Movie Review : Hereditary
Hereditary
This film is unlike anything I have seen in years! This is one of the most mind boggling and astonishing piece of cinema I’ve ever seen. This is a film that knocked the wind out of me after viewing it. It a film that will have you thinking and having deep discussions long after it’s over. Their is so much to unpack from this film which I’ll get to because this film is not your average Horror film I would even go as far as saying this is one of the most original, thought provoking films since the Exorcist. I know that’s a bold statement but it truly is it has this story that you think is going to be simple at first glance but when the film progresses it reveals more and more about this family and the subject matter which you do not expect it to go in.
First Off, We got to talk about Toni Collette’s performance in this film she is absolutely mesmerizing in this film in every moment she chews up the scenery and explodes in such colours of emotion. I haven’t seen such a strong female performance in a horror movie since Silence Of The Lambs and the Exorcist. Her work here isn’t just great but so good that I definitely see award buzz surround this performance that she gives because it is truly something special.
Secondly, This is not your average Horror film and it’s not what you expect at all. The film is not a scare fest creepy horror film it’s a slow build until things get to a pressure point and explodes and that’s what made the scares effective and what I really liked about it. It’s not going for the cheap scares it is psychological and disturbing and it catches you off guard when you least expect it and it is effective. But at the same time you get more then what you paid for walking away with a film that not only shows its good cents of scares but so much more.
Lastly, this film is easily one of most eye opening films I’ve seen all year led by a strong performance by Toni Collette while providing a story that is compelling with its narrative and leaves you stunned but also entertained Hereditary is a modern day masterpiece.
When a Family goes through tragedy they must find ways to grieve but when things start to go weird around the house they never planned for what would happen
Rated R : for horror violence, disturbing images, language, drug use and brief graphic nudity
Toni Collette : Toni is a tour de force is this film! I’ve seen my fair share of her work over the years but nothing has been as stunning and scene stealing as her work she gives here. Toni is one hundred and ten percent committed to everything in this film and she dose it masterfully. She plays a mother who tries to keep it together after many events fall upon her that would break or make someone go into an emotional pain she tries to piece herself together but after so many times she starts to crack and the way Toni showcases it onscreen is brilliant. Their are so many highlights where she captivated me such as a dinner table conversation she is quiet and very reserved but when she starts talking and getting upset she just builds and builds until she is full out screaming and their is such pain in here eyes and the way she delivers her dialogue was so hard hitting you felt it she delivers it in a way that was so real and genuine you really believed her as that character and then she could go back to being calm and collected. She has such an incredible range in this film with so many layers of emotion it’s impossible not to be stunned from what she’s capturing onscreen with this role. She made me feel for her with the heartbreak she could scare me with her intensity she is so powerful in this film with her work here. This is an Oscar worthy performance by Toni that is destined to get her award attention she is truly a force to be reckoned with she is electric onscreen giving one of the best performances I’ve seen all year.
Ari Aster : Ari is a genius! This man has crafted a modern day masterpiece on his first time around that’s unheard of. He has no prior directional experience and this is his first film and he knocks it out of the park. His style of filmmaking is unlike anything I’ve seen and is so captivating to watch unfold onscreen. He wrote and crafted a terrifying plot that builds slowly and really keeps the narrative contained within small locations and really uses those to his advantage while getting a great cast all giving great work. As well as delivering the scares in an effective way that isn’t cheap but genuine on top of giving something different in a way that leaves the audience stunned in the best way. I love his ability to use the sound and characters as the main points and really capture a story of a grieving mixed with horror and just showcase something that has not been done before. He woves so many layers not just horror but so much more then that through his film to get people talking and discussing. It’s a greatly directed film with fantastic writing for his directional debut this is outstanding I cannot was to see what he dose next overall Genius direction and writing.
The Cinematography : The camerawork in the film is so well done. The film uses the angel of the birds eye view and overhead shots a lot and it really captures the scope and horror of the environment around the story and is able to showcase it through the lens Beautifully.
The Score : The music in this film is terrifyingly brilliant. The films Score is very quiet and has a lot of piano sounds in it and it plays throughout then cuts when it gets scary and I loved that. It has this simple but eerie sound to it that just creeps you out but at the same time crafts an incredible score that really fits the tone and the scenes greatly.
