you dislike her character for who she is. I give Anne such props for her work here because she isn’t playing this typical over privileged character but she takes it and runs with it giving such life to it with great humour a surprising character arc that I didn’t expect giving great shifts in emotion that left me in awe. She must of taken notes when she did the Devil Wears Prada from Meryl cause she evokes the same characteristics in such a similar light that is just captivating to watch but near the end she throws you for a loop you didn’t expect. She gives such a strong performance here that is hilarious and downright fun to watch she really takes the character head on and you believe her every word and then can switch keeping it believable and entertaining all the way through. Overall Anne provides a scene stealing performance in this film that deserves to be applauded.
Gary Ross : Gary Gary Gary. This man knows how to give solid direction to his actors and give great films to the public. This is the man who crafted the best Hunger Games film who gave us Big with Tom Hanks and once again delivers another fun film once again right here. In this film Gary focuses on the plot but the characters mostly giving the effect that he wants you invested in these people so when they succeeded that you care and it impacts you. And he really did his best to achieve that. At the same time he also created this stylish fun caper with a strong cast and not letting the film take itself to seriously. Since this type of plot has been used countless times Gary was able to execute it with the likeable characters and fantastic humour that lands. He made sure it delivered on the heist and on the fun but he also leaves you shocked with a twist you don’t expect and I love that he just wants to give the audience a fun time and he dose so strongly here giving his spin on this genre with a solid story and great execution by a great director. He knew when to let the comedic bits roll but also when to slow down and show the serious elements but never let one overshadow the other giving it an even keel and leave the audience satisfied. He had little winks to the previous Oceans films without it feeling in your face obvious which I liked. Overall Gary provided solid direction to a film that could of easily of fallen short but delivers on the goods giving a fun time that is to be had thanks to Ross’s work behind the camera.
